    Study on predatory function of Cheyletuseruditus(Schrank)on Acarussiro(Linnaeus)

    Cheyletuseruditus (Schrank) is widely existed in grain depots and warehouse,which is an ideal natural enemy resources with control potentialagainst pests and mites,especially for eggs and young larvae.In order to evaluate its biological control potential to Acarussiro (Linnaeus),functional response analyses were conducted of three C.eruditusstages,protonymph,deutonymph and female adult to four Acarussiro stages,eggs,larve,nymphs and adult.The results showed that the predation function of C.eruditusprotonymphs,deutonymphs and female adult all belonged to the Hollingâ…¡type to four stages of Acarussiro.The predation ability of female adult was the highest,and its attacking efficiency on different stages of Acarussiro was 0.913 (egg),1.030 (larva),1.017 (deutonymph),0.989 (adult)respectively.The female adult of C.eruditus preferred to the larvae,with the maximum predatory efficiency 42.436 larvae per day.In terms of the predatory capacity of C.eruditus to Acarussiro,female adult showed the highest potential in preying different stages of Acarussiro except for the eggs,then was deutonymph. C.eruditus was the mostpotential native Phytoseiid species that might be used in Acarussiro control.This study laid a foundation parameter for the control of stored grain pest and mites by C.eruditus,and provided a reference for the further application of C.eruditus to control pest insects and mites

    A controllable superconducting electromechanical oscillator with a suspended membrane

    We fabricate a microscale electromechanical system, in which a suspended superconducting membrane, treated as a mechanical oscillator, capacitively couples to a superconducting microwave resonator. As the microwave driving power increases, nonmonotonic dependence of the resonance frequency of the mechanical oscillator on the driving power has been observed. We also demonstrate the optical switching of the resonance frequency of the mechanical oscillator. Theoretical models for qualitative understanding of our experimental observations are presented. Our experiment may pave the way for the application of a mechanical oscillator with its resonance frequency controlled by the electromagnetic and/or optical fields, such as a microwave-optical interface and a controllable element in a superqubit-mechanical oscillator hybrid system.Comment: 8 pages,4 figure

    Enteric bacterial loads are associated with interleukin-6 levels in systemic inflammatory response syndrome patients

    AbstractBackgroundLoss of intestinal integrity is a critical contributor to excessive inflammation following severe trauma or major surgery. In the case of enterocyte damage, intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (IFABP) is released into the extracellular space. Excessive production of interleukin (IL)-6 can induce systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). However, the correlation of IL-6 with gut barrier failure and bacterial translocation in critically ill patients has not been well characterized.PurposesTo define the relationship between enteric bacterial loads and IL-6 levels in patients with SIRS.MethodsVariables related to prognosis and treatment were measured in 85 patients with SIRS upon admission to the emergency room. IL-6 and IFABP were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Enteric bacterial loads in blood were measured through quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction with primers specific for enteric bacteria.ResultsMultivariate analysis revealed a positive correlation between enteric bacterial loads and IL-6 levels in blood. Elevated IFABP concentration was associated with low blood pressure, high respiration rate, hyperglycemia, and high Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score. Elevated C-reactive protein concentrations were associated with higher soluble CD14 levels in blood.ConclusionEnterocyte damage is associated with hypotension and tachypnia in patients with SIRS. Gut function failure may permit enteric bacteria to enter the blood, thereby elevating IL-6 levels and inducing a systemic inflammatory response, resulting in multiple organ failure

    Catalyst Performance Studies on the Guerbet Reaction in a Continuous Flow Reactor Using Mono- and Bi-Metallic Cu-Ni Porous Metal Oxides

    Higher alcohols like 1-butanol are considered important biofuels with superior properties compared to the more readily available bio-ethanol. An attractive route to prepare 1-butanol from ethanol is the Guerbet reaction. We here report the use of hydrotalcite-derived mono- (Cu-PMO or Ni-PMO) and bi-metallic (CuNi-PMO) porous metal oxide catalysts for the Guerbet coupling of ethanol to 1-butanol in a continuous flow reactor (320 °C, 0.1 MPa, LHSV = 15 mL g−1 h−1) at extended times on stream (~160 h). Two distinct regimes with different product distributions were observed for the Cu-PMO and CuNi-PMO catalyst with time on stream. At the start of the run, the initial conversion of ethanol dropped from about 85% to less than 20% after 60 h and acetaldehyde was the main product (regime 1). At prolonged times on stream (60–160 h), fairly constant low conversions of ethanol (14%) were observed and 1-butanol was the main product (regime 2). Performance of the monometallic Cu-PMO catalyst in terms of 1-butanol yield and stability was lower compared to the bi-metallic CuNi-PMO. Detailed catalyst characterization studies (XRD, H2-TPR, sorption of acrylic acid, TGA, TEM, HAADF-STEM, and EDS mapping) on both fresh and spent CuNi-PMO taken at various times on stream was performed to determine the changes in catalyst morphology and composition during a run, and particularly to obtain information on changes in catalyst structure operating in regime 1 or 2. The change in chemoselectivity is in line with an increase in basicity of the catalyst at extended runtimes

    The Zuo Jin Wan Formula Induces Mitochondrial Apoptosis of Cisplatin-Resistant Gastric Cancer Cells via Cofilin-1

    Despite the status of cisplatin (DDP) as a classical chemotherapeutic agent in the treatment of cancer, the development of multidrug resistance often leads to a failure of DDP therapy. Here we found that phosphorylated cofilin-1 (p-cofilin-1) was overexpressed in the DDP-resistant human gastric cancer cell lines SGC7901/DDP and BGC823/DDP, relative to the respective parent cell lines (SGC7901 and BGC823), and that DDP induced the dephosphorylation of p-cofilin-1 in both parent lines but not in the DDP-resistant lines. However, we noted that the traditional Chinese medicine formula Zuo Jin Wan (ZJW) could induce the dephosphorylation of p-cofilin-1 and promote cofilin-1 translocation from the cytoplasm into the mitochondria in both SGC7901/DDP and BGC823/DDP cells. This mitochondrial translocation of cofilin-1 was found to induce the conversion of filamentous actin to globular-actin, activate mitochondrial damage and calcium overloading, and induce the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. We further observed that these effects of ZJW on DDP-resistant human gastric cancer cell lines could be reversed via transfection with cofilin-1-specific siRNA, or treatment with a PP1 and PP2A inhibitor. These results suggest that ZJW is an effective drug therapy for patients with DDP-resistant gastric cancer

    Comorbidity and dementia: A nationwide survey in Taiwan

    Background Comorbid medical diseases are highly prevalent in the geriatric population, imposing hardship on healthcare services for demented individuals. Dementia also complicates clinical care for other co-existing medical conditions. This study investigated the comorbidities associated with dementia in the elderly population aged 65 years and over in Taiwan. Methods We conducted a nationwide, population-based, cross-sectional survey; participants were selected by computerized random sampling from all 19 Taiwan counties between December 2011 and March 2013. After exclusion of incomplete or erroneous data, 8,456 subjects were enrolled. Of them, 6,183 were cognitively normal (control group), 1,576 had mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 697 had dementia. We collected information about types of comorbidities (i.e., vascular risk factors, lung diseases, liver diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, and cancers), Charlson comorbidity index score, and demographic variables to compare subjects with normal cognition, MCI, and dementia. Results Regardless of the cognitive condition, over 60% of the individuals in each group had at least one comorbid disease. The proportion of subjects possessing at least three comorbidities was higher in those with cognitive impairment (MCI 20.9%, dementia 27.3%) than in control group (15%). Hypertension and diabetes mellitus were the most common comorbidities. The mean number of comorbidities and Charlson comorbidity index score were greater in MCI and dementia groups than in control group. Logistic regression demonstrated that the comorbidities significantly associated with MCI and dementia were cerebrovascular disease (OR 3.35, CI 2.62–4.28), cirrhosis (OR 3.29, CI 1.29–8.41), asthma (OR 1.56, CI 1.07–2.27), and diabetes mellitus (OR 1.24, CI 1.07–1.44). Conclusion Multiple medical comorbid diseases are common in older adults, especially in those with cognitive impairment. Cerebrovascular disease, cirrhosis, asthma, and diabetes mellitus are important contributors to cognitive deterioration in the elderly. Efforts to lower cumulative medical burden in the geriatric population may benefit cognitive function
