In-situ tuning of catalytic activity by thermoelectric effect for ethylene oxidation

    Get PDF
Thermoelectric material BiCuSeO used as a support and promoter for catalytic ethylene oxidation is reported here. The catalytic activity on the continuous and non-continuous catalyst Pt supported on BiCuSeO was observed to be promoted in-situ by a thermoelectric Seebeck voltage generated by the temperature gradient across the material. It is also shown this thermoelectric promotion of catalysis enabled the thermoelectric material BiCuSeO itself to be highly catalytic active for ethylene oxidation. A good linear relationship between the logarithm of the reaction rate and the thermoelectric Seebeck voltage was observed. This thermoelectric promotion of catalysis is attributed to the change of work function of the catalyst surface, accompanied by a charge transfer from the bulk to the surface due to the thermoelectric effect

Fourth order transport model on Yin-Yang grid by multi-moment constrained finite volume scheme

AbstractA fourth order transport model is proposed for global computation with the application of multi-moment constrained finite volume (MCV) scheme and Yin-Yang overset grid. Using multi-moment concept, local degrees of freedom (DOFs) are point-wisely defined within each mesh element to build a cubic spatial reconstruction. The updating formulations for local DOFs are derived by adopting multi moments as constraint conditions, including volume-integrated average (VIA), point value (PV) and first order derivative value (DV). Using Yin-Yang grid eliminates the polar singularities and results in a quasi-uniform mesh over the whole globe. Each component of Yin-Yang grid is a part of the LAT-LON grid, an orthogonal structured grid, where the MCV formulations designed for Cartesian grid can be applied straightforwardly to develop the high order numerical schemes. Proposed MCV model is checked by widely used benchmark tests. The numerical results show that the present model has fourth order accuracy and is competitive to most existing ones

Overexpression of the Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) TaPEPKR2 Gene Enhances Heat and Dehydration Tolerance in Both Wheat and Arabidopsis

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yield and quality are adversely affected by heat, drought, or the combination of these two stresses in many regions of the world. A phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase kinase-related kinase gene, TaPEPKR2, was identified from our previous heat stress-responsive transcriptome analysis of heat susceptible and tolerant wheat cultivars. Based on the wheat cultivar Chinese Spring genome sequence, TaPEPKR2 was mapped to chromosome 5B. Expression analysis revealed that TaPEPKR2 was induced by heat and polyethylene glycol treatment. To analyze the function of TaPEPKR2 in wheat, we transformed it into the wheat cultivar Liaochun10, and observed that the transgenic lines exhibited enhanced heat and dehydration stress tolerance. To examine whether TaPEPKR2 exhibits the same function in dicotyledonous plants, we transformed it into Arabidopsis, and found that its overexpression functionally enhanced tolerance to heat and dehydration stresses. Our results imply that TaPEPKR2 plays an important role in both heat and dehydration stress tolerance, and could be utilized as a candidate gene in transgenic breeding
