Exploring the Blinking Dynamics of Eosin Y Photosensitizers for Dye-Sensitized Photocatalysis Using Single-Molecule Spectroscopy

Dye-sensitized photocatalysis (DSP) is a promising way to harvest solar energy for carbon-neutral fuel production, but a better understanding of how and why it is currently inefficient is necessary. This thesis will delve into the complex excited-state dynamics of Eosin Y (EY), a sensitizer for DSP, on glass substrates. By using single-molecule spectroscopy (SMS) to understand the underlying photophysics at play, we can gain a more complete understanding of the various photophysical events that contribute to inefficient DSP. In particular, SM blinking dynamics give insight into kinetic models. SM blinking measurements of EY molecules in air and in N2 were separated into on- and off-time distributions and fit to heavy-tailed functions using the robust combined Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) and Kolmogorov Statistic (KS) method. Both on-time distributions in air and N2 are power law distributed after an onset time. The off time distribution in air is best fit to a lognormal function, consistent with the Albery model for dispersive electron transfer. The off time distribution for N2, however, contained contributions from both an exponential and lognormal function with an onset time, consistent with a model where both intersystem crossing and dispersive electron transfer occur. The off-time distribution of an individual molecule was lognormally distributed, consistent with dispersive ET kinetics. Additionally, blinking dynamics were investigated as a function of laser excitation power, revealing a power-dependence in the on times of individual EY molecules. Furthermore, preliminary studies of EY on TiO2 exhibit significant visual differences from blinking dynamics on glass. In future studies, the blinking dynamics and kinetics of EY on TiO2 will be explored in order to gain a more complete understanding of ET in technologically relevant conditions for the design and development of next-generation DSP solar cells

Onondaga Community College’s Coulter Library, in partnership with the Online Learning Office, created a customized library tab and specialized nursing nugget for ANGEL courses during the spring 2007 semester. The library also piloted an online reference appointment feature that is available via the customized library tab. This session will provide an overview of how these features were created and implemented

Supported housing in Global Austerity: Local Providers Fears for the Future in Gloucestershire, England

Shelter is a key component of an individual’s well-being and as a consequence is an area of policy development that cuts across national policies including welfare, health and social. Supported housing is a sub-set of the wider category of social housing, offering support services intended to help people with a range of challenges live as independently as possible . This paper is based on case study research in an English county that has a diverse range of rural and urban contexts. The analysis draws on evidence gathered mainly from interviews with decision-makers representing the largest supported housing providers in the region across a range of specialisms and needs provision. The research demonstrates that supported housing professionals have a range of concerns for the future of supported housing provision. Respondents reported that reforms to welfare payments and funding of housing support is creating great concern for the organisations and the fracturing of services meant it was increasingly difficult to offer comprehensive coverage in the county. However, the housing professionals also discussed a range of innovative and entrepreneurial responses to these uncertainties. This paper concludes that on the one hand there is a real and pressing threat of increased residualisation within the sector and within services for these most vulnerable groups reduced in both their scope and coverage. While on the other hand, those organisations able to operate more flexibly, and who were communicating effectively with local authorities, felt they had the best chance to respond to uncertainty in the policy landscape

The Evolution of Successful Service-Learning Courses in the Computing Curriculum: From Infancy to innovation

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to relate the evolution of successful service-learning courses in a school of computer science and information systems spanning over a 20-year period. The authors share their experiences in developing technology-based service-learning courses for both majors and non-majors. Most recently, these courses have enabled undergraduate first-year students to be exposed to exciting technologies, such as robotics and mobile app development. The challenges, benefits, and lessons learned are discussed

    Gut dysbiosis in cystic fibrosis

In people with CF, intestinal exocrine malfunction, antibiotic usage [1] and swallowing of infected respiratory mucus [2] likely perturb the normal community of commensal bacteria in the gut. People with CF report various intestinal problems which may be alleviated by probiotic administration [3]. There is also evidence that probiotic bacteria can help people with CF fight respiratory infection [4,5]. However, CF-related gut dysbiosis has only recently been subjected to detailed investigation. Using DGGE and culture-based methods, Duytschaever and colleagues [6] showed that children with CF have a quantitatively and qualitatively different faecal microbiota from their healthy siblings
