Charmonium Production at Forward Rapidity in pp, p-Pb and Pb-Pb Collisions, with ALICE

This contribution focuses on latest ALICE results on charmonium forward production in proton-proton (pp), proton-lead (p-Pb) and lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions at the TeV scale. In p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions, measurements are presented in the form of the charmonium nuclear modification factor (the properly normalized ratio of its production cross section in heavy ion collisions to its pp counterpart) as a function of the charmonium rapidity and transverse momentum. These measurements are compared to available theoretical calculations. Possible interpretations of these results in terms of gluon saturation, initial and final state energy loss, color screening and recombination are also discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 11 figures, Conference Proceedings Large Hadron Collider Physics (LHCP) Conference, 201

In celebration of the 60th anniversary of UFRN, we have proposed an initiative by IEEE WiEUFRNat CIENTEC aiming to highlight the female contribution to the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) degrees at UFRN over the last 60 years. The highlights were made through an exhibition, composed of four parts: I) description of renowned female icons and their contributions to the STEM areas. II) History of female participation in STEM courses at UFRN, through graphs showing the percentage of female students in the courses since its creation. III) #euexisto campaign: display of testimonials videos from current students of STEM courses explaining why they chose the course. IV) Tribute to female Lecturers: display all female lecturersnames that have taught in STEM courses at UFRN. As a result, the group paida tribute to those brilliant women and highlighted their contribution to STEM;acknowledged the current students and teachers of the courses; and helped raising awareness about the need to encourage the participation of women in these courses and in order to build a more diverse environment. Our main goal was raise awareness that the degrees of STEM had consistently less women than man and thus, our feminist group had a very important role to play in increasing those numbers. From the informal feedback we received, we believe our goal was achieved

Sacrifice and Efficiency of the Income Tax Schedule

We investigate the efficiency of equal sacrifice tax schedules in an economywhich primitives are exactly those in Mirrlees (1971): a continuum of individualswith identical preferences defined over consumption and leisure who differ withrespect to their labor market productivity. Using a separable specification forpreferences we derive the minimum equal sacrifice allocation and recover thetax schedule that implements it. The separable specification allows us to usethe methodology developed by Werning (2007b) to check whether the scheduleis efficient, that is, whether there is no alternative tax schedule that raises morerevenue while delivering less utility to no one. We find that inefficiency does notarise for most parametrizations we use to approximate the US economy. For thefew cases for which inefficiency does arise, it does so only for very high levels ofincome and marginal tax rates.

    In-medium formation of quarkonium

We confront preliminary RHIC data on J/Psi production in nuclear interactions with expectations which follow in scenarios involving charm quark recombination in a region of color deconfinement. The focus is on transverse momentum and rapidity spectra of the J/Psi, which carry a memory of the spectra of the charm quarks. In such a scenario, one predicts that both spectra will be narrower than those expected without recombination. Preliminary results for the transverse momentum spectra point toward a preference for the recombination picture, while the rapidity spectra do not exhibit any narrowing within present large uncertainties. We present new calculations in the recombination model for the centrality behavior of these signals, which map out the necessary experimental precision required for a definitive test.Comment: Based on invited talk at Strangeness in Quark Matter 2006, UCLA, March 26-31, 2006. PGC-1α: a target for neurodegenerative disorders

With increased life expectancy comes a greater disease burden that accounts for a gigantic social and economic impact. Neurodegenerative disorders (NDDs) are among the diseases that tend to manifest with age, especially given their long asymptomatic phase during which the disease is already progressing and leading to neurologic alterations. So, their incidence has been rising and will continue to do so worldwide, accompanying the population growth and ageing tendency. In the meantime, the available treatments for most of them focus on symptomatic relief, with no disease-modifying options available. This lack of pharmacological alternatives is a consequence of poor established knowledge regarding the pathophysiological mechanisms of these disorders. However, several studies have reported that mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress play major roles in the pathogenesis of diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Huntington’s disease (HD), for example. This comes as no surprise given the high energy demands of the brain. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α) has emerged as a master co-regulator of mitochondrial function since its discovery more than 20 years ago, so its putative connection to NDDs and hypothetical therapeutic potential was considered and assessed from the start. In fact, several animal models lacking PGC-1α have since then shown behavioural abnormalities and neurodegeneration, which might prove this connection. Thus, selectively targeting PGC-1α (in order to avoid deleterious and unwanted effects in other tissues where it is also expressed) could be an appealing and fine-tuned way of mitigating mitochondrial dysfunction and related oxidative stress. However, targeting a transcriptional co-regulator comes with significant challenges but also with a vast number of opportunities, especially considering the recent scientific and technological breakthroughs. Thus, the prospect of using PGC-1α as a highly specific therapeutic target for the treatment of NDDs and other diseases cannot be ruled out and awaits further developments
