Herschel Measurements of Molecular Oxygen in Orion

    Get PDF
We report observations of three rotational transitions of molecular oxygen (O_2) in emission from the H_2 Peak 1 position of vibrationally excited molecular hydrogen in Orion. We observed the 487 GHz, 774 GHz, and 1121 GHz lines using the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far Infrared on the Herschel Space Observatory, having velocities of 11 km s^(–1) to 12 km s^(–1) and widths of 3 km s^(–1). The beam-averaged column density is N(O_2) = 6.5 × 10^(16) cm^(–2), and assuming that the source has an equal beam-filling factor for all transitions (beam widths 44, 28, and 19"), the relative line intensities imply a kinetic temperature between 65 K and 120 K. The fractional abundance of O_2 relative to H_2 is (0.3-7.3) × 10^(–6). The unusual velocity suggests an association with a ~5" diameter source, denoted Peak A, the Western Clump, or MF4. The mass of this source is ~10 M_⊙ and the dust temperature is ≄150 K. Our preferred explanation of the enhanced O_2 abundance is that dust grains in this region are sufficiently warm (T ≄ 100 K) to desorb water ice and thus keep a significant fraction of elemental oxygen in the gas phase, with a significant fraction as O_2. For this small source, the line ratios require a temperature ≄180 K. The inferred O_2 column density ≃5 × 10^(18) cm^(–2) can be produced in Peak A, having N(H_2) ≃4 × 10^(24) cm^(–2). An alternative mechanism is a low-velocity (10-15 km s^(–1)) C-shock, which can produce N(O_2) up to 10^(17) cm^(–2)

Dust emission in the Sagittarius B2 molecular cloud core

    Get PDF
A model is presented for the dust emission from the Sagittarius B2 molecular cloud core which reproduces the observed spectrum between 30 and 1300 micron, as well as the distribution of the emission at 1300 micron. The model is based on the assumption that Sgr B2(N) continuum source is located behind the dust cloud associated with Sgr B2(M) continuum source. The fact that Sgr B2(N) is stronger at 1300 micron can be attributed to a local column density maximum at the position of this source. Absence of a 53 micron emission peak at the position of Sgr B2(N) suggests that the luminosity of the north source is lower than that of the middle source

Compensation for Natural Resource Injury: An Emerging Federal Framework

    Get PDF
This paper provides an overview of the emerging "Superfund" natural resource damage assessment and compensation framework and a review of several economic and legal issues that are likely to affect the ability of the framework to achieve its objectives. The Superfund Act as amended establishes a federal regulatory structure that provides a legal "legitimization" for the use of economic-based nonmarket valuation techniques in judicial proceedings involving natural resource injuries resulting from oil and hazardous waste spills and releases. While the regulations have the potential to foster more appropriate compensation as well as prospective incentives to limit damages to natural resources, several controversial elements, definitions, and assumptions built into the damage assessment regulations appear to have the potential to undermine the efficiency and equity of damage assessments. These issues reflect the difficulty of integrating economic concepts of natural resource value and their estimation into the legal environment.Environmental Economics and Policy, Political Economy, Public Economics, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

Rayleigh-Benard Convection with a Radial Ramp in Plate Separation

    Get PDF
Pattern formation in Rayleigh-Benard convection in a large-aspect-ratio cylinder with a radial ramp in the plate separation is studied analytically and numerically by performing numerical simulations of the Boussinesq equations. A horizontal mean flow and a vertical large scale counterflow are quantified and used to understand the pattern wavenumber. Our results suggest that the mean flow, generated by amplitude gradients, plays an important role in the roll compression observed as the control parameter is increased. Near threshold the mean flow has a quadrupole dependence with a single vortex in each quadrant while away from threshold the mean flow exhibits an octupole dependence with a counter-rotating pair of vortices in each quadrant. This is confirmed analytically using the amplitude equation and Cross-Newell mean flow equation. By performing numerical experiments the large scale counterflow is also found to aid in the roll compression away from threshold but to a much lesser degree. Our results yield an understanding of the pattern wavenumbers observed in experiment away from threshold and suggest that near threshold the mean flow and large scale counterflow are not responsible for the observed shift to smaller than critical wavenumbers.Comment: 10 pages, 13 figure

Short Note on the Unemployment Rate of the French Overseas Regions

    Get PDF
This article analyzes the hysteresis hypothesis in the unemployment rates of the four French overseas regions (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyana, Reunion) [FORs] over the period 1993-2008. We use standard univariate and panel unit root tests, among them Choi (2006) and Lopez (2009) that account for cross-sectional dependence and have improved performance when the number of countries and the time dimension of the data are limited. Our results cannot reject the null hypothesis of a unit root and so find evidence supporting hysteresis in the unemployment rates for the FORs.panel unit root, unemployment, hysteresis.

Analysis of X-ray spectra emitted from laser-produced plasmas of uranium

In this paper, we used the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method to generate theoretical X-ray spectra for Co-, Ni-, Cu-, Zn-, Ga-, Ge-, As-, Se-, Br-, Kr-, and Rb-like uranium ions. Using the distribution of these ions in a laser-produced plasma, for different plasma temperatures, we generate theoretical spectra, which are compared to experimental data

Relativistic correlation correction to the binding energies of the ground configuration of Beryllium-like, Neon-like, Magnesium-like and Argon-like ions

    Get PDF
Total electronic correlation correction to the binding energies of the isoelectronic series of Beryllium, Neon, Magnesium and Argon, are calculated in the framework of relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method. Convergence of the correlation energies is studied as the active set of orbitals is increased. The Breit interaction is treated fully self-consistently. The final results can be used in the accurately determination of atomic masses from highly charged ions data obtained in Penning-trap experiments.Comment: version soumise 3/08/200

Anisotropy Reversal of the Upper Critical Field at Low Temperatures and Spin-Locked Superconductivity in K2Cr3As3

    Get PDF
We report the first measurements of the anisotropic upper critical field Hc2(T)H_{c2}(T) for K2_{2}Cr3_{3}As3_{3} single crystals up to 60 T and T>0.6T > 0.6 K. Our results show that the upper critical field parallel to the Cr chains, Hc2∄(T)H_{c2}^\parallel (T), exhibits a paramagnetically-limited behavior, whereas the shape of the Hc2⊄(T)H_{c2}^\perp (T) curve (perpendicular to the Cr chains) has no evidence of paramagnetic effects. As a result, the curves Hc2⊄(T)H_{c2}^\perp (T) and Hc2∄(T)H_{c2}^\parallel(T) cross at T≈4T\approx 4 K, so that the anisotropy parameter ÎłH(T)=Hc2⊄/Hc2∄(T)\gamma_H(T)=H_{c2}^\perp/H_{c2}^\parallel (T) increases from ÎłH(Tc)≈0.35\gamma_H(T_c)\approx 0.35 near TcT_c to ÎłH(0)≈1.7\gamma_H(0)\approx 1.7 at 0.6 K. This behavior of Hc2∄(T)H_{c2}^\|(T) is inconsistent with triplet superconductivity but suggests a form of singlet superconductivity with the electron spins locked onto the direction of Cr chains
