Hemelse rechtspraak op Limburgse grond : enkele rechtsiconologische opmerkingen over ‘Tweevoudige gerechtigheid’ (Jan van Brussel)

This article elaborates on some iconographical and iconological aspects of the late fifteenth century panel painting 'Dual Justice' by local painter Jan van Brussel, today still in the Town Hall of Maastricht (The Netherlands). The painting was commissioned by a central jurisdiction council installed by burgundian duke Charles the Bold. The painting, already commentated by Vanessa Paumen for the catalogues of both the Bruges 'The Art of Law' and the Malines 'Call for Justice' exhibitions, represents both the Last Judgment (upper part) and a session of a court (lower part); both the devil and an angel try to influence the court members. The article investigates which court might be represented and what the particular roles of the several court members is. It also explains why the angel is probably the archangel Michael
