Shear Flows of Rapidly Flowing Granular Materials

    Get PDF
Shear flows of granular materials are studied in an open channel. The wall shear is calculated from an open channel momentum equation which includes the density variations in the flow. An experimental technique was developed that allowed the measurement of the average density of the flow at different longitudinal locations in the channel. Two sizes of glass beads are examined and results show the variations in the wall shear as a function of various dimensionless parameters

Exploring the participation of children with Down Syndrome in Handwriting Without Tears®

Background Children with Down Syndrome typically experience difficulties with attention to task and lack motivation when learning to write. This article provides an evaluation of the HWT® method applied as an intervention to promote handwriting amongst children with Down Syndrome attending mainstream school in The Republic of Ireland. Methods In the absence of standardised measures, a purpose-designed group task participation scale and pre- and post-intervention teacher/parent questionnaire were developed by the first author and used to investigate the participation of 40 children with Down Syndrome in HWT® activities. Results Positive changes in participation in HWT® activities were recorded in group data and in teacher/parent report. Conclusions Hands-on multisensory learning approaches such as HWT® may encourage children with Down Syndrome to participate in activities that promote handwriting skills. Further research and the development of robust measures to evaluate handwriting intervention for this population of children is require

Writing readiness and children with Down Syndrome in an Irish context

    Get PDF
There is a dearth of studies investigating writing readiness in children with Down Syndrome (DS) and limited information on appropriate interventions. This article reports on a study conducted in the Republic of Ireland. An uncontrolled pretest-posttest design was implemented using writing readiness measures specifically adapted/developed from the literature to collect data on the writing readiness skills of 28 school-aged children with DS attending mainstream schools in the Republic of Ireland. Teacher/parent perspectives were also gathered during focus groups. The children presented with complex needs in relation to posture, pencil grasp, copying basic shapes, name/letter copying. Teacher and parent reports highlighted the need for collaborative intervention with occupational therapy. Findings from the study supports the need for targeted early collaborative syndrome-specific intervention to support the development of writing readiness in children with DS as an important part of school readiness. Intervention should include adopting a broader emergent literacy approach, teacher education regarding writing readiness and parental involvement in intervention

Predicting Leader Survival: Evidence from Covert Action Case Study Analysis

    Get PDF
This research explores the unique relationship between covert action and leader survivability, in particular, how leadership styles and personality traits influence this relationship. The life of a ruler is ephemeral. For those who are lucky, their exit from office is through retirement or old age. For most, their tenure is short, often ending through violent means. The overthrow of rulers by their rivals is a common theme throughout world history, and the strategy remains a popular choice in contemporary warfare. However, despite the frequency of regime change, very little is discussed in international relations about covert regime change and its effects on leader survival. The research methodology of fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) will be used to empirically test the hypothesis that the extent of a leader’s survivability following US covert action event, is influenced by his or her respective personality trait and leadership style. The dependent variable is survival—whether leaders live or die—and the independent variables are: leader characteristics, public dissent, global instability, internal conflict, and regime type. Case studies will focus on eight covert action events that were both successful and unsuccessful, which include: Iran, Guatemala, Indonesia, Dominican Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cuba, Republic of Vietnam, and Chile in order to answer the research question: to what extent, if any, can leader survival be predicted based on analyses of US-sanctioned covert action events during the Cold War era

Learning to Ride: Developing an Assistive Device for Two Wheel Bicycling

    Get PDF
Learning to ride a two wheel bicycle is an unforgettable milestone of childhood development. It highlights a moment where the anxiety of learning a complex physical activity is overcome and replaced with a sense of confidence and empowerment. Cycling also provides a foundation for social participation and connectivity to the surrounding community and environment. However, some children have abilities that make learning how to ride a bicycle a different kind of challenge. This thesis project sets out to bridge the gap between children with upper limb differences and the standard geometries and reach affordances of typical children\u27s two wheel bicycles. A need was identified for a universal bicycle attachment that could be easily adjusted and resized for an individual child, particularly a young girl with ulnar club hand. A solution was pursued that properly locates the control points allowing a child to learn the complex motor skills of cycling while promoting an optimal trunk and head posture. The resulting solution is an integrated kit of components, that is easy to install, intuitive to use, and can be tuned to specific user requirements. It enables and encourages cycling for children with limb differences. Additionally, the project questions the label of disability and argues that designing for one individual can result in an inclusive design that changes social perceptions surrounding accessibility
