Summary of low-speed longitudinal aerodynamics of two powered close-coupled wing-canard fighter configurations
Investigations of the low speed longitudinal characteristics of two powered close coupled wing-canard fighter configurations are discussed. Data obtained at angles of attack from -2 deg to 42 deg, Mach numbers from 0.12 to 0.20, nozzle and flap deflections from 0 deg to 40 deg, and thrust coefficients from 0 to 2.0, to represent both high angle of attack subsonic maneuvering characteristics and conventional takeoff and landing characteristics are examined. Data obtained with the nozzles deflected either 60 deg or 90 deg and the flaps deflected 60 deg to represent vertical or short takeoff and landing characteristics are discussed
Low-speed power effects on advanced fighter configurations with two-dimensional deflected thrust
Wind-tunnel studies at the Langley Research Center have shown that significant increases in maximum lift coefficient and stability and decreases in drag due to lift are obtained when two-dimensional vectored thrust is used in conjuction with a close-coupled canard. The configuration tested was somewhat above the theoretical minimum drag due to lift because of the sharp leading edge on the biconvex airfoil used on the wing and canard. An effort to design a new configuration which will approach the minimum drag due to lift while maintaining high-lift configurations was completed. The resulting model will incorporate a realistic planform, airfoil section, and twist for a transonic maneuvering configuration
Effects of deflected thrust on the longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of a close-coupled wing-canard configuration
The effects of power on the longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of a close-coupled wing-canard fighter configuration with partial-span rectangular nozzles at the trailing edge of the wing were investigated. Data were obtained on a basic wing-strake configuration for nozzle and flap deflections from 0 deg to 30 deg and for nominal thrust coefficients from 0 to 0.30. The model was tested over an angle-of-attack range from -2 deg to 40 deg at Mach numbers of 0.15 and 0.18. Results show substantial improvements in lift-curve slope, in maximum lift, and in drag-due-to-lift efficiency when the canard and strakes have been added to the basic wing-fuselage (wing-alone) configuration. Addition of power increased both lift-curve slope and maximum lift, improved longitudinal stability, and reduced drag due to lift on both the wing-canard and wing-canard-strake configurations. These beneficial effects are primarily derived from boundary-layer control due to moderate thrust coefficients which delay flow separation on the nozzle and inboard portion of the wing flaps
Premise Selection and External Provers for HOL4
Learning-assisted automated reasoning has recently gained popularity among
the users of Isabelle/HOL, HOL Light, and Mizar. In this paper, we present an
add-on to the HOL4 proof assistant and an adaptation of the HOLyHammer system
that provides machine learning-based premise selection and automated reasoning
also for HOL4. We efficiently record the HOL4 dependencies and extract features
from the theorem statements, which form a basis for premise selection.
HOLyHammer transforms the HOL4 statements in the various TPTP-ATP proof
formats, which are then processed by the ATPs. We discuss the different
evaluation settings: ATPs, accessible lemmas, and premise numbers. We measure
the performance of HOLyHammer on the HOL4 standard library. The results are
combined accordingly and compared with the HOL Light experiments, showing a
comparably high quality of predictions. The system directly benefits HOL4 users
by automatically finding proofs dependencies that can be reconstructed by

Wind tunnel test results of a new leading edge flap design for highly swept wings, a vortex flap
A leading edge flap design for highly swept wings, called a vortex flap, was tested on an arrow wing model in a low speed wind tunnel. A vortex flap differs from a conventional plain flap in that it has a leading edge tab which is counterdeflected from the main portion of the flap. This results in intentional separation at the flap leading edge, causing a vortex to form and lie on the flap. By trapping this vortex, the vortex flap can result in significantly improved wing flow characteristics relative to conventional flaps at moderate to high angles of attack, as demonstrated by the flow visualization results of this tests

\u3cem\u3eDe Novo\u3c/em\u3e [PSI\u3csup\u3e+\u3c/sup\u3e] Prion Formation Involves Multiple Pathways to Form Infectious Oligomers
Prion and other neurodegenerative diseases are associated with misfolded protein assemblies called amyloid. Research has begun to uncover common mechanisms underlying transmission of amyloids, yet how amyloids form in vivo is still unclear. Here, we take advantage of the yeast prion, [PSI +], to uncover the early steps of amyloid formation in vivo. [PSI +] is the prion form of the Sup35 protein. While [PSI +] formation is quite rare, the prion can be greatly induced by overexpression of the prion domain of the Sup35 protein. This de novo induction of [PSI +] shows the appearance of fluorescent cytoplasmic rings when the prion domain is fused with GFP. Our current work shows that de novoinduction is more complex than previously thought. Using 4D live cell imaging, we observed that fluorescent structures are formed by four different pathways to yield [PSI +] cells. Biochemical analysis of de novo induced cultures indicates that newly formed SDS resistant oligomers change in size over time and lysates made from de novo induced cultures are able to convert [psi −] cells to [PSI +] cells. Taken together, our findings suggest that newly formed prion oligomers are infectious

A security proof of continuous-variable QKD using three coherent states
We introduce a ternary quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol and asymptotic
security proof based on three coherent states and homodyne detection. Previous
work had considered the binary case of two coherent states and here we
nontrivially extend this to three. Our motivation is to leverage the practical
benefits of both discrete and continuous (Gaussian) encoding schemes creating a
best-of-both-worlds approach; namely, the postprocessing of discrete encodings
and the hardware benefits of continuous ones. We present a thorough and
detailed security proof in the limit of infinite signal states which allows us
to lower bound the secret key rate. We calculate this is in the context of
collective eavesdropping attacks and reverse reconciliation postprocessing.
Finally, we compare the ternary coherent state protocol to other well-known QKD
schemes (and fundamental repeaterless limits) in terms of secret key rates and

Southwestern Minnesota Farm Business Management Association 2008 Annual Report
Average net farm income was 242,267 in 2007 (Figure 1). 2008 ended a steady trend of increasing year-to-year incomes for these farms from 2001 to 2007. Crop farms, with historically high corn and soybean prices, remained very profitable. However, specialized hog farms, which had been very profitable for the past four years, experienced substantial losses. Highlights of association financial results for 2008: Median net farm income was 449,997 while the least profitable lost 115,999. The average debt-to-asset ratio improved slightly to 39%, down from 40% (Figure 4). • Corn yields were up but soybean yields were down. Corn averaged 172 bushels per acre compared to 162 in 2007. Soybeans yields decreased to 44 bushels from 49 in 2007 (Figure 5). • Both corn and soybean prices received increased by over 50% to 10.83 for soybeans. • The cost to raise an acre of corn (with land rent) increased by 23% while soybean costs increased by 21%. The cost to produce a bushel of corn on cash rented land increased from 2.90 in 2008, while soybean costs per bushel increased from 7.21. • The average specialized hog operation (those with 70% of sales from hogs or pigs) lost over 1,000,000, were the least profitable based on rate of return on assets. This group earned an average ROA of 7% compared to 14% for farms that grossed between 1,000,000. • With exceptionally high feed prices, no hog or beef enterprise, with the exception of contract growing of hogs (where the contractor provided the feed) covered even direct costs of production.
