The development of tourism at military-historical structures and sites : a case study of the building complexes of Project Riese in the Owl Mountains
Abstract
Introduction. During WWII, the Owl Mountains were the site of a large-scale military investment codenamed Riese. This project called for the construction of underground passages using concentration camp prisoners as laborers. Material and methods. On the basis of terrain inventory, analysis was conducted of the tourism management of six military-historical complexes of Project Riese and their environs. Tourists were polled to determine how attractive they found one of these - the Rzeczka complex - as a tourist destination. Results. The results obtained in the study led to the conclusion that the complexes' infrastructure and tourist attractions meet the needs of tourist activity in the area. In the case of the municipalities where complexes are located, it was determined that they are not being adequately developed. Conclusions. At present, the Project Riese complexes are seeing the development of various forms of tourism. An important problem with the development of tourism there is the conflict between the need to protect the environment and cultural heritage and the development of commercial and recreational tourism services.</jats:p
Analysis of dental maturation in relation to sagittal jaw relationships
BACKGROUND: The degree of mineralization of permanent tooth germs in dental age assessment has been an area of interest among many authors for years. However, only recently have researchers attempted to determine the potential interdependencies between dental age and jaw relationships. The aim of this work was to compare dental maturation in patients with skeletal Class II to patients with skeletal Classes I and III. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved 150 patients who sought orthodontic treatment. Dental age was assessed from panoramic radiographs using the Demirjian's method. Skeletal class was evaluated according to the value of the ANPg angle from the Björk's analysis. We used the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Student's t-test. RESULTS: The mean dental age in patients with skeletal Class III was significantly higher than the mean dental age in patients with skeletal Class II (p<0.0005). A correlation between the dental age and chronological age was established. The weakest correlation was seen between the dental age and skeletal Class II. Among patients with skeletal Class II, the strongest correlation was found between chronological age and the formation of the germ of the second lower premolar (r=0.67; p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Dental age among patients with skeletal Class II was the lowest
Corporate social responsibility of water and sanitation company in the Czech Republic - Case study
The issue discussed in this article concerns corporate social responsibility (CSR), which is playing an increasingly important role in the context of sustainable development of enterprises. The purpose of the current work was to assess the practices applied in the area of corporate social responsibility in water and sanitation companies, based on the opinions of employees and managers. The motivation for undertaking research on this topic resulted from the scarcity of scientific studies on the measurement of the corporate social responsibility concept in water and sanitization companies using a multidimensional approach based on the ISO 26000 standard. The study used methodological triangulation based on the use of qualitative and quantitative research methods to verify information from different sources. This approach allowed the authors to obtain the data more effectively and analyze the problem from numerous different perspectives. The study used an interview method that targeted water and sanitization utility staff. In-depth research was based on the case study method, which is particularly important when researching complex phenomena. For this purpose, surveys were carried out, the results of which indicate that corporate social responsibility of the surveyed enterprise is at a high level, and that there are statistically significant differences between individual dimensions of CSR. The results indicate that the surveyed company is oriented towards supporting activities in the area of corporate social responsibility, in accordance with the in the concept of sustainable development.Web of Science1413art. no. 398
Intentional poisonings in urban and rural children – a 6-year retrospective single centre study
Introduction
Intentional poisonings among children and adolescents are a problem not only for paediatricians, but also constitute a big issue for public health. In many countries worldwide, including Poland, an increase has been observed in suicidal behaviours at developmental age.
Objective
The aim of the study was a retrospective evaluation of patients hospitalized due to intentional poisoning in the Department of Paediatrics, Children’s University Hospital in Lublin, Poland, in 2007–2012.
Material and Methods
In the study period, 149 patients were hospitalized in the Paediatric Department of the Children’s University Hospital in Lublin, due to intentional poisoning with medicines or other chemical substances. The study group comprised 135 girls and 14 boys; The majority of patients (n=105) were urban inhabitants, and only 44 lived in the rural areas. Medical records were analyzed, with consideration of medical, psychological and psychiatric examinations.
Results
Girls constituted as much as 90.6% of the study group. The majority of patients lived in urban areas – 70.46%. A total of 16.77 % of patients came from incomplete families. Alcohol problem occurred in 19 families. The most frequent cause of a suicide attempt was conflict in the family, followed by school problems. During the 6-year-study period, an upward tendency in the incidence of intentional poisoning was observed, particularly in the first 4 years.
Discussion and conclusion
Suicide attempts in adolescents were mostly undertaken by girls from the urban environment. The majority of those attempts were caused by family problems, including alcoholism
Open charm measurements in NA61/SHINE at CERN SPS
The measurements of open charm production was proposed as an important tool to investigate the properties of
the hot and dense matter formed in nucleus-nucleus collisions as well as to provide the means for model independent interpretation of the existing data on J/ψ suppression. Recently, the experimental setup of the NA61/SHINE experiment was supplemented with a Vertex Detector which was motivated by the importance and the possibility of the first
direct measurements of open charm meson production in heavy ion collisions at SPS energies. First test data taken in December 2016 on Pb+Pb collisions at 150A GeV/c allowed to validate the general concept of D0 meson detection via its D0 → π+ + K− decay channel and delivered a first indication of open charm production.
The physics motivation of open charm measurements at SPS energies, pilot results on open charm production, and finally, the future plans of open charm measurements in the NA61/SHINE experiment after LS2 are presented
Why does it make a laugh? : the humor in Dominique Bréda's "Les dernières volontés"
The present article is an attempt to answer the question why the theatre art of Dominique Bréda entitled "Les Dernières Volontés" causes amusement. Breda build his play on the opposition of two characters: Hélène Volontés and Ludivine Volontés. The history of their relationship is placed in a tragic event - the death of their mother - Monique Volontés. Although the history might seem to be only a traumatic event at first, it causes a lot of amusement and it can surely be called humorous. We decided to present humour encountered in Breda's art in a general way, indicating numerous humorous measures of francophone society in Belgium, their black humour. It can be easily noticed that what may cause amusement and laughter, may also easily cause people burst into tears. Humour and pathos mix one with another. Similarly the fate of the two tragicomic characters of Breda's art, Hélène Volontés and Ludivine Volontés, tangle up with each other.
