Investigating the Perceived Influence of Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence Maturity on Organizational Performance: A Mixed Methods Study

    Get PDF
Over the past two decades organizations have made considerable investment in implementing data warehousing and business intelligence to improve business performance through facts-based decision-making. Although many of these organizations reap the rewards of their investments, others find that realizing the full value proposition is elusive. While the literature is rich with studies regarding data warehousing and business intelligence, much of the existing research focused on the initial experiences of adoption and implementation, and few yielded empirical data that reflected post-implementation conditions that lead to mature capabilities and improved business performance. Sited at the Defense Intelligence Agency where data warehousing and business intelligence capabilities have been in place for 10 years, this study investigated the perceived influences of data warehousing and business intelligence maturity on organizational performance through the perceptions of end users and senior leaders. This study employed mixed methods to examine the linkages between organizational support, information technology capabilities, practices, use, and organizational performance. Using survey responses from end users (N = 29 respondents), the researcher employed linear regressions, and mediation analyses to test hypotheses and assess correlations among maturity variables and their effect on organizational performance. Conversely, the qualitative phase included semi-structured interviews with six senior leaders to understand their perceptions of existing data warehousing and business intelligence capabilities. The quantitative results and qualitative findings indicated significant correlations between the perceptions of organizational support, information technology capabilities, and use in predicting organizational performance. The discoveries resulting from this research represent an original contribution to the body of knowledge by providing empirical data to aid in advancing the scholarship and practice of the data warehousing and business intelligence maturity phenomenon

Speaking of Existence: a Previously Unmentioned Meta-Ontological Dispute Between Quinean Ontologists

    Get PDF
In hopes of prompting a meta-ontological debate among eliminativist, Quinean ontologists, this paper shows that Trenton Merricks and Peter van Inwagen’s disagreement about the philosophy of language implies a meta-ontological disagreement. I first show that, according to van Inwagen’s philosophy of language, only artificial-language sentences assert positive existence propositions. I then use my analysis of van Inwagen’s philosophy of language to define the concept of apparent ontological commitment that he presents without a definition in his essay “Alston on ontological commitment.” I then present a previously unrecognized meta-ontological disagreement between Merricks and van Inwagen. I conclude with a discussion of the significance of this disagreement: multiple conceptions of being are equally legitimate interpretations of Quine’s meta-ontology, and so there is no settled, single Quinean meta-ontology

Fermipy: An open-source Python package for analysis of Fermi-LAT Data

Fermipy is an open-source python framework that facilitates analysis of data collected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). Fermipy is built on the Fermi Science Tools, the publicly available software suite provided by NASA for the LAT mission. Fermipy provides a high-level interface for analyzing LAT data in a simple and reproducible way. The current feature set includes methods for extracting spectral energy distributions and lightcurves, generating test statistic maps, finding new source candidates, and fitting source position and extension. Fermipy leverages functionality from other scientific python packages including NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib, and Astropy and is organized as a community-developed package following an open-source development model. We review the current functionality of Fermipy and plans for future development.Comment: Proc. 35th ICRC, Busan, South Korea, PoS(ICRC2017)82

Network Layer Mobility: An Architecture and Survey

    Get PDF
In this article we explore various network layer concepts that play a crucial role in the design of mobile networking systems. We show that mobility is essentially an address translation problem and is best resolved at the network layer. We describe services that must be supported at the network layer to carry out the task of address translation. Using these service primitives as building blocks, we describe a network-layer architecture which enables smooth integration of mobile end systems within the existing Internet. A summary of some of the key Mobile IP proposals is presented, and it is shown that each proposal can be viewed as a special case of the architecture outlined in this article

IP Links in multihop ad hoc wireless networks?

    Get PDF
International audienceA number of efforts currently aim at scalable and efficient mobile ad hoc routing, an essential piece concerning the integration of such networks in the Internet. However, there is another independent and important issue, namely, how can existing Internet networks and ad hoc networks coexist coherently within the same protocol architecture. A fundamental concept in the IP protocol suite is that of a link. The link concept has so far been key to the scalability of IP networking. This paper identifies and discusses issues regarding the formalisation of a similar concept in the multihop ad hoc networking context - one of the first steps that must be taken in the near future, in order to be able to accommodate ad hoc networks in the Internet
