Vocalization, Tadpole, Color In Life, Sexual Dimorphism, And Reproductive Traits Of Pseudopaludicola Mineira Lobo, 1994 Are Described From Populations Of The Serra Do Cipó, Minas Gerais, Southeastern Brazil. The Advertisement Call Is Composed Mainly By Notes With Two Pulses And Is Distinguished From Other Congeneric Species By The Number Of Pulses By Note And Frequency Range. Males Called From The Low Vegetation On Swampy Soil At High Altitudinal Open Fields And Around Temporary Ponds. Eggs, In Lower Number Than In P. Falcipes (Hensel, 1867), Are Pigmented. The Main Differences Among The Larvae Of The Species Of Pseudopaludicola Miranda-Ribeiro, 1926 Are Related To Number Of Labial Teeth Row And The Shape Of The Marginal Papillae And The Jaw. Males Are Smaller Than Females And Present Well Developed Vocal Sac And Nuptial Pads On Thumbs.Vocalização, Girino, Coloração Em Vida, Dimorfismo Sexual E Aspectos Reprodutivos De Pseudopaludicola Mineira Lobo, 1994 São Descritos De Populações Da Serra Do Cipó, Minas Gerais, Sudeste Do Brasil. O Canto De Anúncio É Composto Geralmente Por Notas De Dois Pulsos E Distingue-Se De Outras Espécies Congenéricas Pelo Número De Pulsos Por Nota E Pela Faixa De Freqüência Ocupada. Machos Vocalizavam Entre A Vegetação Baixa, Sobre Solo Encharcado Em Campos Abertos De Altitude E Ao Redor De Poças Temporárias. Os Ovos, Em Número Menor Que De P. Falcipes (Hensel, 1867), São Pigmentados. As Principais Diferenças Entre As Larvas Das Espécies De Pseudopaludicola Miranda-Ribeiro, 1926 São A Fórmula Dentária Dos Girinos, O Número De Fileiras De Papilas Marginais E O Formato Da Mandíbula. Machos São Menores Que As Fêmeas E Apresentam Saco Vocal Desenvolvido E Calosidades Nupciais No Prepólex

Defense behavior and tail loss in the endemic lizard Eurolophosaurus nanuzae (Squamata, Tropiduridae) from southeastern Brazil

Defense behavior of the endemic tropidurid lizard Eurolophosaurus nanuzae was studied in an area of rocky outcrops at Serra do Cipó, Minas Gerais State, southeastern Brazil. Tail loss aspects of this species were also studied in lizards from three populations (Diamantina, Serra do Cipó, and Serro, Minas Gerais State, Brazil). Lizards relied primarily on crypsis to avoid detection by predators. Secondary defense strategies involved a complex set of behaviors. Mean maximum distance of flight was 1.68 ± 1.70 m. When captured, individuals attempted to flee, lifted the tail, produced distress calls, discharged the cloacal contents, waived their tails, and bit. Frequency of tail autotomy was 13.2% (n = 53) in Diamantina, 11.9% (n = 42) in Serra do Cipó, and 4.1% (n = 49) in Serro. Tail autotomy frequency did not differ among the three populations (X2 = 3.3, DF =2, p = 0.19). Tail autotomy did not vary between the years of the study (X2 = 1.32, p = 0.35) and did not differ between males and females among the studied populations

This species is characterized by having a very pointed snout, two supralabials and two infralabials, of which second ones are elongate and enormous, small eye visible under ocular, ocular very elongate, autotomy annulus poorly marked or absent, absence of dorsal, lateral and ventral sulci, and presence of vertical flat, unsegmented band-like structure with concave lateral edges on tip of tail. Hemipenis without spines or distinct ridges on proximal third, sulcus spermaticus only on proximal third. We make comparisons with other South American amphisbaenids, and provide a key to the amphisbaenids of the Guianan Region. The species is fossorial and inhabits Amazonian tropical rainforest forest near creeks. This is the second species known of the genus, which seems to be restricted to the Guiana Shield and immediate surroundings

Chromosome analysis in Pseudopaludicola (Anura, Leiuperidae), with description of sex chromosomes XX/XY in P-saltica

Taxonomic changes have frequently occurred in the anuran genus Pseudopaludicola as a consequence of high morphological similarity among its species. The present work reports karyotypic analysis of three Pseudopaludicola species sampled in their type locality and four Pseudopaludicola populations from distinct localities, aiming at contributing to the systematics of this genus. Chromosomes were stained with Giemsa or submitted to the silver staining (Ag-NOR) and C-banding techniques. The karyotype was 2n=22 in P. mineira, Pseudopaludicola sp. and two populations of P. saltica. The chromosome pair 8 was heteromorphic in P. saltica, characterizing a XX/XY sex-determination system with telocentric X and submetacentric Y. Highly similar karyotypes with 2n=18 chromosomes were observed in P. canga, P. aff. canga from Barreirinhas, State of Maranhao, Uberlandia, State of Minas Gerais and Icem, State São Paulo. The high similarity among the karyotypes 2n=18 suggested that the populations of P. aff. canga belong to the group 'pusilla', the same group of P. canga. The data demonstrated also that P. aff. canga from Barreirinhas (northeast region) is cytogenetically identical to P. canga with regarding the NOR site position in pair 3 and the presence of a heterochromatic block in the pair 2, whereas P. aff. canga from Uberlandia and Icem (southeast) had the NOR in the pair 9. Moreover, the cytogenetic data discriminated P. mineira and Pseudopaludicola sp. from the previously analyzed species with 22 chromosomes, and suggested that Pseudopaludicola sp. is an undescribed species. Sexual heteromorphic chromosomes are firstly reported in Pseudopaludicola and the data indicated the need of an extensive taxonomic review in this genus.Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP
