The Chemical Recycling of Polyesters for a Circular Plastics Economy: Challenges and Emerging Opportunities

    Get PDF
Whilst plastics have played an instrumental role in human development, growing environmental concerns have led to increasing public scrutiny and demands for outright bans. This has stimulated considerable research into renewable alternatives, and more recently, the development of alternative waste management strategies. Herein, the aim was to highlight recent developments in the catalytic chemical recycling of two commercial polyesters, namely poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). The concept of chemical recycling is first introduced, and associated opportunities/challenges are discussed within the context of the governing depolymerisation thermodynamics. Chemical recycling methods for PLA and PET are then discussed, with a particular focus on upcycling and the use of metalā€based catalysts. Finally, the attention shifts to the emergence of new materials with the potential to modernise the plastics economy. Emerging opportunities and challenges are discussed within the context of industrial feasibility

Learning and living : Connecting graduate education in natrual resources with the scholarship of engaged learning institutions and the outreach mission of land-grant universities

    Get PDF
The future will involve a lifetime of learning for those who intend to work or live meaningful, productive lives, especially in the fields of natural resources management. Land-grant universities always have recognized this need for lifelong learning of both professionals and citizens. In order for land-grant universities to reach their full potential as learning institutions engaged with communities, they will need to initiate new forms of leadership within an expanded paradigm that maintains core values while altering the way they serve their students and public. New educational models are needed at the graduate level in natural resources. These new models should be designed to meet growing demand among learners for direct application of content to work settings, and for greater understanding of the dynamic complexity and often-interdisciplinary nature of knowledge. There is also the need to develop capacities among our graduate students for partnership building and leadership for change

Visceral adipose tissue activated macrophage content and inflammatory adipokine secretion is higher in pre-eclampsia than in healthy pregnancy

    Get PDF
Obesity increases preeclampsia risk. Adipose tissue inflammation may contribute to the clinical syndrome of pre-eclampsia. We compared adipose tissue macrophage infiltration and release of pro-inflammatory adipokines in pre-eclampsia and healthy pregnancy. Subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue biopsies were collected from healthy (n=13) and preeclampsia (n=13) mothers. Basal and lipopolysaccharide stimulated adipocyte TNFĪ±, IL-6, CCL-2 and CRP release was measured. Adipose tissue cell densities of activated (cfms(+)) and total (CD68(+)) macrophages were determined. In pre-eclampsia only, visceral adipose tissue TNFĪ± release was increased after lipopolysaccharide stimulation (57 [76] vs 81 [97] pg/mL/ug DNA, p=0.030). Basal TNFĪ± release was negatively correlated insulin sensitivity of visceral adipocytes (r=-0.61, p=0.030) in pre-eclampsia. Visceral adipocyte IL-6 release was increased after lipopolysaccharide stimulation in pre-eclampsia only (566 [696] vs 852 [914] pg/mL/ugDNA, p=0.019). Visceral adipocyte CCL-2 basal (67 [61] vs 187 [219] pg/mL/ugDNA, p=0.049) and stimulated (46 [46] vs 224 [271] pg/mL/ugDNA, p=0.003) release was greater than in subcutaneous adipocytes in pre-eclampsia only. In pre-eclampsia, median TNF mRNA expression in visceral adipose tissue was higher than controls (1.94 [1.13-4.14] vs 0.8 [0.00-1.27] TNF / PPIA ratio, p=0.006). In visceral adipose tissue, CSF1R (a marker of activated macrophages) mRNA expression (24.8[11.0] vs 51.0[29.9] CSF1R/PPIA ratio, p=0.011) and activated (cfms+) macrophage count (6.7[2.6] vs 15.2[8.8] % cfms+/adipocyte, p=0.031) were higher in pre-eclampsia than in controls. In conclusion, our study demonstrates dysregulation of inflammatory pathways predominantly in visceral adipose tissue in pre-eclampsia. Inflammation of visceral adipose tissue may mediate many of the adverse metabolic effects associated with pre-eclampsia

Aggregation of the Southern Pine Beetle in Response to Attractive Host Trees

    Get PDF
Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmerman were attracted to shortleaf pines, Pinus echinata MilL, using infested shortleaf pine bolts. Response was monitored during the ensuing mass attack period by the use of sticky traps suspended along the tree boles. Uninfested host materials or host materials containing only male beetles did not elicit mass attack of trees. Female beetles either alone or in combination with males, usually stimulated mass attack within 24 h. Traps at 3-4 m above the ground caught the greatest number (26.7%) of beetles. Trap catches peaked on the 3rd day of attack and declined rapidly thereafter. Daily flight activity was greatest at ca. 1700 h during the summer. Male beetles outnumbered females by a ratio of 1:0.86. The sex ratio of trapped beetles varied consistently both diurnally and over the mass attack period

Which anthropometric and lower body power variables are predictive of professional and amateur playing status in male rugby union players?

The purpose of this study was to compare anthropometric and lower body power measurements between current professional and amateur male rugby union players. The present study also sought to determine which anthropometric and physical performance variables were predictive of playing standard. Thirty professional and 30 amateur RU players performed Wattbike 6ā€‰s maximal effort (WB6S) and countermovement (CMJ) and squat jump (SJ) assessments, anthropometric measures were also taken. Dependant variables recorded and analysed including: body mass, stature, Ī£8 site skinfolds, WB6S absolute and relative peak power, CMJ and SJ average concentric force, jump height, peak velocity, time to peak force, rate of force development (RFD) and absolute and relative peak force and power. Professional players were heavier, taller and leaner than their amateur counterparts (pā€‰<ā€‰0.05). Professional players performed significantly better in all physical performance measures except CMJ and SJ time to peak force, CMJ RFD and SJ relative peak force. Variables which were predictive of playing standard were: Ī£8 skinfolds, CMJ peak velocity and WB6S absolute and relative peak power (pā€‰<ā€‰0.05). These findings indicate that the current body of male professional RU players is anthropometrically and physically superior to their amateur counterparts, although not all variables assessed here were predictive of playing standard. Data presented here indicate that Ī£8 skinfolds, WB6S absolute and relative power and CMJ peak velocity are predictive of playing standard, whereas other anthropometric and strength and power variables are not

Field Response of the Southern Pine Beetle to Behavioral Chemicals

    Get PDF
Field tests were conducted in East Texas in 1973-77 to evaluate the influence of 7 behavioral chemicals on the flight and landing behavior of the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmerman. A mixture of frontalin plus host tree volatiles attracted flying beetles within an infestation. Trans-verbenol synergized the activity of frontalin and substituted for host tree volatiles, expinene and loblolly turpentine. Verbenone in a 1: 1 ratio with frontalin did not significantly affect trap catch. At higher concentrations of verbenone, trap catch was significantly reduced. Endobrevicomin inhibited trap catch when added to an attractant-baited trap. Exo-brevicomin showed no inhibitory effect. Traps with a 1:4 mixture of endo-brevicomin and verbenone plus an attractant caught significantly fewer beetles than traps with the attractant plus either one of the inhibitors
