Climate trends and behaviour of drought indices based on precipitation and evapotranspiration in Portugal
Distinction between drought and aridity is crucial
to understand water scarcity processes. Drought indices
are used for drought identification and drought severity
characterisation. The Standardised Precipitation Index
(SPI) and the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) are the
most known drought indices. In this study, they are compared
with the modified PDSI for Mediterranean conditions
(MedPDSI) and the Standardised Precipitation Evapotranspiration
Index (SPEI). MedPDSI results from the soil water
balance of an olive crop, thus real evapotranspiration is
considered, while SPEI uses potential (climatic) evapotranspiration.
Similarly to the SPI, SPEI can be computed at
various time scales. Aiming at understanding possible impacts
of climate change, prior to compare the drought indices,
a trend analysis relative to precipitation and temperature
in 27 weather stations of Portugal was performed for the
period 1941 to 2006. A trend for temperature increase was
observed for some weather stations and trends for decreasing
precipitation in March and increasing in October were also
observed for some locations. Comparisons of the SPI and
SPEI at 9- and 12-month time scales, the PDSI and Med-
PDSI were performed for the same stations and period. SPI
and SPEI produce similar results for the same time scales
concerning drought occurrence and severity. PDSI and Med-
PDSI correlate well between them and the same happened
for SPI and SPEI. PDSI and MedPDSI identify more severe
droughts than SPI or SPEI and identify drought occurrence
earlier than these indices. This behaviour is likely to be related
with the fact that a water balance is performed with
PDSI and MedPDSI, which better approaches the supplydemand
balance

They are recommended for the Brazilian semi-arid region (BRS Caatingueiro, BRS Assum Preto, BR 5033 - Asa Branca, BR 5028 - São Francisco, Gurutuba and BRS 4103). Experimental silos were used, in a completely randomized design, with six treatments (varieties) and four replicaties. The evaluated parameters were: dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), ether extract (EE), total carbohydrates (CHO), non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC), pH, ammoniacal nitrogen as part of the total nitrogen (N-NH3/TN), organic acids, and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of the silages. The mean values found for silage were: DM= 29.6%; OM= 94.9%; CP= 8.2%; NDF= 49.9%; ADF= 27.5%; EE= 3.8%; CHO= 82.7%; NFC= 32.8%; pH= 3.8; N-NH3/TN= 2.9%/TN; lactic acid = 7.6%; acetic acid = 0.6%; butyric acid = 0.3%; and IVDMD = 57.9%. Varieties BR 5028 - São Francisco and Gurutuba stood out (P<0.05) from others in relation to dry matter. The BRS Caatingueiro showed higher (P<0.05) level of non-fiber carbohydrates in relation to the others. The silages from all the varieties were considered of excellent quality, with potential to be conserved as silage in the Brazilian semi-ari
INCIDÊNCIA DE ALTERAÇÕES DENTÁRIAS EM UM REBANHO BOVINO LEITEIRO
The oral cavity of 64 milk cows was examined. They were confined in a free-stall,
milked twice daily and fed with TMR- total mixed ration. A total of 16 Brown Swiss and 48 Holstein
Friesian cattle with medium age of 48,1 months (from 28 to 108 months of age) were examined.
The teeth of 38 cows (59,4%) were rasped and rinsed afterwards with 15 ml of gentian-violet at 1%.
It has been found that 26 cows (40,6%) displayed no detectable alterations. The most commonly
found alterations were premolar and molar oclusal surface wear, forming sharp edges in 37 animals
(57,8 %). The wear occurred in 28,1% of the cases on the left and right superior premolar teeth, in
4,7% of the cases on the right inferior premolars and 6,3 % on the left inferior premolars. A total of
20,3 % of the right superior molars, 18,8% of the left superior, 9,4% of the right inferior and 7,8% of
the left inferior molars showed sharp edges. Furthermore, it has been observed 4 (6,3%) cases of
gingivitis, 4 (6,3%) cases of fracture of the incisors, 3 (4,7%) cases of half-moon shaped occlusive
wear, 3 (4,7%) cases of labial wear of the incisors, 2 (3,2%) cases of deciduous teeth persistence,
1 (1,6%) case of oral mucosa ulceration, 1 (1,6%) case of excessive wear with pulpa exposure and
fracture and 1 (1,6%) case of dental hypoplasia. It can be concluded that oral cavity examination is
a valuable instrument to promote health and productivity in dairy herds.O presente experimento objetivou levantar a incidência de alterações dentárias em
bovinos leiteiros criados intensivamente.
Bragança e Miranda do Douro no Norte, Coimbra e Viseu no Centro, e Beja, Évora e Elvas no Sul. As
Quantum-noise-induced macroscopic revivals in second-harmonic generation
We investigate the behavior of the fundamental and second-harmonic fields in phase-matched traveling plane-wave second-harmonic generation, using the full-operator equations of motion. We find that, after a certain interaction length, both the macroscopic and quantum-statistical properties of the harmonic and fundamental fields are qualitatively different from those found in previous analyses. The mean fields do not vary in a monotonic way, but oscillate with the propagation length, leading to an unexpected periodic revival of the fundamental field, triggered by the quantum fluctuations always present in the mode. Accordingly, the amplitude noise of the fundamental, previously predicted to be perfectly squeezed for long interaction lengths, actually reaches a very small minimum for a definite length, then increases again
Gravitational anomaly and fundamental forces
I present an argument, based on the topology of the universe, why there are
three generations of fermions. The argument implies a preferred gauge group of
SU(5), but with SO(10) representations of the fermions. The breaking pattern
SU(5) to SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1) is preferred over the pattern SU(5) to SU(4)xU(1). On
the basis of the argument one expects an asymmetry in the early universe
microwave data, which might have been detected already.Comment: Contribution to the 2nd School and Workshop on Quantum Gravity and
