    Get PDF
Sustainability has been worldwide discussed, and when it comes to sugarcane-ethanol production, there are many standards required from importing countries to its suppliers. Brazil is the second biggest producer of ethanol in the world, and it has a competitive advantage over other countries since it has a high established production and land for agricultural expansion. The aim of this research is to evaluate the situation of ethanol plants in Minas Gerais state concerning their compliance to sustainability criteria and to briefly present the current situation of ethanol plants in Brazil. This evaluation is based on Bonsucro certification. A multicase study, composed of four sugarcane-ethanol plants, was conducted. The results indicated that the studied plants were not prepared to receive Bonsucro certification. They justified it due to constant changes in legislation relating to sustainability, and the fact that these criteria are not required by their customers, however, was concluded that the companies did not take a proactive posture, seeking knowledge about standards related to the topic. Obtaining international certification did not look appealing by the time of the study, but attendance to national legislation is mandatory. In 2017, the number of certified plants has increased, showing that there has been progress

Analysis, Design and Implementation of Biodiesel Projects in Brazil

    Get PDF
During the oil crisis of the seventies, Brazil has developed a successful program for gasoline substitution by ethanol (Proálcool). Nowadays the biomass accounts for 27% of total national energy consumed in Brazil and the ethanol participates with 40% of the total national fuel consumption of Otto cycle vehicles. In 2004, the National Program for the Production and Use of Biodiesel (Biodiesel Program) was launched. One priority of the Biodiesel Program is the inclusion of family agriculture and smallholders into the production chain. The Federal University of Viçosa (UFV) has developed a software for the analysis of biodiesel projects with the participation of family agriculture. Results of production chain analysis and economic indicators calculated by the Biosoft system have allowed identifying the regular supply of oil at competitive prices as the key point to the efficiency of biodiesel production chains. The use of oil cake as feedstock is the leverage point of chain performance. The meal sale can lead to a vegetal oil price reduction, without compromising farmers´ income, since they can be able to set up their own oil extraction plants. Coordination is then the critical element and has the potential to improve the performance of both the biodiesel industry and the animal production chain.Agribusiness, Agricultural and Food Policy, Farm Management, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety, Industrial Organization,

Colombia is beginning in bioenergy and requires policies and infrastructure for the production of biofuels. In recent years, biofuels come forward supported by the adoption of law decrees that allow the introduction of biofuels, at first mixed with fossil fuels such as gasoline and diésel instance. This article “Topic Review” presents the beginning and development of biofuels in Colombia, as well as the current production situation, companies and organizations leading this project, in order to adopt a renewable and sustainable energy. In analyzing this issue on biofuels in Colombia a clear beginning to the independence of fossil fuels, with the premise of a sustainable energy matrix to ensure industry growth, social development and environmental protection is noted. On the other hand the trend is observed worldwide to adopting biofuels mainly oil-dependent countries, with South American countries like Brazil, Colombia and Argentina the champions in these proposals. Colombia in turn presented in this field of biofuels available land resources, labor, internal consumption and production policies; but with the existence of difficulties in social inequality, internal conflicts, monopolies and political barriers that could prevent private and foreign investment.

Investment Decision in Vegetable Oil Extraction Plants in North of Minas Gerais – Brazil: An Application of the Analytic Hierarchy Process in a Biodiesel Production Chain

    Get PDF
In line with the social objectives of the PNPB (Brazilian Program of Production and Use of Biodiesel) and its “Social Seal” Framework, PETROBRAS has set up a 57 million liter/year biodiesel plant in the semi arid region of North of Minas Gerais State, where the socioeconomics indicators are very unfavorable. Despite the potential to boost the agricultural and agroindustrial sector, the biodiesel plant is using mainly soybean oil from other regions. Funded by the Minas Gerais Government, the ongoing project aims to contribute to the development of oilseed supply chain in the North of Minas Gerais. To deal with these socioeconomic complex decisions, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used. Organization models were proposed for the following production chain: i) castor seed, ii) jatropha, iii) sunflower seed, iv) cotton seed, v) macaw palm and vi) soybean. For each chain, investment alternatives were analysed using the software BiodieselFAO. The organizational models and economic results will be discussed with the stakeholder in a workshop, when the alternatives will be selected. Partial results of the project demonstrate that the lack of trust between the stakeholders is the main challenge to the organization of the production chains. The AHP methodology has been proved to be adequate to accomplish the project objectives. Further researches on production chain modeling and building are, especially for the bioenergy sector, highly opportune

Contract Farming: Inclusion of Small Scale Farmers in the Brazilian Biodiesel Production Chain

    Get PDF
Contract farming is a key element for the Brazilian Biodiesel Program, which aim to promote social inclusion of small scale farmers. The relationship between the industry and the farmers is regulated by a certification called Social Fuel Seal. The seal allows to the biodiesel producers favorable financing schemes, tax exemptions and, especially, the right to participate in specific auctions to sell the biodiesel. By the other side, the basic requirements are: i) acquisition of a minimum percentage of raw material from small scale farmers, ii) enter into contract with the farmers, iii) ensure technical assistance and training to the farmers. The Brazilian biodiesel program, in only five year, has obtained positive results. Although the inclusion of 109 thousand small scale farmers represents a small percentage, having in mind the total number of small scale farmers in Brazil (4,5 million), it is a very expressive figure comparing with 40 thousand sugar cane producers involved in the 40 years old ethanol program. The main challenge of the program is to increase the number of small scale farmers supplying the biodiesel industry with oilseed, especially in the Northeast and North regions of Brazil. The creation of a captive market for small scale oilseed farmers occurs under the regulatory framework of the Social Fuel Seal, which demands a mediated agreement between farmers and the industry. The formalization of a contract can be an important factor helping to organize the oilseed production chain, as the coordination of the production chain, including also the by-products, is a key factor

The Brazilian presence in international commerce, despite the regional leadership in Latin America and the global importance of Brazil as an emerging economy, is quite limited, reaching only 1% of the world’s total trade. Nevertheless, the agribusiness sector is responsible for half of the country’s export and Brazil is the world leader in sugar, coffee, orange juice, tobacco, soybean and beef export. Export growth is considered to be a key factor for the economic development of the country and many governmental programs are being carried out. The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA), through its Cooperative Department (DENACOOP), has joined these efforts. The DENACOOP export consortia program is focused on building strategic alliance in agribusiness production chain. After successful experiences in implementing in grain and honey sector, an applied research project was set up focusing on a flower production chain in Northeast of Brazil, which has the potential to improve socio-economic indicators of a low income region. To carry out the project the Federal University of Viçosa research team has developed a design and implemen-tation procedure, which was based on structuring and translating the requirements of organizations and producers into contract’s clause. The consortium main clauses established that all the purchase and sale of agricultural inputs, the internal and external seedling market, roses, ornamental and vase flowers will be done together. The commercialization and the post-harvest activities will be done through the creation of a distribution center. Recently flower producers have signed the export consortium contract. The consortium is expected to improve the competitiveness of the flower production chain in the state of Ceará and increase the current minor importance of Brazil in the international flower trade
