Induced p-wave superfluidity in strongly interacting imbalanced Fermi gases
The induced interaction among the majority spin species, due to the presence
of the minority species, is computed for the case of a population-imbalanced
resonantly-interacting Fermi gas. It is shown that this interaction leads to an
instability, at low temperatures, of the recently observed polaron Fermi liquid
phase of strongly imbalanced Fermi gases to a p-wave superfluid state. We find
that the associated transition temperature, while quite small in the weakly
interacting BCS regime, is experimentally accessible in the strongly
interacting unitary regime.Comment: Published versio
Identifying Agile Requirements Engineering Patterns in Industry
Agile Software Development (ASD) is gaining in popularity in today´s business world. Industry is adopting agile methodologies both to accelerate value delivery and to enhance the ability to deal with changing requirements. However, ASD has a great impact on how Requirements Engineering (RE) is carried out in agile environments. The integration of Human-Centered Design (HCD) plays an important role due to the focus on user and stakeholder involvement. To this end, we aim to introduce agile RE patterns as main objective of this paper. On the one hand, we will describe our pattern mining process based on empirical research in literature and industry. On the other hand, we will discuss our results and provide two examples of agile RE patterns. In sum, the pattern mining process identifies 41 agile RE patterns. Cavity-enhanced room-temperature magnetometry using absorption by nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond
We demonstrate a cavity-enhanced room-temperature magnetic field sensor based
on nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. Magnetic resonance is detected using
absorption of light resonant with the 1042 nm spin-singlet transition. The
diamond is placed in an external optical cavity to enhance the absorption, and
significant absorption is observed even at room temperature. We demonstrate a
magnetic field sensitivity of 2.5 nT/sqrt(Hz), and project a photon
shot-noise-limited sensitivity of 70 pT/sqrt(Hz) for a few mW of infrared
light, and a quantum projection-noise-limited sensitivity of 250 fT/sqrt(Hz)
for the sensing volume of 90 um x 90 um 200 um.Comment: main text 5 pages, supplementary material 3 page
Stimulated Neutrino Transformation with Sinusoidal Density Profiles
Large amplitude oscillations between the states of a quantum system can be
stimulated by sinusoidal external potentials with frequencies that are similar
to the energy level splitting of the states or a fraction thereof. Situations
when the applied frequency is equal to an integer fraction of the energy level
splittings are known as parametric resonances. We investigate this effect for
neutrinos both analytically and numerically for the case of arbitrary numbers
of neutrino flavors. We look for environments where the effect may be observed
and find that supernova are the one realistic possibility due to the necessity
of both large densities and large amplitude fluctuations. The comparison of
numerical and analytic results of neutrino propagation through a model
supernova reveals it is possible to predict the locations and strengths of the
stimulated transitions that occur.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure
Motion-base simulator study of control of an externally blown flap STOL transport aircraft after failure of an outboard engine during landing approach
A moving-base simulator investigation of the problems of recovery and landing of a STOL aircraft after failure of an outboard engine during final approach was made. The approaches were made at 75 knots along a 6 deg glide slope. The engine was failed at low altitude and the option to go around was not allowed. The aircraft was simulated with each of three control systems, and it had four high-bypass-ratio fan-jet engines exhausting against large triple-slotted wing flaps to produce additional lift. A virtual-image out-the-window television display of a simulated STOL airport was operating during part of the investigation. Also, a simple heads-up flight director display superimposed on the airport landing scene was used by the pilots to make some of the recoveries following an engine failure. The results of the study indicated that the variation in visual cues and/or motion cues had little effect on the outcome of a recovery, but they did have some effect on the pilot's response and control patterns
Strongly enhanced photon collection from diamond defect centres under micro-fabricated integrated solid immersion lenses
The efficiency of collecting photons from optically active defect centres in
bulk diamond is greatly reduced by refraction and reflection at the diamond-air
interface. We report on the fabrication and measurement of a geometrical
solution to the problem; integrated solid immersion lenses (SILs) etched
directly into the surface of diamond. An increase of a factor of 10 was
observed in the saturated count-rate from a single negatively charged
nitrogen-vacancy (NV-) within a 5um diameter SIL compared with NV-s under a
planar surface in the same crystal. A factor of 3 reduction in background
emission was also observed due to the reduced excitation volume with a SIL
present. Such a system is potentially scalable and easily adaptable to other

Fixed base simulator study of an externally blown flap STOL transport airplane during approach and landing
A fixed-base simulator study was conducted to determine the flight characteristics of a representative STOL transport having a high wing and equipped with an external-flow jet flap in combination with four high-bypass-ratio fan-jet engines during the approach and landing. Real-time digital simulation techniques were used. The computer was programed with equations of motion for six degrees of freedom and the aerodynamic inputs were based on measured wind-tunnel data. A visual display of a STOL airport was provided for simulation of the flare and touchdown characteristics. The primary piloting task was an instrument approach to a breakout at a 200-ft ceiling with a visual landing
Analyzing the success of T-matrix diagrammatic theories in representing a modified Hubbard model
We present a systematic study of various forms of renormalization that can be
applied in the calculation of the self-energy of the Hubbard model within the
T-matrix approximation. We compare the exact solutions of the attractive and
repulsive Hubbard models, for linear chains of lengths up to eight sites, with
all possible taxonomies of the T-matrix approximation. For the attractive
Hubbard model, the success of a minimally self-consistent theory found earlier
in the atomic limit (Phys. Rev. B 71, 155111 (2005)) is not maintained for
finite clusters unless one is in the very strong correlation limit. For the
repulsive model, in the weak correlation limit at low electronic densities --
that is, where one would expect a self-consistent T-matrix theory to be
adequate -- we find the fully renormalized theory to be most successful. In our
studies we employ a modified Hubbard interaction that eliminates all Hartree
diagrams, an idea which was proposed earlier (Phys. Rev. B 63, 035104 (2000)).Comment: Includes modified discussion of 1st-order phase transition. Accepted

NCI-MATCH Arms N & P: Phase II study of PI3K beta inhibitor GSK2636771 in patients (pts) with cancers (ca) with PTEN mutation/deletion (mut/del) or PTEN protein loss
Background: The NCI-MATCH trial is the largest national study (1173 sites) for ptswith relapsed/ refractory solid tumors, lymphomas and myeloma, which assigns tar-geted therapies based on individual tumor molecular alterations detected using theadapted Oncomine AmpliSeq panel (143 genes) and immunohistochemistry (IHC).We hypothesized that patients with PTEN-deficient cancers enrolled to Arms N and Pmay benefit from treatment with the PI3K beta-selective inhibitor GSK2636771.
Methods: Eligibility: relapsed/refractory ca, good end-organ function, and ECOG PS ≤ 1. Pts were screened for molecular alterations by centralized testing on fresh tumor biopsy and had deleterious PTEN mut/del without loss of expression (Arm N) or complete loss of cytoplasmic and nuclear PTEN staining on IHC (Arm P), and no other aberrations activating the PI3K/MTOR and MAPK pathways (mut in PIK3CA, PIK3R1, BRAF, KRAS, AKT1, TSC1/2, mTOR, RHEB, NF2, NRAS, HRAS). Pts received GSK2636771 400mg/day (28-days cycles). RECIST 1.1 overall response rate (ORR) was the primary endpoint.
Results: Of 59 enrolled pts, 56 were eligible and received treatment. Of 22 pts with PTEN mut/del (Arm N: 6 uterine, 2 breast, 2 prostate, 2 head/neck ca, 10 other), all are off treatment as of analysis (14 disease progression, 4 for adverse events [AEs], 4 other). One pt (4.5%) with prostate ca (PTEN deletion, MPRSS2-ERG fusion) attained a partial response (-42%). Of 7 (32%) pts with stable disease (SD), 2 had SD \u3e 6 months (uterine leiomyosarcoma; endometrial carcinoma). Of 34 pts with loss of PTEN protein by IHC (Arm P: 7 prostate, 6 breast, 3 squamous anal ca, 2 cholangiocarcinoma, 16 other), all are off treatment as of analysis (26 disease progression, 4 for AE, 4 other). Of 9 (37.5%) pts with SD, 3 had SD \u3e 6 months (prostate cancer; squamous bladder cancer, squamous anal cancer). Median progression-free survival was 1.8 months for both arms. Gr ≥ 3 treatment-related (tr) reversible toxicities were experienced by 30% (7) and 20% (7) of pts in arms N and P, respectively. No tr Gr 5 toxicities were observed in either arm.
Conclusions: Single agent GSK2636771 has very modest activity in ca with PTEN gene mutation/deletion and/or PTEN protein loss
