    Confronting The Difference: Ethnicity And Patterns Of Achievement In Initial Teacher Education For The Further Education And Skills Sector

    In Higher Education (HE), an ongoing and incompletely understood achievement gap in degree classification has been identified between white and Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) students. BME students have been found to achieve less well than their white counterparts, even when initial A Level grades are the same. This paper examines a related issue, which has received scant attention; ethnicity and differential achievement in Initial Teacher Education (ITE) for the Further Education (FE) and Skills Sector. At the University which provides the focus for this paper, BME students are well-represented overall, and specifically well-represented on ITE provision for the sector. The introduction of a teaching observation grading pilot during 2010-11 made possible a detailed analysis of an aspect of ITE trainee progression and achievement. This paper presents the findings of further analyses of grading for the overall University trainee cohort, where differential achievement by ethnicity has been revealed. Strategies designed to promote the achievement of all trainees will be discussed

    History, origins and importance of temporary ponds

    In Europe, temporary ponds are a naturally common and widespread habitat occurring, often in abundance, in all biogeographical regions from the boreal snow-melt pools of northern Scandinavia to the seasonally inundated coastal dune pools of southern Spain. Ecological studies in Europe and elsewhere also emphasise that temporary ponds are a biologically important habitat type, renowned both for their specialised assemblages and the considerable numbers of rare and endemic species they support. They are, however, a habitat currently under considerable threat. Most temporary ponds are inherently shallow and the majority are destroyed even by limited soil drainage for agriculture or urban development. The paper gives an overview of definitions of temporary ponds and examines their formation and abundance. The authors also summarise a visit to the Bialowieza Forest in Poland to investigate the occurrence of temporary ponds

    Although there is a growing awareness of the value of temporary ponds in Europe, there is still remarkably little information available to help guide their conservation and management. General principles which can be used to guide the management of temporary ponds as a whole have yet to be established. The aim of this article, therefore, is to give a broader overview of the main principles of temporary pond conservation, particularly by building on a number of general principles for managing ponds previously described by Biggs et al. (1994) and Williams et al. The authors emphasise the importance of surveys in order to get data on which to base management strategies. The main principles of temporary pond management are described, and examples of three case studies of ponds in England are given

    ‘It is like school sometimes’: friendship and sociality on university campuses and patterns of social inequality

    Whilst most social and educational research on friendship focuses on children at school, it remains a crucially important factor for students in higher education – and can play a key role in the maintenance, exacerbation or subversion of dominant forms of social inequalities. This paper explores the complexities of such dynamics in relation to friendship and social life at university, utilising data from an in-depth qualitative study of HE students at a UK campus university. Students stressed the importance of friendship for comfort and a sense of ‘belonging’. Nevertheless, students describe the continuation of cliques, hierarchies, and exclusions that are more commonly linked to sociality at school. Despite the conception that friendship is an individual experience, it is very much influenced by social positionings such as gender, class, age, and ethnicity – having significant repercussions for students in relation to happiness and wellbeing at university

    Experience of UK Latin Americans caring for a relative living with dementia: A qualitative study of family carers

    INTRODUCTION: Most studies of the Latin American immigrant experience and care for relatives living with dementia have been in the United States (US). In the United Kingdom (UK), unlike the US, most Latin Americans are first generation immigrants and are a rapidly increasing population. Therefore, we aimed to explore the UK experiences of Latin Americans caring for a relative with dementia. METHODS: We purposively recruited UK-based Latin American family carers of people with dementia ensuring maximum diversity. We conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews (in English or Spanish) with 11 family carers, stopping recruiting when we reached thematic saturation. We took an inductive thematic analytic approach. FINDINGS: Four main themes were identified: (1) Family comes first, particularly older people, leading to an obligation to care; (2) dementia as an illness that is accepted and talked about, which is regarded as positive with close networks but not wider society; (3) difficult behaviours are not the responsibility of the person with dementia, who is often conceptualised as a child; and (4) caring expectations lead to incompatibility with formal services, and a reluctance to leave people with dementia alone. CONCLUSIONS: Familial obligation is the driver for family carers and acceptance of the illness helped despite adversities. Openness to talk about dementia with close networks was distinctive and helpful, contrasting with wider society, where greater awareness of dementia is needed. Considering the person with dementia as a child did not seem to undermine personhood and enabled maintenance of compassion. The relative with dementia was a priority. There was a lack of culturally and linguistically appropriate services, thus restricting family carers' ability to fulfil other roles, such as parental

    Health technologies ‘In the wild’: experiences of engagement with computerised CBT

    The widespread deployment of technology by professional health services will provide a substantial opportunity for studies that consider usage in naturalistic settings. Our study has documented experiences of engaging with technologies intended to support recovery from common mental health problems, often used as a part of a multi-year recovery process. In analyzing this material, we identify issues of broad interest to effective health technology design, and reflect on the challenge of studying engagement with health technologies over lengthy time periods. We also consider the importance of designing technologies that are sensitive to the needs of users experiencing chronic health problems, and discuss how the term sensitivity might be defined in a technology design context

    Equity in Minnesota Farming and Farm to School Programs

    Capstone paper for the fulfillment of the Master of Public Affairs degree.Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) farmers are underrepresented in the farm to school (FTS) market and in all areas of farming in Minnesota. In partnership with the University of Minnesota Extension, a team of four graduate students from the University of Minnesota Humphrey School of Public Affairs conducted a research project on BIPOC farming in the FTS market in Minnesota. The project examined some of the reasons behind this underrepresentation, both historic and current, and brings recommendations forward from BIPOC farmers for possible improvements. Specifically, the group investigated why there are so few BIPOC farmers farming in Minnesota and around the U.S. and what can be done at the local, state, and federal level to improve representation in farming. A number of themes emerged in our research about barriers BIPOC farmers face, which contributes to why their presence in the field is scarce. Historical inequities in land use and distribution, the forced removal and pilfering of land from Indigenous people, and the systematic denial of land and money to BIPOC farmers have all led to current conditions that make entering or continuing to farm nearly impossible for BIPOC farmers. Requirements for things like refrigeration and transportation in larger markets are expensive and make entrance into these markets difficult for all small and mid-sized farmers. Coupled with historic inequities, entrance for BIPOC farmers is considerably more challenging. Because farming is hard work and the returns are marginal, younger people are not entering the industry, drying up the pipeline of future generations going into farming. Recommendations from BIPOC farmers on how to address barriers and increase participation in FTS and farming, in general, could not only improve racial equity in the sector, but also offer solutions to broader agricultural problems faced by farmers and policymakers alike
