Global fit to transitions
We perform a general model-independent analysis of transitions, including measurements of ,
, their differential distributions, the recently
measured longitudinal polarization , and constraints from the
lifetime, each of which has significant impact on
the fit. A global fit to a general set of Wilson coefficients of an effective
low-energy Hamiltonian is presented, the solutions of which are interpreted in
terms of hypothetical new-physics mediators. From the obtained results we
predict selected observables, such as the baryonic
transition , the ratio
, the forward-backward asymmetries , the polarization asymmetries
, and the longitudinal polarization fraction
. The latter shows presently a slight tension with any new-physics
model, such that an improved measurement could have an important impact. We
also discuss the potential change due the very recently announced preliminary
measurement by the Belle collaboration.Comment: 47 pages, 12 figures. Version published at JHE
The earlier arrival of spring and longer autumns than 50 years ago makes the leaves of deciduous trees prolong their period of activity. This directly affects aspects such as CO2 absorption, availability of water or methane emissions. Therefore more in depth studies on seasonal changes are essential for the creation of better climate models
Herbaria century record of increasing eutrophication in Spanish terrestrial ecosystems
Additional biological evidence is presented for the alteration of biogeochemical cycles by human activities. The leaf δ15N and the concentrations of nutrients in herbarium specimens of 24 species of vascular plants and 3 species of bryophytes collected in northern and eastern regions of Spain have substantially changed throughout the XX century. In the second half of the century, when anthropogenic nitrogen fixation and mobilization started to increase rapidly, leaf δ15N values started to decrease strongly, indicating that additional anthropogenic nitrogen is being retained in Spanish terrestrial ecosystems. The concentration of nutrients in vascular plants did not present any clear pattern, but there were increasing concentrations of N and other nutrients (P, K, and S) in the last decades in bryophytes, which are usually better biomonitors of airborne chemicals than vascular plants. Important consequences for ecosystem structure and functioning such as enhancement of the carbon sink or changes in community biodiversity and species distribution may be expected from this increase in eutrophication
Overview on current and past global changes in the Mediterranean ecosystems
Atmospheric increases in CO, and other greenhouse gases are the basis of Global Change. The effects on ecosystems are not yet well known. Effects on Mediterranean ecosystems are even less known. Some of the current knowledge on direct and indirect (through climate changes) effects on Mediterranean ecosystems is presented. Recent data from historical plant material are highlighted to discuss the biological changes already produced after several decades of Global Change.
