Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors are yet the best drugs currently available for the management of Alzheimer's disease. The recent phytochemical investigation has led to the isolation of a new depsidone 1 with moderate AChE activity (1 mu g). This work was focused on its electronic properties analysed using commercially available programs. Both the active depsidone molecule 1 and galanthamine showed to have higher HOMO energies than the inactive depsidones 2-4, isolated from the same lichen species. However, the amino depsidone derivative 7, whose structure was proposed using computational approaches, is expected to be more active AChE inhibitor than the depsidone 1, due to the improved HOMO energy value. In addition, the molecular docking study indicated that the compound 7 has ability to make the well-known interactions of potent AChE inhibitors with the enzyme active site. The data presented herein support the design of novel AChE inhibitors based on the depsidone scaffold

This work extends in vitro screening of antibacterial activity of avarol on four selected pathogenic bacteria associated with psoriasis (Bacillus cereus, Clostridium sporogenes, Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus). Avarol exhibited a moderate activity with minimum inhibitory and minimum bactericidal concentrations ranged from 0.78-1.56 and 3.12-18.75 Ī¼g/mL, respectively. It proved to be more effective against B. cereus in comparison to the both positive controls applied, gentamycin and ampicillin. According to the experimental data, this marine natural product may inspire development of new antibiotics with an enhanced therapeutic index, at first place those targeting B. cereus

During a four-year period, ampelographic experiments focusing on the berry cluster (average length of grape cluster, number of grape clusters per shoot, number of berries per grape cluster and length of peduncle), berry (length of berry and berry juice yield), length of pedicel and seed (length of berry seed) of Merlot cultivar (used as a relevant standard) and 11 clones (Nos. 022, 023, 025, 026, 027, 028, 029, 030, 031, 033 and 034) were performed in order to establish the differences among them. These experiments were actually conducted in the third phase of individual clonal selection of Merlot cultivar carried out in Serbia. The lengths of grape cluster and pedicel as well as berry must yields differed significantly among the examined clones. The cluster and principal component analyses classified 12 samples into three divergent clusters/groups, respectively. The clones belonging to the cluster II /the second group/ had significantly higher values of numbers of grape clusters per shoot and berries per grape cluster; lengths of peduncle and berry; berry must yield and length of pedicel, compared both to standard Merlot /the cluster I, the first group/ and the clones of the cluster III /the third group/. The phenological observations showed no significant differences in the beginnings and durations of phenological stages and vegetation period of the examined clones. The obtained results indicate the real need for further research work focused both on the agrobiological and technological properties of the grapes and wines aiming to better describe the selected clones.

The acetylcholinesterase inhibitory and/or antitumour activities of amino-, thio-and ester-derivatives of avarol selected were evaluated for the first time at in vitro conditions. Avarol-3',4'-dithioglycol (1) and avarol-4'-(3) mercaptopropionic acid (3) were shown to be the best inhibitors of the enzyme tested (0.50 mu g and IC50 0.05mM and 0.50 mg and IC50 0.12 mM, respectively), while 4'-tryptamine-avarone (9) and avarol-3'-(3) mercaptopropionic acid (2) exhibited the highest cytotoxicity against the human breast T-47D cancer cell line (IC50 0.66 mu g/mL and 1.25 mu g/mL, respectively). According to experimental data obtained, the sesquiterpenoid hydroquinone structure of bioactive avarol derivatives may inspire development of new pharmacologically useful substances to be used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and/or human breast tumour

Moss species of the family Brachytheciaceae, Kindbergia praelonga (Hedw.) Ochyra and Kindbergia stokesii (Turn.) Ochyra, were preliminarily analysed for their fatty acid composition with the aim of studying the chemical relationship of these two entities. Fatty acid methyl esters were examined by GC and GC MS in their methanol extracts. Thirteen fatty acids were identified. It is likely that the mosses are chemically distinguishable and should be treated as separate entities. However, additional chemical constituents of various moss samples, such as phenolic acids, their derivatives and flavonoids, must be also analyzed in order to support the re-examination of the relationship between these two species.Preliminarno je ispitivan sastav viŔih masnih kiselina dve mahovine iz familije Brachytheciaceae, Kindbergia praelonga (Hedw.) Ochyra i Kindbergia stokesii (Turn.)

    Get PDF
Covering the period 2009-2012, the quality of Merlot wines obtained from three new clone candidates (namely Nos. 022, 025 and 029, respectively; fourth phase of clonal selection) developed in the Republic of Serbia was examined. The following parameters were determined: Folin-Ciocalteu (FC) index, pH value, total acidity, volatile acids, aldehydes, esters, relative density and ash. In comparison with the standard Merlot wine (originating from mother vine), FC index (from 35.73 to 37.15) and tasting score (from 17.89 to 17.95) were higher for the wines of all three clone candidates tested. These findings are in good agreement with the observed trend for the viticultural parameters indicating better properties of the new Merlot clone candidates versus mother
