An Uncertainty-aware Hybrid Approach for Sea State Estimation Using Ship Motion Responses

    Get PDF
Situation awareness is essential for autonomous ships. One key aspect is to estimate the sea state in a real-time manner. Considering the ship as a large wave buoy, the sea state can be estimated from motion responses without extra sensors installed. This task is challenging since the relationship between the wave and the ship motion is hard to model. Existing methods include a wave buoyanalogy (WBA) method, which assumes linearity between wave and ship motion, and a machine learning (ML) approach. Since the data collected from a vessel in the real world is typically limited to a small range of sea states, the ML method might suffer from catastrophic failure when the encountered sea state is not in the training dataset. This paper proposes a hybrid approach that combined the two methods above. The ML method is compensated by the WBA method based on the uncertainty of estimation results and, thus, the catastrophic failure can be avoided. Real-world historical data from the Research Vessel (RV) Gunnerus are applied to validate the approach. Results show that the hybrid approach improves estimation accuracy.acceptedVersio

Wind Speed Multi-Mode Ensemble Forecasting for Wind Farms Based on Machine Learning

    Get PDF
[Introduction] With the extensive construction of wind farms, the combination of researches on different machine learning algorithms and meteorological forecasting modes has received widespread attention. [Method] This paper was based on the spatial distribution characteristics of wind energy resources in Hubei Province, and utilized representative stations in combination with experimental data analysis to conduct in-depth discussions on the results. [Result] The wind farms in operation and under construction in Hubei Province are all located in the "Three Zones and One Area", including the north-south wind zone from Jingmen to Jingzhou in the central part of Hubei Province, the east-west wind zone from Zaoyang to Yingshan in the north of Hubei Province, certain lake islands and zones along the lake, as well as some high mountainous areas in the southwest and southeast of Hubei Province. This research uses four different numerical forecasting products, namely CMA-WSP, CMA-GD, WHMM, and EC, to compare with the measured wind speeds and investigated the applicable range of these four numerical modes. [Conclusion] By analyzing the performance of five ensemble forecasting methods based on machine learning and the mean method, we identified suitable algorithm and forecasting model combinations, providing references for improving the accuracy of ensemble forecasting

Hippocampal Subregion and Gene Detection in Alzheimer’s Disease Based on Genetic Clustering Random Forest

The distinguishable subregions that compose the hippocampus are differently involved in functions associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Thus, the identification of hippocampal subregions and genes that classify AD and healthy control (HC) groups with high accuracy is meaningful. In this study, by jointly analyzing the multimodal data, we propose a novel method to construct fusion features and a classification method based on the random forest for identifying the important features. Specifically, we construct the fusion features using the gene sequence and subregions correlation to reduce the diversity in same group. Moreover, samples and features are selected randomly to construct a random forest, and genetic algorithm and clustering evolutionary are used to amplify the difference in initial decision trees and evolve the trees. The features in resulting decision trees that reach the peak classification are the important "subregion gene pairs". The findings verify that our method outperforms well in classification performance and generalization. Particularly, we identified some significant subregions and genes, such as hippocampus amygdala transition area (HATA), fimbria, parasubiculum and genes included RYR3 and PRKCE. These discoveries provide some new candidate genes for AD and demonstrate the contribution of hippocampal subregions and genes to AD

Excess Deaths of Gastrointestinal, Liver, and Pancreatic Diseases During the COVID-19 Pandemic in the United States

Objectives: To evaluate excess deaths of gastrointestinal, liver, and pancreatic diseases in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We retrieved weekly death counts from National Vital Statistics System and fitted them with a quasi-Poisson regression model. Cause-specific excess deaths were calculated by the difference between observed and expected deaths with adjustment for temporal trend and seasonality. Demographic disparities and temporal-spatial patterns were evaluated for different diseases. Results: From March 2020 to September 2022, the increased mortality (measured by excess risks) for Clostridium difficile colitis, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, and acute pancreatitis were 35.9%; 24.8%; and 20.6% higher than the expected. For alcoholic liver disease, fibrosis/cirrhosis, and hepatic failure, the excess risks were 1.4–2.8 times higher among younger inhabitants than older inhabitants. The excess deaths of selected diseases were persistently observed across multiple epidemic waves with fluctuating trends for gastrointestinal hemorrhage and fibrosis/cirrhosis and an increasing trend for C. difficile colitis. Conclusion: The persistently observed excess deaths of digestive diseases highlights the importance for healthcare authorities to develop sustainable strategies in response to the long-term circulating of SARS-CoV-2 in the community

Is Asthma Related to Choroidal Neovascularization?

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Age-related degeneration (AMD) and asthma are both diseases that are related to the activation of the complement system. The association between AMD and asthma has been debated in previous studies. The authors investigated the relationship between AMD and asthma systemically. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The epidemiological study showed that asthma was related to choroidal neovascularization (CNV) subtype (ORβ€Š=β€Š1.721, Pβ€Š=β€Š0.023). However, the meta-analysis showed there was no association between AMD and asthma. In an animal model, we found more fluoresce in leakage of CNV lesions by FA analysis and more angiogenesis by histological analysis in rats with asthma. Western blot demonstrated an elevated level of C3Ξ±-chain, C3Ξ±'-chain and VEGF. After compstatin was intravitreally injected, CNV leakage decreased according to FA analysis, with the level of C3 and VEGF protein decreasing at the same time. SIGNIFICANCE: This study first investigated the relationship between AMD and asthma systematically, and it was found that asthma could be a risk factor for the development of AMD. The study may provide a better understanding of the disease, which may advance the potential for screening asthma patients in clinical practice

ER Stress Negatively Modulates the Expression of the miR-199a/214 Cluster to Regulates Tumor Survival and Progression in Human Hepatocellular Cancer

Background: Recent studies have emphasized causative links between microRNAs (miRNAs) deregulation and tumor development. In hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), more and more miRNAs were identified as diagnostic and prognostic cancer biomarkers, as well as additional therapeutic tools. This study aimed to investigate the functional significance and regulatory mechanism of the miR-199a2/214 cluster in HCC progression. Methods and Findings: In this study, we showed that miR-214, as well as miR-199a-3p and miR-199a-5p levels were significantly reduced in the majority of examined 23 HCC tissues and HepG2 and SMMC-7721 cell lines, compared with their nontumor counterparts. To further explore the role of miR-214 in hepatocarcinogenesis, we disclosed that the ER stressinduced pro-survival factor XBP-1 is a target of miR-214 by using western blot assay and luciferase reporter assay. Reexpression of miR-214 in HCC cell lines (HepG2 and SMMC-7721) inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis. Furthermore, ectopic expression of miR-214 dramatically suppressed the ability of HCC cells to form colonies in vitro and to develop tumors in a subcutaneous xenotransplantation model of the BALB/c athymic nude mice. Moreover, reintroduction of XBP-1s attenuated miR-214-mediated suppression of HCC cells proliferation, colony and tumor formation. To further understand the mechanism of the miR-199a/214 cluster down-expression in HCC, we found that thapsigargin (TG) and tunicamycin (TM) or hypoxia-induced unfolded protein response (UPR) suppresses the expression of the miR-199a/21
