    The Five Ways.

    Get PDF
St. Thomas Aquinas (1224/5 – 74) offered his Five Ways, or five proofs for the existence of God, near the beginning of his magnum opus , the Summa theologiae (Part 1, Question 2, Article 3, the response). The Summa (ST), as it is often called, was written as a textbook for men in their priestly formation. It is well over 2,500 pages in a standard English translation from the Latin, but the Five Ways take up only slightly more than one page. Nevertheless, they are almost assuredly the most commented on section of the Summa and some of the most well - known arguments for the existence of God

The Psychology of Habit Formation and Christian Moral Wisdom on Virtue Formation

    Get PDF
In this paper, I provide an overview of the Christian moral wisdom with respect to virtue formation and character cultivation.  I focus in particular on some warnings issued by the great teachers on these topics with respect to the motivations one ought to have in the Christian life.  I then discuss some findings of contemporary psychology on habit formation which seem to be at odds with the warnings in Christian moral wisdom.  I argue that while there is surface discord between the contemporary psychology of habit formation and Christian moral wisdom, there is in fact a deep concord between them

ROTSE All Sky Surveys for Variable Stars I: Test Fields

The ROTSE-I experiment has generated CCD photometry for the entire Northern sky in two epochs nightly since March 1998. These sky patrol data are a powerful resource for studies of astrophysical transients. As a demonstration project, we present first results of a search for periodic variable stars derived from ROTSE-I observations. Variable identification, period determination, and type classification are conducted via automatic algorithms. In a set of nine ROTSE-I sky patrol fields covering about 2000 square degrees we identify 1781 periodic variable stars with mean magnitudes between m_v=10.0 and m_v=15.5. About 90% of these objects are newly identified as variable. Examples of many familiar types are presented. All classifications for this study have been manually confirmed. The selection criteria for this analysis have been conservatively defined, and are known to be biased against some variable classes. This preliminary study includes only 5.6% of the total ROTSE-I sky coverage, suggesting that the full ROTSE-I variable catalog will include more than 32,000 periodic variable stars.Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ 4/00. Growth in Patience in Christian Moral Wisdom and Contemporary Positive Psychology

    Get PDF
Moral education requires interdisciplinary engagement across philosophy, psychology, and education. Positive psychologists regularly acknowledge the breadth and depth of wisdom regarding the cultivation of virtues present in philosophical and religious texts and consult such writings when creating constructs, but they are less prone to integrate scientific findings with historical texts as inquiry proceeds. Thus, we provide a comparative analysis of the advice given in Lorenzo Scupoli’s The Spiritual Combat, from traditional Christian moral wisdom literature and the research findings from positive psychology on the cultivation of the virtue of patience. Points of convergence relate to the utility of engaging activities that include cognitive reappraisal, habit formation through daily practice, activating positive motivation, prayer, mantra/transcendental meditation, and cultivating elevation through meditation on moral exemplars. Areas of divergence include the advisability of suppression, the role of motivation, and necessity of spiritual intervention, which suggest areas for future inquiry in moral education

Dangerous implications of a minimum length in quantum gravity

The existence of a minimum length and a generalization of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle seem to be two fundamental ingredients required in any consistent theory of quantum gravity. In this letter we show that they would predict dangerous processes which are phenomenologically unacceptable. For example, long--lived virtual super--Planck mass black holes may lead to rapid proton decay. Possible solutions of this puzzle are briefly discussed.Comment: 5 pages, no figure. v3: refereed versio

Test of an interprofessional collaborative practice model to improve obesity-related health outcomes in Michigan

    Get PDF
The purpose of the study was to test the effectiveness of an interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) education program on clinicians\u27 and students\u27 knowledge and attitudes toward IPCP and to determine the effectiveness of an IPCP weight loss program in two nurse-managed centers. The study team used the Midwest Interprofessional Practice, Education, and Research Center (MIPERC) collaborative practice education program that consists of online learning modules followed by daily huddles and collaborative care planning. The obesity intervention program was implemented by faculty and staff practitioners and students in two clinics with very different patient populations (community residents and college students). Staff/faculty practitioners and students demonstrated statistically significant knowledge gains as a result of online learning modules (Introduction to IPE p \u3c .05; Motivational Interviewing p \u3c .001; Safety Behaviors p \u3c .001; Team Dynamics p \u3c .001). Small, but not statistically significant changes in attitudes toward IPCP were seen with both groups. At program completion, enrolled patients showed statistical significant (p \u3c .001) weight losses and decreases in body mass indices. Other health outcomes showed no significant changes (blood pressure, prevalence of smoking, exercise frequency or duration p \u3e .05). The study demonstrated the potential of an IPCP program to affect weight loss in two populations

Rapid Optical Followup Observations of SGR Events with ROTSE-I

    Get PDF
In order to observe nearly simultaneous emission from Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs), the Robotic Optical Transient Search Experiment (ROTSE) receives triggers via the GRB Coordinates Network (GCN). Since beginning operations in March, 1998, ROTSE has also taken useful data for 10 SGR events: 8 from SGR 1900+14 and 2 from SGR 1806-20. We have searched for new or variable sources in the error regions of these SGRs and no optical counterparts were observed. Limits are in the range m_ROTSE ~ 12.5 - 15.5 during the period 20 seconds to 1 hour after the observed SGR events.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
