[ENG] This paper reviews the basic concepts related to notions of variation and functional variation, in particular register, and it questions whether these concepts have been taken into account by the lexicographic tradition. The paper focuses on which are the most suitable marks to recognize several aspects connected with the usage of lexical items: on the one hand the field (topic), the mode (channel), the tenor (purpose), and the tone (formality), as the register' s components; and on the other hand, various factors concerning cultural, enunciative, and textual grounds

Es pot normativitzar la pragmàtica? Algunes reflexions i alguna proposta.

[cat] Aquest article analitza les relacions entre la pragmàtica i la normativització, amb especial referència al cas de la llengua catalana. Malgrat que la pragmàtica se sol considerar un terreny on les normes tenen el sentit només de guies estilístiques o regles de control (més aviat laxes), la gramàtica prescriptiva no se'n pot desentendre, altrament la prescripció resultarà absurda o inadequada.[eng] This article analyses the relationship between pragmatics and prescriptive grammar, with special reference to the case of the Catalan language. Although pragmatics is usually envisaged as a field in which rules must be understood only as stylistic guidelines or (rather loose) principles of control, prescriptive grammars cannot ignore pragmatic con siderations, otherwise lingüistic prescription would be absurd or inappropriate

Del present imperfecte i dels futurs de probabilitat, o entorn de la filologia, la lingüística, l'anàlisi crítica del discurs i les ciències de la comunicació

What is the aim today of talking about philology, either in absolute terms or related to other concepts such as linguistics or language sciences? On the one hand, it seems unfair to resort to metaphors that pair (traditional) philology and (textual) necrophilia. On the other hand, turning our back on the reality is not the appropriate response to current problems: a more applied training (in the professional field) is needed, and (in the scientific context) the frontiers should be pushed back, because the old ones are obsolete and in need of reappraisal. Faced with a past and a present that are inevitably imperfect, this article is a reflection on the chances of a future in which philology (in the classical sense) is accompanied by language and communication sciences. The reason for this situation and for this specific proposal is not simply to follow the fashion or to embrace modernity, as the winner of the debate with antiquity: the aim is to try to provide a fuller professional training (a less erudite one) and a more interdisciplinary, less localist area of study. The context of the article is provided by comment on a brief series of sociopolitical and cultural events in our setting, all of them previous to the elections to the Parliament of Catalonia in November 2006. Any analysis of events of this kind, even the most superficial, shows that philologists or linguists should not undervalue a critical competence which, in its turn, should be transmitted to students as one of the skills involved in the processes of teaching, learning and knowledge transfer. Instead of limiting itself to the fields of grammar and history of literature, an imaginative (not imaginary) philology need to be open to criticism and communication. If the natural epistemological context of philology (of any philology) is also that of communication, we should not object to the efforts to strengthen the lines of convergence rather than divergence and contrast. Can a philology without communication produce anything but unemployable professionals? A clever (indirect) answer: although we may only be a fully-fledged nation in the preamble (not in the text) we should try hard to rescue our philology from the twilight zone

Barbarismes, manlleus i interferències. Sobre la terminologia dels contactes interlingüístics

La finalitat d'aquest article apunta a l'aclariment d'una sèrie de problemes que sorgeixen de la terminologia aplicada als fenòmens derivats dels contactes entre llengües. Almenys, confio que les pagines següents oferiran al lector un panorama de les nocions i dels termes utilitzats en aquest camp i de les possibilitats -en una hipotètica tria- d'establir una terminologia si més no coherent amb les finalitats de cada investigació o treball concrets. La justificació de l'article -com en certa manera es pot deduir de les paraules precedents- radica en les múltiples confusions i imprecisions que deriven del vocabulari terminològic usualment emprat per referir-se als fenòmens resultants de les influències interlingüístiques. Limito d'entrada el terreny adoptant una perspectiva estrictament lingüística i centrant-me en el cas del català

Although modern linguistics has (theoretically) supported the primacy of the analysis of oral language over written texts, the comparison of studies based on the two kinds of analysis show the tradition of studies on many aspects of oraility. This paper, based on the statement above, presents a number of problems originated in the study of oral language and its different modes. The obstacles and difficulties are present during all stages of the research: from the data selection and collection (unthinkable without clear objectives) to problems dealing with the transcription and analysis of the data and to the limitation of variables, which are the essence of variation

Ambiguity differs especially according to the register or functional variety of the language being considered: in this paper, the phenomenon is analysed in relation to everyday language, literary language and specialist language (technolects), and various pragmatic and discursive strategies that explain the differences between these registers are noted

Estudis de pragmàtica i anàlisi del discurs sobre la llengua catalana: un repàs de l'etapa 1997-2012

Aquest article fa una revisió panoràmica, descriptiva i en part valorativa, dels estudis de pragmàtica i anàlisi del discurs que, entre 1997 i 2012, s'han desenvolupat en relació amb la llengua catalana. Subdividint aquestes dues grans àrees en apartats temàtics, es fa veure com la lingüística catalana, que ha tractat en molta profunditat temes gramaticals, fonètics, històrics, lexicogràfics, dialectals i sociolingüístics, té un compte pendent, encara, amb la línia pragmàtica i discursiva. Els estudis corresponents, per bé que en alguns casos s'han situat en un nivell internacional, mostren també llacunes, subàrees poc desenvolupades, amb poca tradició. També s'apunta que la necessitat d'analitzar pragmàticament i discursivament la societat i la cultura catalanes és evident, tant com la d'integrar els estudis en el conjunt crosscultural de pràctiques comunicatives d'arreu. El sentit d'una pragmàtica i una anàlisi del discurs catalanes implica l'anàlisi pertinent de singularitats, on localisme i globalisme no representen extrems irreconciliables, sinó dimensions complementàries i que s'exigeixen mútuament

The oral corpora in Catalan and research into casual Catalan: the corpora of conversation and functional varieties of the Corpus de Català Contemporani de la Universitat de Barcelona (CCCUB)

The aim of this study is to present a set of corpora of casual Catalan (especially oral and colloquial) gathered together in the VARCOM and PRAGMAESTIL projects carried out over the past twenty years at the University of Barcelona. The research has been conducted by the Grup d'Estudi de la Variació (GEV-UB), in particular by the Grup d'Estudis de Pragmàtica i Anàlisi del Discurs (GrEPAD). This paper reviews an oral corpus of colloquial conversation (COC, 2002), an oral corpus of registers (COR, 2004) and an audiovisual oral corpus of textual varieties (CAP, 2008). In the CAP, for the first time the images of the interlocutors are shown as they speak, alongside the transcribed texts. This paper focuses on the qualitative and research-oriented nature of these corpora. The final part of the text underlines the research possibilities that the corpora offer and also highlights the gaps remaining in the field of corpus linguistics applied to Catalan and its oral varieties

Un exercici d'anàlisi del context (Apunts d'Etnografia de la Comunicació)

Algú ha dit més d'una vegada que l'invent del magnetòfon assenyala una de les revolucions més transcendentals en la història de la lingüística, i probablement algú altre ja deu haver dit també que l'invent del vídeo ha esdevingut fonamental en els estudis comunicatius i, en particular, en els d'anàlisi de discurs. En efecte, aquest aparell diabòlic, amb els corresponents sistemes d'enregistrament i reproducció, no tan sols permet immortalitzar memorables escenes familiars i participar en innombrables i generosos programes de televisió, sinó que a més fa possible, en un terreny més acadèmic, enregistrar mostres de parla contextualitzada; com a mínim, més contextualitzada que el que s'aconsegueix amb un magnetòfon (naturalment no cal dir que la reproducció perfecta dels esdeveniments de parla originals és impossible)
