    Erythropoietin administration partially prevents adipose tissue loss in experimental cancer cachexia models

    Cancer-associated cachexia is characterized, among other symptoms, by a dramatic loss of both muscle and fat. In addition, the cachectic syndrome is often associated with anemia. The object of the present investigation was to assess the effects of erythropoietin (EPO) treatment on experimental cancer cachexia models. The results clearly show that, in addition to the improvement of the hematocrit, EPO treatment promoted a partial preservation of adipose tissue while exerting negligible effects on muscle loss. Administration of EPO to tumor-bearing animals resulted in a significant increase of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity in adipose tissue, suggesting that the treatment favored triacylglycerol (TAG) accumulation in the adipose tissue. In vitro experiments using both adipose tissue slices and 3T3-L1 adipocytes suggests that EPO is able to increase the lipogenic rate through the activation of its specific receptor (EPOR). This metabolic pathway, in addition to TAG uptake by LPL, may contribute to the beneficial effects of EPO on fat preservation in cancer cachexia

    Nutritional Evaluation Of Children With Chronic Cholestatic Disease

    Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)To evaluate the nutritional status of children with persistent cholestasis and to compare the anthropometric indices between children with and without liver cirrhosis and children with and without jaundice. Methods Children with persistent cholestasis, i.e. increased direct bilirrubin or changes in the canalicular enzyme gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), were included. The anthropometric measures were weight (W), height or length (H), arm circumference (AC), triceps skinfold thickness (TST), arm muscle circumference (AMC), and body mass index (BMI). Results Ninety-one children with cholestasis, with current median age of 12 months, were evaluated. W/age (A) and H/A indices below -2 Z-scores were observed in 33% and 30.8% of patients, respectively. Concerning the W/H index and BMI, only 12% and 16% of patients, respectively, were below -2 Z-scores. Regarding AC, 43.8% of 89 evaluated patients had some depletion. Observing the TST, 64% of patients had depletion, and 71.1% of the 45 evaluated patients had some degree of depletion regarding the ACM index. Conclusion Evaluation using weight in patients with chronic liver diseases may overestimate the nutritional status due to visceromegaly, subclinical edema, or ascites. Indices that correlate weight and height, such as W/H and BMI, may also not show depletion because of the chronic condition in which there are depletion of both weight and height.     Data Acquisition System of the Virgo Gravitational Waves Interferometric Detector

    International audienceVirgo is an experiment aiming at the detection of gravitational waves emitted by astrophysical sources. Its detector, based on a 3km arms interferometer, is a complex setup which requires several digital control loops running up to 10kHz, an accurate and reliable central timing system and an efficient data acquisition, all of them being distributed over 3km. We overview here the main hardware and software components developed for the data acquisition system (DAQ) and its current architecture. Then, we briefly discuss its connections with interferometer's controls, especially through the automation of the interferometer's startup procedure. Then, we describe the tools used to monitor the DAQ and the performances we measured with them. Finally, are described also the tools developped for the online detector monitoring, mandatory complement of the DAQ for the commissioning of the Virgo detector

    International audienceThe largest interferometric detectors for gravitational waves, LIGO and Virgo, have reached (or are close to) the design sensitivity and have started taking science data. The operation of such detectors is reviewed and the expected sources and detection rates are discussed. LIGO and Virgo might make the first detection, but more advanced detectors will be needed to truly open the field of gravitational wave astronomy: the current ideas and plans for the upgrades of the existing interferometers are presented

    GRB 050915a & the Virgo detector

    GravitationalWaves (GWs) are expected to be emitted in association with Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). In this context, we are analyzing data collected by the Virgo interferometer during 2005 to develop a method aimed to search for coincidences between GW bursts and GRBs. Our analysis is currently focused on Virgo C7 run and the long GRB 050915a, observed by the Swift satellite. The goal of such analysis is either to identify significant events around the GRB trigger time or, in the absence of such events, to set a limit on the strength of the associated GW emission. This study is a prototype for evaluating Virgo capability in constraining the GW output associated with a typical long GRB. Here we give an overview of the procedure we are following in our analysis
