Observations of extragalactic masers in bright IRAS sources
We report the first results of an ongoing survey at 22 GHz with the 100-m
Effelsberg telescope to search for water maser emission in bright IRAS sources.
We have detected water vapor emission in IC 342. The maser, associated with a
star forming region ~10-15 arcsec west of the nucleus, consists of a single 0.5
km/s wide feature and reaches an isotropic luminosity of 0.01 L(sun) (D = 1.8
Mpc). Our detection raises the detection rate among northern galaxies with IRAS

The COINS Sample - VLBA Identifications of Compact Symmetric Objects
We present results of multifrequency polarimetric VLBA observations of 34
compact radio sources. The observations are part of a large survey undertaken
to identify CSOs Observed in the Northern Sky (COINS). Compact Symmetric
Objects (CSOs) are of particular interest in the study of the physics and
evolution of active galaxies. Based on VLBI continuum surveys of ~2000 compact
radio sources, we have defined a sample of 52 CSOs and CSO candidates. In this
paper, we identify 18 previously known CSOs, and introduce 33 new CSO
candidates. We present continuum images at several frequencies and, where
possible, images of the polarized flux density and spectral index distributions
for the 33 new candidates and one previously known but unconfirmed source. We
find evidence to support the inclusion of 10 of these condidates into the class
of CSOs. Thirteen candidates, including the previously unconfirmed source, have
been ruled out. Eleven sources require further investigation. The addition of
the 10 new confirmed CSOs increases the size of this class of objects by 50%.Comment: 24 pages, incl 8 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ. Figure

Arkansas Field Botany (Flora and Vegetation) Bibliography (1988-2000)
The floristic richness and diversity of vegetation in Arkansas continues to require and stimulate a growing body of taxonomic and ecological research publications. Peck and Peck (1988) listed 766 references, including those of the two prior lists. Since then we have gathered 417 additional references. The total list now contains 1,183 references, with 70% prepared or published since 1970. This update is provided for four reasons: 1) to compile a comprehensive source to direct and facilitate future studies, 2) to provide easier access to many reports not normally located in electronic databases, 3) to improve communications with botanists outside Arkansas, and 4) to support the ongoing and active efforts of those involved in the production of a manual to the Arkansas Vascular Flora and a book-length treatment of the vegetation of Arkansas. Future plans include placing the entire list on the Internet and developing of a means of updating the list every year

This report presents the results of an investigation undertaken to determine the feasibility of making glide landings in gusty air. Wind velocities were measured at several stations between the ground and a height of 51 feet, and flight tests were made to determine the actual influence of gusts on an airplane gliding close to the ground

A Compact Supermassive Binary Black Hole System
We report on the discovery of a supermassive binary black hole system in the
radio galaxy 0402+379, with a projected separation between the two black holes
of just 7.3 pc. This is the closest black hole pair yet found by more than two
orders of magnitude. These results are based upon recent multi-frequency
observations using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) which reveal two
compact, variable, flat-spectrum, active nuclei within the elliptical host
galaxy of 0402+379. Multi-epoch observations from the VLBA also provide
constraints on the total mass and dynamics of the system. Low spectral
resolution spectroscopy using the Hobby-Eberly Telescope indicates two velocity
systems with a combined mass of the two black holes of ~1.5 x 10^8 solar
masses. The two nuclei appear stationary while the jets emanating from the
weaker of the two nuclei appear to move out and terminate in bright hot spots.
The discovery of this system has implications for the number of close binary
black holes that might be sources of gravitational radiation. Green Bank
Telescope observations at 22 GHz to search for water masers in this interesting

Measurement of the ΔS=-ΔQ Amplitude from K_(e3)^0 Decay
We have measured the time distribution of the π^+e^-ν and π^-e^+ν modes from initial K^0's in a spark-chamber experiment performed at the Bevatron. From 1079 events between 0.2 and 7 K_S^0 lifetime, we find ReX=-0.069±0.036, ImX=+0.108_(-0.074)^(+0.092). This result is consistent with X=0 (relative probability = 0.25), but more than 4 standard deviations from the existing world average, +0.14 -0.13i
Polarimetry of Compact Symmetric Objects
We present multi-frequency VLBA observations of two polarized Compact
Symmetric Objects (CSOs), J0000+4054 and J1826+1831, and a polarized CSO
candidate, J1915+6548. Using the wavelength-squared dependence of Faraday
rotation, we obtained rotation measures (RMs) of -180 \pm 10 rad m^-2 and 1540
\pm 7 rad m^-2 for the latter two sources. These are lower than what is
expected of CSOs (several 1000 rad m^-2) and, depending on the path length of
the Faraday screens, require magnetic fields from 0.03 to 6 \mu G. These CSOs
may be more heavily affected by Doppler boosting than their unpolarized
counterparts, suggesting that a jet-axis orientation more inclined towards the
line of sight is necessary to detect any polarization. This allows for low RMs
if the polarized components are oriented away from the depolarizing
circumnuclear torus. These observations also add a fourth epoch to the proper
motion studies of J0000+4054 and J1826+1831, constraining their kinematic age
estimates to >610 yrs and 2600 \pm 490 yrs, respectively. The morphology,
spectrum, and component motions of J1915+6548 are discussed in light of its new
classification as a CSO candidate, and its angle to the line of sight (~50\deg)
