Redesigning Pork by Type and Amount of Dietary Fat for Bet- ter Human Nutrition
An experiment to modify pork by supplementa- tion of dietary lipids yielded the following conclusions: 1) Supplementation of pig diets with high levels of lipids did improve feed conversion without affecting other growth performance characteristics. 2) Feeding of choice white grease increased the content of monounsaturated fatty acids in skeletal muscle and adipose tissues of pigs. 3) Feeding soybean oil, increased the content of polyunsatu- rated fatty acids in skeletal muscle and adipose tissues of pigs
Structure and Dynamics of Metalloproteins in Live Cells
X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has emerged as one of the premier tools for investigating the structure and dynamic properties of metals in cells and in metal containing biomolecules. Utilizing the high flux and broad energy range of X-rays supplied by synchrotron light sources, one can selectively excite core electronic transitions in each metal. Spectroscopic signals from these electronic transitions can be used to dissect the chemical architecture of metals in cells, in cellular components and in biomolecules at varying degrees of structural resolution. With the development of ever-brighter X-ray sources, X-ray methods have grown into applications that can be utilized to provide both a cellular image of relative distribution of metals throughout the cell as well as a high-resolution picture of the structure of the metal. As these techniques continue to grow in their capabilities and ease of use, so to does the demand for their application by chemists and biochemists interested in studying the structure and dynamics of metals in cells, in cellular organelles and in metalloproteins
Development of real-time PCR and hybridization methods for detection and identification of thermophilic Campylobacter spp. in pig faecal samples
Aims: To develop a real-time (rt) PCR for species differentiation of thermophilic Campylobacter and to develop a method for assessing co-colonization of pigs by Campylobacter spp.
Methods and results: The specificity of a developed 5’nuclease rt-PCR for species-specific identification of C. jejuni, C. coli, C. lari, C. upsaliensis and of a hipO gene nucleotide probe for detection of C. jejuni by colony-blot hybridization were determined by testing a total of 75 reference strains of Campylobacter spp. and related organisms. The rt-PCR method allowed species-specific detection of Campylobacter spp. in naturally infected pig faecal samples after an enrichment step, whereas the hybridization approach enhanced the specific isolation of C. jejuni (present in minority to C. coli) from pigs.
Conclusions: The rt-PCR was specific for Campylobacter jejuni, C. coli, C. lari, and C. upsaliensis and the colony-blot hybridization approach provided an effective tool for isolation of C. jejuni from pig faecal samples typically dominated by C. coli.
Significance and impact of study: Species differentiation between thermophilic Campylobacter is difficult by phenotypic methods and the developed rt-PCR provides an easy and fast method for such differentiation. Detection of C. jejuni by colony hybridization may increase the isolation rate of this species from pig feces
A super-analogue of Kontsevich's theorem on graph homology
In this paper we will prove a super-analogue of a well-known result by
Kontsevich which states that the homology of a certain complex which is
generated by isomorphism classes of oriented graphs can be calculated as the
Lie algebra homology of an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra of symplectic
vector fields.Comment: 15 page
Learning to mentalize: a mediational approach for caregivers and therapists
Mentalization-based therapies (MBTs) are rigorous, theoretically grounded, and evidence-based
interventions. However, dissemination of this psychodynamically informed intervention lags behind
that of more skills-based therapies because of a lack of concrete operationalization of its key
components. In this proof-of-concept paper, we describe how the learning (mediational)
components of an educational intervention, the Mediational Intervention for Sensitizing Caregivers
(MISC), can operationalize key components of MBTs in behaviorally anchored ways. We suggest
that the process of the recovery of mentalizing can be operationalized through five learning
components: focusing, affecting, expanding, rewarding, and regulating. In operationalizing the
process of rebuilding mentalizing using these observable, behaviorally anchored concepts focusing
on creating epistemic trust, we hope to increase the accessibility of MBTs to a wider audience
Crustal failure during binary inspiral
We present the first fully relativistic calculations of the crustal strain
induced in a neutron star by a binary companion at the late stages of inspiral,
employing realistic equations of state for the fluid core and the solid crust.
We show that while the deep crust is likely to fail only shortly before
coalescence, there is a large variation in elastic strain, with the outermost
layers failing relatively early on in the inspiral. We discuss the significance
of the results for both electromagnetic and gravitational-wave astronomy.Comment: 5 pages, 3 eps figure
Matrix models as solvable glass models
We present a family of solvable models of interacting particles in high
dimensionalities without quenched disorder. We show that the models have a
glassy regime with aging effects. The interaction is controlled by a parameter
. For we obtain matrix models and for `tensor' models. We
concentrate on the cases which we study analytically and numerically.Comment: 10 pages + 2 figures, Univ.Roma I, 1038/94, ROM2F/94/2
