Generalized Uncertainty Principle, Modified Dispersion Relations and Early Universe Thermodynamics
In this paper, we study the effects of Generalized Uncertainty Principle(GUP)
and Modified Dispersion Relations(MDRs) on the thermodynamics of
ultra-relativistic particles in early universe. We show that limitations
imposed by GUP and particle horizon on the measurement processes, lead to

The impact of deep-sea fisheries and implementation of the UNGA Resolutions 61/105 and 64/72. Report of an international scientific workshop
The scientific workshop to review fisheries management, held in Lisbon in May 2011, brought together 22 scientists and fisheries experts from around the world to consider the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolutions on high seas bottom fisheries: what progress has been made and what the outstanding issues are. This report summarises the workshop conclusions, identifying examples of good practice and making recommendations in areas where it was agreed that the current management measures fall short of their target
Dietary supplementation of heat-treated Gracilaria and Ulva seaweeds enhanced acute hypoxia tolerance in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata)
Intensive aquaculture practices involve rearing fish at high densities. In these conditions, fish may be exposed to suboptimal dissolved O2 levels with an increased formation of reactive O2 species (ROS) in tissues. Seaweeds (SW) contain biologically active substances with efficient antioxidant capacities. This study evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation of heat-treated SW (5% Gracilaria vermiculophylla or 5% Ulva lactuca) on stress bioindicators in sea bream subjected to a hypoxic challenge. 168 fish (104.5 g average weight) were distributed in 24 tanks, in which eight tanks were fed one of three experimental diets for 34 days: (i) a control diet without SW supplementation, (ii) a control diet supplemented with Ulva, or (iii) a control diet with Gracilaria. Thereafter, fish from 12 tanks (n=4 tanks/dietary treatment) were subjected to 24 h hypoxia (1.3 mg O2 l-1) and subsequent recovery normoxia (8.6 mg O2 l-1). Hypoxic fish showed an increase in hematocrit values regardless of dietary treatment. Dietary modulation of the O2-carrying capacity was conspicuous during recovery, as fish fed SW supplemented diets displayed significantly higher haemoglobin concentration than fish fed the control diet. After the challenge, survival rates in both groups of fish fed SW were higher, which was consistent with a decrease in hepatic lipid peroxidation in these groups. Furthermore, the hepatic antioxidant enzyme activities were modulated differently by changes in environmental O2 condition, particularly in sea bream fed the Gracilaria diet. After being subjected to hypoxia, the gene expression of antioxidant enzymes and molecular chaperones in liver and heart were down regulated in sea bream fed SW diets. This study suggests that the antioxidant properties of heat-treated SW may have a protective role against oxidative stress. Vortex states in binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates
The vortex configurations in the Bose-Einstein condensate of the mixture of
two different spin states |F=1,m_f=-1> and |2,1> of ^{87}Rb atoms corresponding
to the recent experiments by Matthews et. al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 2498
(1999)) are considered in the framework of the Thomas-Fermi approximation as
functions of N_2/N_1, where N_1 is the number of atoms in the state |1,-1> and
N_2 - in the state |2,1>. It is shown that for nonrotating condensates the
configuration with the |1,-1> fluid forming the shell about the |2,1> fluid
(configuration "a") has lower energy than the opposite configuration
(configuration "b") for all values of N_2/N_1. When the |1,-1> fluid has net
angular momentum and forms an equatorial ring around the resting central
condensate |2,1>, the total energy of the system is higher than the ground
energy, but the configuration "a" has lower energy than the configuration "b"
for all N_2/N_1. On the other hand, when the |2> fluid has the net angular
momentum, for the lowest value of the angular momentum \hbar l (l=1) there is
the range of the ratio N_2/N_1 where the configuration "b" has lower energy
than the configuration "a". For higher values of the angular momentum the

Complement Split Product C5a Mediates the Lipopolysaccharide‐Induced Mobilization of Cfu‐S and Haemopoietic Progenitor Cells, But Not the Mobilization Induced By Proteolytic Enzymes
Abstract. Intravenous (i.v.) injection of mice with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and the proteolytic enzymes trypsin and proteinase, mobilizes pluripotent haemopoietic stem cells (CFU‐s) as well as granulocyte‐macrophage progenitor cells (GM‐CFU) and the early progenitors of the erythroid lineage (E‐BFU) from the haemopoietic tissues into the peripheral blood. We investigated the involvement of the complement (C) system in this process. It appeared that the early mobilization induced by LPS and other activators of the alternative complement pathway, such as Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) and zymosan, but not that induced by the proteolytic enzymes, was absent in C5‐deficient mice. the mobilization by C activators in these mice could be restored by injection of C5‐sufficient serum, suggesting a critical role for C5. The manner in which C5 was involved in the C activation‐mediated stem cell mobilization was studied using a serum transfer system. C5‐sufficient serum, activated in vitro by incubation with Lm and subsequently liberated from the bacteria, caused mobilization in both C5‐sufficient and C5‐deficient mice. C5‐deficient serum was not able to do so. the resistance of the mobilizing principle to heat treatment (56°C, 30 min) strongly suggests that it is identical with the C5 split product C5a, or an in vivo derivative of C5a. Coupled-mode theory for Bose-Einstein condensates
We apply the concepts of nonlinear guided-wave optics to a Bose-Einstein
condensate (BEC) trapped in an external potential. As an example, we consider a
parabolic double-well potential and derive coupled-mode equations for the
complex amplitudes of the BEC macroscopic collective modes. Our equations
describe different regimes of the condensate dynamics, including the nonlinear
Josephson effect for any separation between the wells. We demonstrate
macroscopic self-trapping for both repulsive and attractive interactions, and

As lideranças e a diferenciação curricular inclusiva: que caminhos para a escola do século XXI?
Com este artigo pretende-se analisar num primeiro momento, o conceito de diferenciação curricular
no plano conceptual e dentro de um quadro de análise que permita aprofundar e clarificar o seu
sentido no contexto da escola para todos e no enquadramento da massificação da escolarização,
fazendo referência à globalização a qual traz novos aspectos para o debate em torno da finalidade
da escola. Analisa-se num segundo momento, o papel da liderança democrática e participativa no
desempenho do binómio curricular (currículo nacional e projectos curriculares) na medida em que
a articulação entre níveis centrais e de escola para o desenvolvimento da diferenciação curricular
inclusiva se constitui como meta indispensável para algo assim. Considera-se nesta perspectiva a
liderança propulsora da diferenciação curricular inclusiva na dimensão da praxis curricular das
escolas e dos professores. Por último relaciona-se esta problemática com a perspectiva da teoria
crítica no quadro de escolas entendidas como boas escolas
Spatial representation of temporal information through spike timing dependent plasticity
We suggest a mechanism based on spike time dependent plasticity (STDP) of
synapses to store, retrieve and predict temporal sequences. The mechanism is
demonstrated in a model system of simplified integrate-and-fire type neurons
densely connected by STDP synapses. All synapses are modified according to the
so-called normal STDP rule observed in various real biological synapses. After
conditioning through repeated input of a limited number of of temporal
sequences the system is able to complete the temporal sequence upon receiving
the input of a fraction of them. This is an example of effective unsupervised
learning in an biologically realistic system. We investigate the dependence of
learning success on entrainment time, system size and presence of noise.
Possible applications include learning of motor sequences, recognition and
prediction of temporal sensory information in the visual as well as the

Energy Conditions in Modified Gravity with Non-minimal Coupling to Matter
In this paper we study a model of modified gravity with non-minimal coupling
between a general function of the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, , and matter
Lagrangian from the point of view of the energy conditions. Such model has been
introduced in Ref. [21] for description of early inflation and late-time cosmic
acceleration. We present the suitable energy conditions for the above mentioned
model and then, we use the estimated values of the Hubble, deceleration and
jerk parameters to apply the obtained energy conditions to the specific class
