Neuroblastoma is a highly metastatic tumor that emerges from neural crest cell progenitors. Focal Adhesion Kinase (FAK) is a regulator of cell migration that binds to the receptor Neogenin-1 and is upregulated in neuroblastoma. Here, we show that Netrin-1 ligand binding to Neogenin-1 leads to FAK autophosphorylation and integrin 尾1 activation in a FAK dependent manner, thus promoting neuroblastoma cell migration. Moreover, Neogenin-1, which was detected in all tumor stages and was required for neuroblastoma cell migration, was found in a complex with integrin 尾1, FAK, and Netrin-1. Importantly, Neogenin-1 promoted neuroblastoma metastases in an immunodeficient mouse model. Taken together, these data show that Neogenin-1 is a metastasis-promoting protein that associates with FAK, activates integrin 尾1 and promotes neuroblastoma cell migration. This work was supported by the Comisi贸n Nacional de Investigaci贸n Cient铆fica y Tecnol贸gica [21130521]; Fondo Nacional de Desarrollo Cient铆fico y Tecnol贸gico [1140697]; Fondo Nacional de Desarrollo Cient铆fico y Tecnol贸gico [1180495]; Red Tem谩tica de Investigaci贸n Cooperativa en Cancer [RD12/0036/0027]; SAF [SAF2015-65175-R]; Red Tem谩tica de Investigaci贸n Cooperativa en Cancer [RD12/0036/0027]; PSG: Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovaci贸n y Universidades and FEDER funds (RTI2018-093596); JGC: Ministerio de Econom铆a y Competitividad of Spain (PI17CIII/00013), Consejer铆a de Educaci贸n, Juventud y Deporte, Comunidad de Madrid (P2017/BMD-3692), Fundaci贸n Oncohematolog铆a Infantil, AFANION, and Asociaci贸n Pablo Ugarte.S

Hyperbaric Oxygen Increases Stem Cell Proliferation, Angiogenesis and Wound-Healing Ability of WJ-MSCs in Diabetic Mice

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is effective for the medical treatment of diverse diseases, infections, and tissue injury. In fact, in recent years there is growing evidence on the beneficial effect of HBOT on non-healing ischemic wounds. However, there is still yet discussion on how this treatment could benefit from combination with regenerative medicine strategies. Here we analyzed the effects of HBOT on three specific aspects of tissue growth, maintenance, and regeneration: (i) modulation of adult rodent (Mus musculus) intestinal stem cell turnover rates; (ii) angiogenesis dynamics during the development of the chorio-allantoic membrane (CAM) in Gallus gallus embryos; (iii) and wound-healing in a spontaneous type II diabetic mouse model with a low capacity to regenerate skin. To analyze these aspects of tissue growth, maintenance, and regeneration, we used HBOT alone or in combination with cellular therapy. Specifically, Wharton Jelly Mesenchymal Stem cells (WJ-MSC) were embedded in a commercial collagen-scaffold. HBOT did not affect the metabolic rate of adult mice nor of chicken embryos. Notwithstanding, HBOT modified the proliferation rate of stem cells in the mice small intestinal crypts, increased angiogenesis in the CAM, and improved wound-healing and tissue repair in diabetic mice. Moreover, our study demonstrates that combining stem cell therapy and HBOT has a collaborative effect on wound-healing. In summary, our data underscore the importance of oxygen tension as a regulator of stem cell biology and support the potential use of oxygenation in clinical treatments

In this zone of high agricultural activity there are artificial ponds intended for irrigation which can generate environments that constitute alternative habitats for development and nesting of waterbirds. Despite the existence of census data in these types of ponds, there are no studies addressing climatic seasonality as a factor which could influence temporal variability and abundance of the ornithological population. With this purpose, we studied temporal changes of the bird community in two types of ponds in the metropolitan region (33掳 29' S - 70掳 54' W): a seasonal-type pond with pluvial regime that dries during summer season, and a managed pond, with permanent wastewater flow. In the pond with pluvial regime we observed a seasonal variation in the abundance of birds, which correlates positively with the Martonne's aridity index. On the other hand, the abundance remained relatively constant in the controlled environment, registering a non significant increase of the abundance during the summer season. Moreover, we observed in the two types of ponds; seasonal changes in the composition of the assemblage, numeric variation of certain populations and dispersion of birds between near ponds by the effects of summer desiccation. Finally, we discuss the importance of the controlled regime pond (e.g. water treatment plants or wastewater pond) as optional summer habitats during the desiccation process of seasonal sites

Results of analysis from feathers recovered in the Early Formative (ca. 2700 B.P.) Tul谩n-122 site are presented. The site is located in Quebrada Tul谩n on the eastern slope of the Puna de Atacama. Macroscopic features (coloration and size) of taxidermic and zoorachaeological samples were compared. A protocol for the preparation of feather barbules was performed and the nodes were studied by using amplification (1400X). The genus Sicalis (Boie 1828) was identified. Results of the feather and bones are compared in order to discuss the taphonomic variables and interpretation of the use of birs in the site.

Metabolic enzymes in seasonally acclimatized and cold acclimated rufous-collared sparrow inhabiting a Chilean Mediterranean environment

Due to the higher energy requirements of birds during winter, it is predicted that the activities of metabolic enzymes (e.g., citrate synthase, CS and cytochrome C oxidase, COX) should increase in tandem with increases in rates of energy expenditure (e.g., basal metabolic rate, BMR). However, there is mixed support for the hypothesis of enzymatic acclimatization. Furthermore, there is little information about the effect of ambient temperature on energetics and tissue enzyme activity levels in passerines inhabiting seasonal Mediterranean environments. In this study we evaluated the interplay between BMR and enzyme activities of freshly caught individuals of the passerine Zonotrichia capensis in winter and summer in a Mediterranean environment from central Chile, and also in warm (30 掳C) and cold (15 掳C) lab-acclimated birds. The results revealed a lack of seasonal variation in BMR, thermal conductance and in the activity of CS and COX. However, we found higher BMR and lower thermal con

In the pre-Hispanic hallucinogenic complex of the Circum-Puna area (Atacama Desert in Chile and Northwestern in Argentina), there is a particular style of snuff tray that stands out; its general shape corresponds to that of the armadillo or quirquincho (families Dasypodidae and Chlamyphoridae of the order Cingulata). This article investigates the possible meaning of its depiction across various mediums, as well as the use of the animal鈥檚 anatomical parts in the manufacture of musical instruments and other psychotropic paraphernalia. By compiling material from different archaeological collections, together with a review of bibliographic sources, we provide evidence of the funerary contexts of such objects. We also discuss the role played by the armadillo in Circum-Puna beliefs. This is supported by ethnographic and zoological data and forms the basis for suggesting a unique relationship between this animal and the use of hallucinogens. We propose that the underlying connection between them is rooted in the worship of fertility associated with rainwater and a conceivable distribution route in the ritual exchange of armadillos that might encompass the Gran Chaco, northwestern Argentina and the Atacama Desert in Chile, particularly the Loa area, in a broad sense from east to west.Fil: Horta Tricalloti, Helena.
