Morphotypes in Naked Amoebas (Protista): Distribution in Water Bodies of Zhytomyr and Volyn Polissia (Ukraine) and Possible Ecological Significance
Th e biotopic and seasonal
distributions of the naked amoeba species related to the specifi c morphotypes were analyzed on the territory
of Zhytomyr and Volyn Polissya. It was demonstrated that the polytactic and, to some extent, rugose
and branched morphotypes of naked amoebas have the adaptive signifi cance and could have emerged as
a result of adaptation to characteristic conditions of oligotrophic lakes. In turn, the formation of lanceolate
morphotype may be associated with the adaptation to low water temperatures, whereas the formation
of fl amellian morphotype may be an adaptation to high temperatures
New finds of naked amoebae
Findings of naked amoebae in various habitats of Ukraine and other territories are presented. Saccamoeba sp., Thecamoeba similis (Greeff, 1891) Lepşi, 1960, Vexillifera bacillipedes Page, 1969, Vannella lata Page, 1988, Acanthamoeba sp., Willaertia magna De Jonckheere, Dive, Pussard & Vickerman, 1984 were identified based on morphological data and molecular genetic research methods. All these species of amoebae are characterized according to our own observations and measurements and the published data. The amoebae we found belong to three classes (Tubulinea, Discosea, Heterolobosea), six orders (Euamoebida, Thecamoebida, Dactylopodida, Vannellida, Centramoebida, Schizopyrenida), six families (Hartmannellidae, Thecamoebidae, Vexilliferidae, Vannellidae, Acanthamoebidae, Vahlkampfiidae) and six genera (Saccamoeba, Thecamoeba, Vexillifera, Vannella, Acanthamoeba, Willaertia). W. magna was the least common in water bodies of different regions of Ukraine; Saccamoeba sp., V. bacillipedes in the studied water bodies are either uncommon species or occupy the middle position in terms of frequency of occurrence In the water bodies of Ukraine T. similis, V. lata, Acanthamoeba sp. are both the least common and the most common species, or occupy the middle position in terms of frequency of occurrence. The following ecological groups of naked amoebae have been identified in relation to temperature: eurythermal, psychrophilic stenothermal, thermophilic stenothermal. In relation to the concentration of dissolved oxygen in water: euryoxidic and stenooxidic. Three species of amoebae can withstand either a wide range of values of organic substances dissolved in water, or belong to stenobiont species. The recorded amoebae belong to monotactic (Saccamoeba sp.), striate (T. similis), dactylopodial (V. bacillipedes), fan-shaped (V. lata), acanthopodial (Acanthamoeba sp.) and eruptive (W. magna) morphotypes
The Taxonomical Composition of Naked Amoebas in the Lakes of Shatsk.
The information on the taxonomical composition of naked amoebas of lakes of Shatsk has been adduced at the first time in the article. 19 species of amoebas was identified resulting object-orientated investigation. Diversity and distribution of naked amoebae in water bodies of Sumy region (Ukraine)
Taxonomy of naked amoebae and specifi cs of their distribution
in water bodies of Sumy Region are presented. Our research identifi ed 12 species of naked amoebae of
11 morphotypes. We established their ecological groups relative to abiotic aquatic factors: euryoxidic,
stenooxidic, stenobiotic and those that survive in a wide range of organic matter content. According to
the species composition, swamp and riparian species complexes of naked amoebae were identifi ed. It was
found that species complexes of amoeba are infl uenced by such factors as temperature, concentration of
dissolved oxygen and organic compounds
Naked Amoebas of the Lakes of Shatsk
(Mayorella vespertilioides
Page, 1983, Mayorella penardi Page, 1972, Mayorella sp. (1)).
Rhizamoeba sp. (2).
The morphological notes and differential diagnoses of
6 naked amoeba species are given including the data on their locomotion and floating forms and also morphotype
analyses. According to the modern system of naked amoeba the two classes are presented in investigated region:
Tubulinea and Discosea; including three orders – Euamoebida, Leptomyxida and Dermamoebida and three families -
Hartmannellidae, Leptomyxidae and Mayorellidae. The highest species richness is characteristic for the family
Mayorellidae in the lakes (three species − Mayorella vespertilioides Page, 1983, Mayorella penardi Page, 1972 and
Mayorella sp. (1)). The two naked amoeba species − Saccamoeba wakulla Bovee, 1972 and Saccamoeba sp. (3) are
belong to the family Hartmannellidae whereas only one species (Rhizamoeba sp. (2) to the family Leptomyxidae. In
addition due to our data the naked amoeba species which observed in the Lakes of Shatsk are belong to the three
morphotypes: monotactic, branched and mayorellian.
