Aerocrane: A hybrid LTA aircraft for aerial crane applications
The Aerocrane, a hybrid aircraft, combines rotor lift with buoyant lift to offer VTOL load capability greatly in excess of helicopter technology while eliminating the airship problem of ballast transfer. In addition, the Aerocrane concept sharply reduces the mooring problem of airships and provides 360 deg vectorable thrust to supply a relatively large force component for control of gust loads. Designed for use in short range, ultra heavy lift missions, the Aerocrane operates in a performance envelope unsuitable for either helicopters or airships. Basic design considerations and potential problem areas of the concept are addressed
Raman Scattering Signatures of Kitaev Spin Liquids in A IrO Iridates
We study theoretically the Raman scattering response in the
gapless quantum spin liquid phase of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model. The dominant
polarization-independent contribution reflects the density of
states of the emergent Majorana fermions in the ground-state flux-sector. The
integrability-breaking Heisenberg exchange generates a second contribution,
whose dominant part has the form of a quantum quench
corresponding to an abrupt insertion of four gauge fluxes. This results
in a weakly polarization dependent response with a sharp peak at the energy of
the flux excitation accompanied by broad features, which can be related to
Majorana fermions in the presence of the perturbed gauge field. We discuss the
experimental situation and explore more generally the influence of
integrability breaking for Kitaev spin liquid response functions.Comment: 9 pages including supp. ma

Strains for studying Spore killer elements in four Neurospora species
This note gives a comprehensive list of stocks useful for working with Spore killer elements, including reference strains for use as testers, genetically marked derivatives, and strains sensitive and resistant to killing by Sk-1K, Sk-2K, and . Geographical site of origin is indicted for the various killer alleles. Many of the strains are newly deposited in FGSC. Some are listed also under other categories. Updated versions of the list will appear in future FGSC Stock Lists (Part IV, Special Purpose Stocks)

Crime, new housing, and housing incivilities in a first-ring suburb: multilevel relationships across time
Journal ArticleConcepts deriving from criminology, housing policy, and environmental psychology are integrated to test two ways that housing conditions could relate to crime in a declining first-ring suburb of Salt Lake City. For existing housing, we use a model to test whether housing incivilities, such as litter and unkempt lawns, are associated with later crime. For new housing, we test whether a new subdivision on a former brownfield creates spillover reductions in nearby crime and incivilities. Police-reported crime rates were highest for residences near the brownfield and lowest for those farther away. After the subdivision was constructed, this linear decline disappeared, reflecting less crime adjacent to the new subdivision, but also more crime farther away. A multilevel analysis shows that incivilities, particularly litter and unkempt lawns on the block, predict unexpected increases in crime. Both brownfield redevelopment and reductions in incivilities may be important ways to improve declining suburban areas
