    Non-Collinear Ferromagnetic Luttinger Liquids

    The presence of electron-electron interactions in one dimension profoundly changes the properties of a system. The separation of charge and spin degrees of freedom is just one example. We consider what happens when a system consisting of a ferromagnetic region of non-collinearity, i.e. a domain wall, is coupled to interacting electrons in one-dimension (more specifically a Luttinger liquid). The ferromagnetism breaks spin charge separation and the presence of the domain wall introduces a spin dependent scatterer into the problem. The absence of spin charge separation and the effects of the electron correlations results in very different behaviour for the excitations in the system and for spin-transfer-torque effects in this model.Comment: 6 pages, submitted to Journal of Physics: Conference Series for JEMS 201

    Graphene kirigami as a platform for stretchable and tunable quantum dot arrays

    The quantum transport properties of a graphene kirigami similar to those studied in recent experiments are calculated in the regime of elastic, reversible deformations. Our results show that, at low electronic densities, the conductance profile of such structures replicates that of a system of coupled quantum dots, characterized by a sequence of minibands and stop-gaps. The conductance and I-V curves have different characteristics in the distinct stages of elastic deformation that characterize the elongation of these structures. Notably, the effective coupling between localized states is strongly reduced in the small elongation stage, whereas in the large elongation regime the development of strong, localized pseudomagnetic field barriers can reinforce the coupling and reestablish resonant tunneling across the kirigami. This provides an interesting example of interplay between geometry and pseudomagnetic field-induced confinement. The alternating miniband and stop-gaps in the transmission lead to I-V characteristics with negative differential conductance in well defined energy/doping ranges. These effects should be stable in a realistic scenario that includes edge roughness and Coulomb interactions, as these are expected to further promote localization of states at low energies in narrow segments of graphene nanostructures.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure

    Sinorhizobium Meliloti, A Bacterium Lacking The Autoinducer-2 (AI-2) Synthase, Responds To AI-2 Supplied By Other Bacteria

    Many bacterial species respond to the quorum-sensing signal autoinducer-2 (AI-2) by regulating different niche-specific genes. Here, we show that Sinorhizobium meliloti, a plant symbiont lacking the gene for the AI-2 synthase, while not capable of producing AI-2 can nonetheless respond to AI-2 produced by other species. We demonstrate that S. meliloti has a periplasmic binding protein that binds AI-2. The crystal structure of this protein (here named SmlsrB) with its ligand reveals that it binds (2R,4S)-2-methyl-2,3,3,4-tetrahydroxytetrahydrofuran (R-THMF), the identical AI-2 isomer recognized by LsrB of Salmonella typhimurium. The gene encoding SmlsrB is in an operon with orthologues of the lsr genes required for AI-2 internalization in enteric bacteria. Accordingly, S. meliloti internalizes exogenous AI-2, and mutants in this operon are defective in AI-2 internalization. S. meliloti does not gain a metabolic benefit from internalizing AI-2, suggesting that AI-2 functions as a signal in S. meliloti. Furthermore, S. meliloti can completely eliminate the AI-2 secreted by Erwinia carotovora, a plant pathogen shown to use AI-2 to regulate virulence. Our findings suggest that S. meliloti is capable of \u27eavesdropping\u27 on the AI-2 signalling of other species and interfering with AI-2-regulated behaviours such as virulence

    Dynamical Evolution of a Cylindrical Shell with Rotational Pressure

    We prepare a general framework for analyzing the dynamics of a cylindrical shell in the spacetime with cylindrical symmetry. Based on the framework, we investigate a particular model of a cylindrical shell-collapse with rotational pressure, accompanying the radiation of gravitational waves and massless particles. The model has been introduced previously but has been awaiting for proper analysis. Here the analysis is put forward: It is proved that, as far as the weak energy condition is satisfied outside the shell, the collapsing shell bounces back at some point irrespective of the initial conditions, and escapes from the singularity formation. The behavior after the bounce depends on the sign of the shell pressure in the z-direction. When the pressure is non-negative, the shell continues to expand without re-contraction. On the other hand, when the pressure is negative (i.e. it has a tension), the behavior after the bounce can be more complicated depending on the details of the model. However, even in this case, the shell never reaches the zero-radius configuration.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev.

    The discursive construction of low-risk to sexually transmitted diseases between women who are sexually active with women

    This paper uses discursive analytical method to explore dominant discourses concerning the sexual health of women who have sex with women. In-depth interviews were conducted with a cross-cultural sample of women from England and Brazil. Sex between women was discursively constructed as ‘safe’ and women who have sex with women were seen as being at low to negligible risk of contracting/transmitting sexually transmitted infections. Analysis identified two discourses underlying these constructions: a binaries discourse which focused on dichotomies of gender, sexuality and risk; and a sexual double-standard discourse, which focused on the positioning of sex between women as safe and the use of barrier methods of protection as indicative of not engaging or fully enjoying the sexual act

    Electrostatically confined Quantum Rings in bilayer Graphene

    We propose a new system where electron and hole states are electrostatically confined into a quantum ring in bilayer graphene. These structures can be created by tuning the gap of the graphene bilayer using nanostructured gates or by position-dependent doping. The energy levels have a magnetic field (B0B_{0}) dependence that is strikingly distinct from that of usual semiconductor quantum rings. In particular, the eigenvalues are not invariant under a B0→−B0B_0 \to -B_0 transformation and, for a fixed total angular momentum index mm, their field dependence is not parabolic, but displays two minima separated by a saddle point. The spectra also display several anti-crossings, which arise due to the overlap of gate-confined and magnetically-confined states.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, to appear in Nano Letter
