    AbstractThe classical gambler's ruin problem, i.e., a random walk along a line may be viewed graph theoretically as a random walk along a path with the endpoints as absorbing states. This paper is an investigation of the natural generalization of this problem to that of a particle walking randomly on a tree with the endpoints as absorbing barriers. Expressions in terms of the graph structure are obtained from the probability of absorption at an endpoint e in a walk originating from a vertex v, as well as for the expected length of the walk

    The frustration/satisfaction level in relation to needs of non-commissioned officers' wives at a naval base

    The purpose of this study was to examine the life satisfaction of the wives of naval non-commissioned officers living in an isolated military suburb. As little is known about this phenomenon an exploratory design was used. A sample group of 81 wives was selected by means of stratified random sampling. Measuring instruments used were the Heimler Scale of Social Functioning and a needs assessment. The results of the study indicated that although a small majority of the wives experience their lives as satisfactory they have a great deal of frustration. The two largest areas of low satisfaction was work and finances. It seems that these wives have sufficient support systems. The lack of transport seems to be a problem for these wives. The needs assessment identified a great interest in, and a need for certain courses, hobbies, aerobic classes and a daycare centre.Social WorkM.A. (Social Science (Mental Health)

    Analysis of farmer’s choices for climate change adaptation practices in South-Western Uganda, 1980–2009

    Climate change is a serious threat to the livelihoods of rural communities, particularly in mountainous areas because they are very sensitive to such changes. In this study, we assessed the household determinants to climate change adaptation drawing from a case study of agricultural adaptation in the Mount Rwenzori area of South Western Uganda. The study identified the major adaptation practices that are adopted by farmers to cope with the impacts of climate change and using available on-farm technologies. A total of 143 smallholder farmers were sampled and interviewed using field based questionnaires, field observations, and key informant interviews. Data was cleaned, entered and analysed using SPSS and Stata software for descriptive statistics. Thereafter, a Multinomial logistic regression model was used to assess the drivers of farmers’ choice for adaptation practices, factors influencing the choice of adaptation, and barriers. The major adaptation practices that were identified included; use of different crop varieties, tree planting, soil and water conservation, early and late planting, and furrow irrigation. Discrete choice model results indicated the age of the household head, experience in farming, household size, climate change shocks, land size, use of agricultural inputs, landscape position (location), and crop yield varied significantly (p > 0.05), which influenced farmers’ choice of climate change adaptation practices. The main barriers to adaptation included inadequate information on adaptation methods and financial constraints, leading us to conclude that contextual adaptation practices are more desirable for adoption to farmers. Adapting to climate change needs support from government and other stakeholders, however the implementation is more successful when appropriate and suitable choices are employed

    Object Relations in the Museum: A Psychosocial Perspective

    This article theorises museum engagement from a psychosocial perspective. With the aid of selected concepts from object relations theory, it explains how the museum visitor can establish a personal relation to museum objects, making use of them as an ‘aesthetic third’ to symbolise experience. Since such objects are at the same time cultural resources, interacting with them helps the individual to feel part of a shared culture. The article elaborates an example drawn from a research project that aimed to make museum collections available to people with physical and mental health problems. It draws on the work of the British psychoanalysts Donald Winnicott and Wilfred Bion to explain the salience of the concepts of object use, potential space, containment and reverie within a museum context. It also refers to the work of the contemporary psychoanalyst Christopher Bollas on how objects can become evocative for individuals both by virtue of their intrinsic qualities and by the way they are used to express personal idiom

    Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has a reported incidence of 1-2/100,000 person-years. It is estimated that there are 5000 people with ALS in the UK at any one time; however, the true figure and geographical distribution, are unknown. In this study, we describe the establishment of a population register for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland and report-estimated incidence. Methods: People with a diagnosis of ALS given by a consultant neurologist and whose postcode of residence is within England, Wales, or Northern Ireland were eligible. The catchment area was based on six data contributors that had been participating since 2016. All centres included in this analysis were in England, and therefore Wales and Northern Ireland are not included in this report. Crude age- and sex-specific incidence rates were estimated using population census records for the relevant postcodes from Office of National Statistics census data. These rates were standardized to the UK population structure using direct standardization. Results: There were 232 people in the database with a date of diagnosis between 2017 and 2018, when missing data were imputed there were an estimated 287-301 people. The denominator population of the catchment area is 7,251,845 according to 2011 UK census data. Age- and sex-adjusted incidence for complete cases was 1.61/100,000 person-years (95% confidence interval 1.58, 1.63), and for imputed datasets was 2.072/100,000 person-years (95% CI 2.072, 2.073). Discussion: We found incidence in this previously unreported area of the UK to be similar to other published estimates. As the MND Register for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland grows we will update incidence estimates and report on further analyses

    Upper cenozoic volcanic rocks in the Mariana Forearc recovered from drilling at ocean drilling program site 781: implications for forearc magmatism

    A horst block was drilled in the center of the Mariana forearc near 20°N during leg 125 of the Ocean Drilling Program. At this site 781, the drill penetrated a Pleistocene vesicular, porphyritic basalt at 72 m below the seafloor, and the top of the basalt corresponds to a high-amplitude reflection on seismic reflection profiles across the site. The thickness of the basalt unit can only be estimated to be between 13 and 25 m because of poor core recovery (28% to 55%). The presence of an upper glassy chilled zone and a lower, fine-grained margin suggest that the basalt unit is either a single lava flow or a near-surface sill. The basalt is an island-arc tholeiite (IAT) enriched in large-ion-lithophile elements relative to high-field-strength elements, similar to the submarine lavas of the southern Mariana Arc seamounts. The basalt layer, the youngest in situ igneous layer reported from the Izu-Bonin and Mariana forearcs, is enigmatic because of its location more than 100 km from the active volcanic arc. The sediment layers above and below the basalt unit are late Pliocene (about 2.5 Ma) and normally magnetized. The basalt has schlieren - like structures, reverse magnetization, and a K-Ar age of 1.68 ± 0.37 Ma. Thus, the basalt layer is probably a sill fed by magma intruded along a fault zone bounding the horst and graben in the forearc. The geochemistry of the basalt is consistent with a magma source similar to that of rocks from the magmatic axis (or volcanic front) of the island arc, and derived from a mantle source above the subducting Pacific plate

    The intravenous pharmacokinetics of butorphanol and detomidine dosed in combination compared with individual dose administrations to exercised horses

    In equine and racing practice, detomidine and butorphanol are commonly used in combination for their sedative properties. The aim of the study was to produce detection times to better inform European veterinary surgeons, so that both drugs can be used appropriately under regulatory rules. Three independent groups of 7, 8 and 6 horses, respectively, were given either a single intravenous administration of butorphanol (100 mu g/kg), a single intravenous administration of detomidine (10 mu g/kg) or a combination of both at 25 (butorphanol) and 10 (detomidine) mu g/kg. Plasma and urine concentrations of butorphanol, detomidine and 3-hydroxydetomidine at predetermined time points were measured by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The intravenous pharmacokinetics of butorphanol dosed individually compared with co-administration with detomidine had approximately a twofold larger clearance (646 +/- 137 vs. 380 +/- 86 ml hr(-1) kg(-1)) but similar terminal half-life (5.21 +/- 1.56 vs. 5.43 +/- 0.44 hr). Pseudo-steady-state urine to plasma butorphanol concentration ratios were 730 and 560, respectively. The intravenous pharmacokinetics of detomidine dosed as a single administration compared with co-administration with butorphanol had similar clearance (3,278 +/- 1,412 vs. 2,519 +/- 630 ml hr(-1) kg(-1)) but a slightly shorter terminal half-life (0.57 +/- 0.06 vs. 0.70 +/- 0.11 hr). Pseudo-steady-state urine to plasma detomidine concentration ratios are 4 and 8, respectively. The 3-hydroxy metabolite of detomidine was detected for at least 35 hr in urine from both the single and co-administrations. Detection times of 72 and 48 hr are recommended for the control of butorphanol and detomidine, respectively, in horseracing and equestrian competitions
