Fluctuation Analysis of Human Electroencephalogram
The scaling behaviors of the human electroencephalogram (EEG) time series are
studied using detrended fluctuation analysis. Two scaling regions are found in
nearly every channel for all subjects examined. The scatter plot of the scaling
exponents for all channels (up to 129) reveals the complicated structure of a
subject's brain activity. Moment analyses are performed to extract the gross
features of all the scaling exponents, and another universal scaling behavior
is identified. A one-parameter description is found to characterize the
fluctuation properties of the nonlinear behaviors of the brain dynamics.Comment: 4 pages in RevTeX + 6 figures in ep
Deconfinement phase transition in hybrid neutron stars from the Brueckner theory with three-body forces and a quark model with chiral mass scaling
We study the properties of strange quark matter in equilibrium with normal
nuclear matter. Instead of using the conventional bag model in quark sector, we
achieve the confinement by a density-dependent quark mass derived from
in-medium chiral condensates. In nuclear matter, we adopt the equation of state
from the Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone approach with three-body forces. It is found
that the mixed phase can occur, for a reasonable confinement parameter, near
the normal nuclear saturation density, and goes over into pure quark matter at
about 5 times the saturation. The onset of mixed and quark phases is compatible
with the observed class of low-mass neutron stars, but it hinders the
occurrence of kaon condensation
Automated Mixed Traffic Vehicle (AMTV) technology and safety study
Technology and safety related to the implementation of an Automated Mixed Traffic Vehicle (AMTV) system are discussed. System concepts and technology status were reviewed and areas where further development is needed are identified. Failure and hazard modes were also analyzed and methods for prevention were suggested. The results presented are intended as a guide for further efforts in AMTV system design and technology development for both near term and long term applications. The AMTV systems discussed include a low speed system, and a hybrid system consisting of low speed sections and high speed sections operating in a semi-guideway. The safety analysis identified hazards that may arise in a properly functioning AMTV system, as well as hardware failure modes. Safety related failure modes were emphasized. A risk assessment was performed in order to create a priority order and significant hazards and failure modes were summarized. Corrective measures were proposed for each hazard
Magnitude and Sign Correlations in Heartbeat Fluctuations
We propose an approach for analyzing signals with long-range correlations by
decomposing the signal increment series into magnitude and sign series and
analyzing their scaling properties. We show that signals with identical
long-range correlations can exhibit different time organization for the
magnitude and sign. We find that the magnitude series relates to the nonlinear
properties of the original time series, while the sign series relates to the
linear properties. We apply our approach to the heartbeat interval series and
find that the magnitude series is long-range correlated, while the sign series
is anticorrelated and that both magnitude and sign series may have clinical

Fully automated urban traffic system
The replacement of the driver with an automatic system which could perform the functions of guiding and routing a vehicle with a human's capability of responding to changing traffic demands was discussed. The problem was divided into four technological areas; guidance, routing, computing, and communications. It was determined that the latter three areas being developed independent of any need for fully automated urban traffic. A guidance system that would meet system requirements was not being developed but was technically feasible
Long-term power-law fluctuation in Internet traffic
Power-law fluctuation in observed Internet packet flow are discussed. The
data is obtained by a multi router traffic grapher (MRTG) system for 9 months.
The internet packet flow is analyzed using the detrended fluctuation analysis.
By extracting the average daily trend, the data shows clear power-law
fluctuations. The exponents of the fluctuation for the incoming and outgoing
flow are almost unity. Internet traffic can be understood as a daily periodic

Charge oscillation-induced light transmission through subwavelength slits and holes
We present a concrete picture of spoof surface plasmons (SSPs) combined with
cavity resonance to clarify the basic mechanism underlying extraordinary light
transmission through metal films with subwavelength slits or holes. This
picture may indicate a general mechanism of metallic nanostructure optics: When
light is incident on a non-planar conducting surface, the free electrons cannot
move homogeneously in response to the incident electric field, i.e., their
movement can be impeded at the rough parts, forming inhomogeneous charge
distributions. The oscillating charges/dipoles then emit photons (similar to
Thomson scattering of x rays by oscillating electrons), and the interference
between the photons may give rise to anomalous transmission, reflection or
