Examining the Association Between Cervical Cancer Screenings, Health Care Access, and Socio-Demographics Among Women of Urban/Rural Status in Kentucky

    Get PDF
Background: This study focuses on cervical cancer screening rates (e.g., Pap testing) among women of urban/rural status in Kentucky. Specifically, this study’s primary objective is to examine the association between cervical cancer screening rates and health care access among the women of interest. Secondarily, this study aims to identify which socio-demographic variables impact cervical cancer screening rates and health care access. The purpose of doing so is to better understand what disparities and barriers might be contributing to the suboptimal screening rates observed throughout Kentucky. Methods: An empirical analysis utilizing secondary data from the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) was conducted for this study. Data were collected from January 2020 to December 2020. 1,623 female respondents were of interest and kept for the analysis. Variables of interest all fell within three categories: (1) socio-demographics, (2) health care access, and (3) cervical cancer screenings. Descriptive statistics, chi-square testing, and a correlation matrix were conducted to determine if there were associations between the variables of interest. Results: This study suggests urban-rural disparities in socio-demographics, cervical cancer screenings, and some health care access variables. Rural women were the ones to experience these disparities instead of their urban counterparts. Chi-square testing suggested significant relationships between urban/rural status and four socio-demographic variables of interest at an alpha of ≤0.05. Additionally, the correlation matrix suggested several significant relationships between the variables of interest at an alpha of ≤0.05. Implications/Conclusion: This study suggests that there may be an association between cervical cancer screening rates and specific health care access and socio-demographic variables. Future efforts should focus on devising and improving policy and educational endeavors aimed at increasing cervical cancer and cervical cancer screening knowledge and access to screenings among the intended target populations throughout Kentucky

The Ottoman Empire in the first world war: A rational disaster

    Get PDF
The Ottoman Empire\u27s entry into the First World War in October 1914 represents a break in over a century of diplomacy in the Middle East. Previous study of late Ottoman politics has focused more upon the European states with imperial interests in the Middle East and has not adequately explained why the weak Ottoman state decided to enter the war. This study utilizes both British and German diplomatic documents, along with published secondary works, to reframe the Ottoman entry into the war in a way that highlights Ottoman agency and illuminates the internal and external constraints faced by Ottoman statesmen. The study concludes that the Ottoman Empire entered the war on terms dictated by Istanbul and did so only because Britain, France, and Russia pursued a policy of active hostility to Ottoman interests

A study of teacher perceptions of the relationship between leadership styles of principals in high and low performing West Virginia elementary schools

    Get PDF
This study sought to identify differences in the leadership styles of principals in high and low performing West Virginia elementary schools based on teacher perceptions from the Bolman and Deal Leadership Orientation (Other) instrument. The reading/language arts and mathematics index was used to classify high and low performing schools. Twenty-seven principals (13 in high performing schools; 14 in low performing schools) and 196 teachers (88 in high performing schools; 108 in low performing schools) responded to the surveys. Descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and t-tests were used to analyze data.;The major findings regarding principals\u27 frame utilization were: (1) principals in high performing schools are significantly more likely to use all four frames than principals in low performing schools; (2) female principals are significantly more likely to use the human resource frame than male principals; (3) rural principals are significantly more likely to use the political frame than urban principals; and (4) principals in small size schools are significantly more likely to use the human resource frame than principals in medium size schools. The multi-frame principals tended to be female with 0--5 years administrative experience in small, rural schools.;The major recommendation was that low performing principals with no, single, and paired frame leadership receive professional development to become multi-frame leaders, and thereby enhance the educational performance of their schools

A Content Analysis of Transportation Library Websites

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the content of transportation library websites. A content analysis will be conducted to see what kind of information and which services are available on these library websites. The study will investigate what services are available to the public, discuss which services might be reserved for employees and staff of the transportation libraries, and if the features made accessible depend on the type of transportation library. Many studies have been conducted on public and academic library websites. This study hopes to address the lack of information about special library websites by gathering more information on a specific type of library that serves a specific information need. The information gathered would hopefully aid transportation libraries and other special libraries in better serving their clientele by providing more information about what similar organizations are achieving

Distribution of alkaloids in woody plants

Alkaloids are nitrogen-containing compounds found in plants. Most are highly valued for their role in wide array of ailments such as anti-malarial, anti-cancerous, analgesics, and many more. In lights of tremendous interest in recent years on the chemistry and pharmacological properties of alkaloids, comprehensive data have been collected. Forest industries have recently started to develop sustainable ways to increase the value of its residues including the extraction and commercialization of high-valued plant natural compounds such as alkaloids. This review presents the distribution of alkaloids among woody plants (trees and shrubs)
