A surrogate-based approach for post-genomic partner identification
BACKGROUND: Modern drug discovery is concerned with identification and validation of novel protein targets from among the 30,000 genes or more postulated to be present in the human genome. While protein-protein interactions may be central to many disease indications, it has been difficult to identify new chemical entities capable of regulating these interactions as either agonists or antagonists. RESULTS: In this paper, we show that peptide complements (or surrogates) derived from highly diverse random phage display libraries can be used for the identification of the expected natural biological partners for protein and non-protein targets. Our examples include surrogates isolated against both an extracellular secreted protein (TNFβ) and intracellular disease related mRNAs. In each case, surrogates binding to these targets were obtained and found to contain partner information embedded in their amino acid sequences. Furthermore, this information was able to identify the correct biological partners from large human genome databases by rapid and integrated computer based searches. CONCLUSIONS: Modified versions of these surrogates should provide agents capable of modifying the activity of these targets and enable one to study their involvement in specific biological processes as a means of target validation for downstream drug discovery
Political mobilisation by minorities in Britain: negative feedback of ‘race relations'?
This article uses a political opportunity approach to study the relationship of minority groups to the political community in Britain. The main argument is that the
British race relations approach established in the 1960s had an important effect that still shapes the patterns of political contention by different minority groups today. Original data on political claims-making by minorities demonstrate that British 'racialised' cultural pluralism has structured an inequality of opportunities for the two main groups, African-Caribbeans and Indian subcontinent minorities. African-Caribbeans mobilise along racial lines, use a strongly assimilative 'black' identity, conventional action forms, and target state institutions with demands for justice that are framed within the recognised framework of race relations. Conversely, a high proportion of the Indian subcontinent minority mobilisation is by Muslim groups, a non-assimilative religious identity. These are autonomously organised, but largely make public demands for extending the principle of racial equality to their non-racial group. Within the Indian subcontinent minorities, the relative absence of mobilisation by Indian, Sikh and Hindu minorities, who have achieved much better levels of socio-economic success than Pakistani and Bangladeshi Muslims, suggests that there is also a strong socioeconomic basis for shared experiences and grievances as Muslims in Britain. This relativises the notion that Muslim mobilisation is Britain is purely an expression of the right for cultural difference per se, and sees it as a product of the paradoxes of British race relations
Ferromagnetic behavior of ultrathin manganese nanosheets
Ferromagnetic behaviour has been observed experimentally for the first time
in nanostructured Manganese. Ultrathin ( 0.6 nm) Manganese nanosheets
have been synthesized inside the two dimensional channels of sol-gel derived
Na-4 mica. The magnetic properties of the confined system are measured within
2K-300K temperature range. The confined structure is found to show a
ferromagnetic behaviour with a nonzero coercivity value. The coercivity value
remains positive throughout the entire temperature range of measurement. The
experimental variation of susceptibility as a function of temperature has been
satisfactorily explained on the basis of a two dimensional system with a
Heisenberg Hamiltonian involving direct exchange interaction.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figure

FIRST – “virtual Factories: Interoperation suppoRting buSiness innovation”, is a European H2020 project, founded by the RESEARCH AND INNOVATION STAFF EXCHANGE (RISE) Work Programme as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions. The project concerns with Manufacturing 2.0 and aims at providing the new technology and methodology to describe manufacturing assets; to compose and integrate the existing services into collaborative virtual manufacturing processes; and to deal with evolution of changes. This Chapter provides an overview of the state of the art for the research topics related to the project research objectives, and then it presents the progresses the project achieved up to now towards the implementation of the proposed innovations

Disordered microbial communities in asthmatic airways.
A rich microbial environment in infancy protects against asthma [1], [2] and infections precipitate asthma exacerbations [3]. We compared the airway microbiota at three levels in adult patients with asthma, the related condition of COPD, and controls. We also studied bronchial lavage from asthmatic children and controls.We identified 5,054 16S rRNA bacterial sequences from 43 subjects, detecting >70% of species present. The bronchial tree was not sterile, and contained a mean of 2,000 bacterial genomes per cm(2) surface sampled. Pathogenic Proteobacteria, particularly Haemophilus spp., were much more frequent in bronchi of adult asthmatics or patients with COPD than controls. We found similar highly significant increases in Proteobacteria in asthmatic children. Conversely, Bacteroidetes, particularly Prevotella spp., were more frequent in controls than adult or child asthmatics or COPD patients.The results show the bronchial tree to contain a characteristic microbiota, and suggest that this microbiota is disturbed in asthmatic airways
Application of anthocyanins from blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum L.) fruit waste as renewable hair dyes
There is much concern about the toxicological effects of synthetic hair dyes. As an alternative approach, renewable waste blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum L.) fruit skins from the fruit pressing industry were extracted using acidified water with a solid-phase purification stage. Anthocyanins colorants were isolated in good yields (2-3% w/w) and characterized by HPLC. Sorption of anthocyanins onto hair followed a Freundlich isotherm; anthocyanin-anthocyanin aggregation interactions enabling high build-up on the substrate. Sorption energy of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (monosaccharide) > cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside (disaccharide), but sorption properties of different anthocyanin glucosides were very similar. Intense blue-colored dyeings on hair could be achieved with λmax-vis at 580 nm, typical of the anionic quinonoid base – it is suggested that the hair provides an environment that enables the stabilization of the anionic quinonoid base on adsorption through association with cations in the hair and copigmentation effects. and forces at masses beneath the weak-scale, the status of this broad
international field, the important milestones motivating future exploration,
and promising experimental opportunities to reach these milestones over the
