    Implication of Diet and Nutrition for Growth and Prevalence of Anemia in Rural Preschool-Aged Children in Shandong Province, China

    A nutrition surveillance and nutritional improvement programme through nutrition field worker training, nutrition education and encouraging the utilization of home gardens was undertaken among rural preschool-aged children in the four counties of Linshu, Caoxin, Zoucheng and Yucheng in Shandong Province in China from 1990 to 1995. A baseline survey was conducted in 1990. This included physical and biochemical measurements being taken on 3474 children aged 0–5 years and dietary household surveys being taken on a random subsample of 312 children. The baseline survey showed that the average height and weight of the subjects was lower than the World Health Organization (WHO) standard with the prevalence of stunting, underweight and wasting being 24.2, 12.5 and 2.1%, respectively (using the Z score

    Pattern Formation in Mesic Savannas

    We analyze a spatially extended version of a well-known model of forest-savanna dynamics, which presents as a system of nonlinear partial integro-differential equations, and study necessary conditions for pattern-forming bifurcations. Homogeneous solutions dominate the dynamics of the standard forest-savanna model, regardless of the length scales of the various spatial processes considered. However, several different pattern-forming scenarios are possible upon including spatial resource limitation, such as competition for water, soil nutrients, or herbivory effects. Using numerical simulations and continuation, we study the nature of the resulting patterns as a function of system parameters and length scales, uncovering subcritical pattern-forming bifurcations and observing significant regions of multistability for realistic parameter regimes. Finally, we discuss our results in the context of extant savanna-forest modeling efforts and highlight ongoing challenges in building a unifying mathematical model for savannas across different rainfall levels

    Unifying deterministic and stochastic ecological dynamics via a landscape-flux approach

    We develop a landscape-flux framework to investigate observed frequency distributions of vegetation and the stability of these ecological systems under fluctuations. The frequency distributions can characterize the population-potential landscape related to the stability of ecological states. We illustrate the practical utility of this approach by analyzing a forest-savanna model. Savanna, and Forest states coexist under certain conditions, consistent with past theoretical work and empirical observations. However, a new Grassland state, unseen in the corresponding deterministic model, emerges as an alternative quasi-stable state under fluctuations, providing a novel theoretical basis for the appearance of widespread grasslands in some empirical analyses. The ecological dynamics are determined by both the population-potential landscape gradient and the steady-state probability flux. The flux quantifies the net input/output to the ecological system and therefore the degree of nonequilibriumness. Landscape and flux together determine the transitions between stable states characterized by dominant paths and switching rates. The intrinsic potential landscape admits a Lyapunov function, which provides a quantitative measure of global stability. We find that the average flux, entropy production rate, and free energy have significant changes near bifurcations under both finite and zero fluctuation. These may provide both dynamical and thermodynamic origins of the bifurcations. We identified the variances in observed frequency time traces, fluctuations and time irreversibility as kinematic measures for bifurcations. This new framework opens the way to characterize ecological systems globally, to uncover how they change among states, and to quantify the emergence of new quasi-stable states under stochastic fluctuations

    The Dynamic Integration of Content and Language during Bilingual Discussion of Mathematics Word Problems

    This study explores the discourse strategies adopted by a bilingual tutor to integrate content and second language learning, and support a student with limited English proficiency while discussing a set of word problems. Our findings reveal an integrated curriculum space wherein instructional focus oscillates between language and content. Pedagogical scaffolding was accomplished through strategic interspersing of pedagogical supports characterised by a linguistic focus (attention to words exchanged) or an epistemic focus (attention on mathematical ideas). Central to linguistically focused strategies was the deployment of oral translation techniques (literal translation, borrowing, modulation, and equivalence). By contrast, epistemically focused strategies entailed metaphorical gesticulation of abstract concepts in a more concrete spatialised form. It is argued that learning content in a second language requires more than vocabulary instruction at the beginning of content lessons. A more flexible approach is needed wherein English learners are provided with just-in-time support as new language naturally emerges

    Gestational weight gain in 4 low- and middle-income countries and associations with birth outcomes: A secondary analysis of the women first trial

    Background: Adequate gestational weight gain (GWG) is essential for healthy fetal growth. However, in low- and middle-income countries, where malnutrition is prevalent, little information is available about GWG and how it might be modified by nutritional status and interventions.Objective: We describe GWG and its associations with fetal growth and birth outcomes. We also examined the extent to which prepregnancy BMI, and preconception and early weight gain modify GWG, and its effects on fetal growth.Methods: This was a secondary analysis of the Women First Trial, including 2331 women within the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Guatemala, India, and Pakistan, evaluating weight gain from enrollment to ∼12 weeks of gestation and GWG velocity (kg/wk) between ∼12 and 32 weeks of gestation. Adequacy of GWG velocity was compared with 2009 Institute of Medicine recommendations, according to maternal BMI. Early weight gain (EWG), GWG velocity, and adequacy of GWG were related to birth outcomes using linear and Poisson models.Results: GWG velocity (mean ± SD) varied by site: 0.22 ± 0.15 kg/wk in DRC, 0.30 ± 0.23 in Pakistan, 0.31 ± 0.14 in Guatemala, and 0.39 ± 0.13 in India, (P Conclusions: These results underscore the importance of adequate maternal nutrition both before and during pregnancy as a potentially modifiable factor to improve fetal growth

    The triage of damaged proteins: degradation by the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway or repair by molecular chaperones

    Accumulation of damaged proteins is causally related to many age-related diseases. The ubiquitin-proteasome pathway (UPP) plays a role in selective degradation of damaged proteins, whereas molecular chaperones, such as heat shock proteins, are involved in refolding denatured proteins. This work demonstrates for the first time that the UPP and molecular chaperones work in a competitive manner and that the fates of denatured proteins are determined by the relative activities of the UPP and molecular chaperones. Enhanced UPP activity suppresses the refolding of denatured proteins whereas elevated chaperone activity inhibits the degradation of denatured proteins. CHIP, a co-chaperone with E3 activity, plays a pivotal role in determining the fates of the damaged proteins. The delicate balance between UPP-mediated degradation and refolding of denatured proteins is governed by relative levels of CHIP and other molecular chaperones. Isopeptidases, the enzymes that reverse the actions of CHIP, also play an important role in determining the fate of denatured proteins

    Skull shape and the demands of feeding: a biomechanical study of peccaries (Mammalia, Cetartiodactyla)

    A primary requirement of the mammalian skull is to exert forces on different foods and to resist the forces imposed on it during feeding. Skull shape patterns within and among mammals are generally well known, but the biomechanical relevance of this variation remains limited for some groups. By integrating geometric morphometric and biomechanical analyses, we test the hypothesis that skull shape in peccaries reflects biomechanical attributes to generate and dissipate powerful forces, presumably in response to tough foods. We obtained skull shape and size from 213 specimens of the three living peccary species and estimated bite force, bite stress at molars, bending and shear stress on the mandibular corpus, and condylar stress. We found larger estimated bite forces, greater resistance to bending loads, and lower stress emerging from the larger muscle attachment areas and shorter and deeper mandibular corpora for both Pecari tajacu and Tayassu pecari relative to Parachoerus wagneri. Peccaries (P. tajacu and T. pecari) with more powerful biomechanical attributes feed mainly on tougher foods (e.g., palm fruits). These results support the hypothesis that species eating tough foods tend to have a feeding morphology mechanically adapted to stronger bites and greater biting resistance, which must be closely reflected in their craniomandibular shape.Um requerimento primário do crânio de um mamífero é exercer forças em diferentes alimentos e resistir às forças impostas nele durante a alimentação. Os padrões de forma do crânio dentro e entre mamíferos são geralmente bem conhecidos, entretanto a relevância biomecânica desta variação permanece limitada a alguns grupos. Integrando análises de morfometria geométrica e de biomecânica nós testamos a hipótese de que a forma do crânio de tayassuídeos reflete atributos biomecânicos para gerar e dissipar forças de grande magnitude, tal como em resposta à alimentos duros. Nós obtivemos a forma e o tamanho do crânio de 213 espécimes das três espécies de tayassuídeos viventes e estimamos a força de mordida e o stress nos molares, no corpo mandibular e no côndilo. Nós encontramos maiores forças de mordida e de resistência e baixo stress emergindo de áreas mais amplas de inserção muscular e de corpos mandibulares mais curtos e altos de Pecari tajacu e Tayassu pecari em relação a Parachoerus wagneri. Tayassuídeos (P. tajacu and T. pecari) com atributos biomecânicos mais poderosos se alimentam principalmente de alimentos duros (por exemplo, frutos de palmeiras). Estes resultados suportam a hipótese de que espécies que se alimentam de alimentos duros tendem a apresentar uma morfologia do aparato alimentar mecanicamente adaptada a mordidas fortes e grande resistência de mordida, que deve estar intimamente associada as suas formas craniomandibulares.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse
