    Towards Long-endurance Flight: Design and Implementation of a Variable-pitch Gasoline-engine Quadrotor

    Majority of today's fixed-pitch, electric-power quadrotors have short flight endurance (<< 1 hour) which greatly limits their applications. This paper presents a design methodology for the construction of a long-endurance quadrotor using variable-pitch rotors and a gasoline-engine. The methodology consists of three aspects. Firstly, the rotor blades and gasoline engine are selected as a pair, so that sufficient lift can be comfortably provided by the engine. Secondly, drivetrain and airframe are designed. Major challenges include airframe vibration minimization and power transmission from one engine to four rotors while keeping alternate rotors contra-rotating. Lastly, a PD controller is tuned to facilitate preliminary flight tests. The methodology has been verified by the construction and successful flight of our gasoline quadrotor prototype, which is designed to have a flight time of 2 to 3 hours and a maximum take-off weight of 10 kg.Comment: 6 page

    Force-free higher derivative Einstein-Maxwell theory and multi-centered black holes

    We investigate which 4-derivative extensions of Einstein-Maxwell theory admit multi-extremal black hole solutions with gravitational force balanced by Coulomb force. We obtain a set of constraints on the 4-derivative couplings by exploring various probe limits in multi-black hole systems. It turns out that these constraints are tighter than those needed to protect the mass-charge ratio of extremal black holes from higher derivative corrections. In fact, they are so strong that the Majumdar-Papapetrou multi-black solutions are unmodified by the force-free combinations of the 4-derivative couplings. Explicit examples of such 4-derivative couplings are given in 4- and 5-spacetime dimensions.Comment: 30 page

    The SH2/SH3 Adaptor Protein Dock Interacts with the Ste20-like Kinase Misshapen in Controlling Growth Cone Motility

    AbstractRecent studies suggest that the SH2/SH3 adaptor Dock/Nck transduces tyrosine phosphorylation signals to the actin cytoskeleton in regulating growth cone motility. The signaling cascade linking the action of Dock/Nck to the reorganization of cytoskeleton is poorly understood. We now demonstrate that Dock interacts with the Ste20-like kinase Misshapen (Msn) in the Drosophila photoreceptor (R cell) growth cones. Loss of msn causes a failure of growth cones to stop at the target, a phenotype similar to loss of dock, whereas overexpression of msn induces pretarget growth cone termination. Physical and genetic interactions between Msn and Dock indicate a role for Msn in the Dock signaling pathway. We propose that Msn functions as a key controller of growth cone cytoskeleton in response to Dock-mediated signals

    Convergence of Time-Stepping Method For Initial and Boundary-Value Frictional Compliant Contact Problems

    Beginning with a proof of the existence of a discrete-time trajectory, this paper establishes the convergence of a time-stepping method for solving continuous-time, boundary-value problems for dynamic systems with frictional contacts characterized by local compliance in the normal and tangential directions. Our investigation complements the analysis of the initial-value rigid-body model with one frictional contact encountering inelastic impacts by Stewart [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 145 (1998), pp. 215–260] and the recent analysis by Anitescu [Optimization-Based Simulation for Nonsmooth Rigid Multibody Dynamics, Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, IL, 2004] using the framework of measure differential inclusions. In contrast to the measure-theoretic approach of these authors, we follow a differential variational approach and address a broader class of problems with multiple elastic or inelastic impacts. Applicable to both initial and affine boundary-value problems, our main convergence result pertains to the case where the compliance in the normal direction is decoupled from the compliance in the tangential directions and where the friction coefficients are sufficiently small

    Harmony in diversity:Can One Belt One Road initiative promote China’s OFDI?

    This paper investigates the effect of the One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative on China&rsquo;s outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) using a dataset of all host countries for the period of 2010&ndash;2015. The employed econometric technique combines a difference-in-differences estimator with matching techniques. The results show that China&rsquo;s OFDI in OBOR countries is about 40% higher than in non-OBOR countries. After the initiative, the OFDI from China increases by 46.2% in OBOR countries. However, after controlling for the heterogeneity across OBOR and non-OBOR countries using the matching approach, the significance of the increasing effect caused by the OBOR initiative disappears. We also find the OBOR initiative diminishes the resource-seeking motivation and improves the market-seeking motivation of China&rsquo;s OFDI. Our results cast doubts on the infrastructure-led and institution-based strategy of the OBOR initiative, but support the boosting effect of the OBOR initiative on institutional cooperation and cultural convergence. Thus, the OBOR initiative is a sustainable continuation and development of the long tradition of economic, institutional, and cultural convergence with the OBOR countries, rather than a temporary policy shock
