CP violation and mass hierarchy at medium baselines in the large theta(13) era
The large value of theta(13) recently measured by rector and accelerator
experiments opens unprecedented opportunities for precision oscillation
physics. In this paper, we reconsider the physics reach of medium baseline
superbeams. For theta(13) ~ 9 degree we show that facilities at medium
baselines -- i.e. L ~ O(1000 km) -- remain optimal for the study of CP
violation in the leptonic sector, although their ultimate precision strongly
depends on experimental systematics. This is demonstrated in particular for
facilities of practical interest in Europe: a CERN to Gran Sasso and CERN to
Phyasalmi nu_mu beam based on the present SPS and on new high power 50 GeV
proton driver. Due to the large value of theta(13), spectral information can be
employed at medium baselines to resolve the sign ambiguity and determine the
neutrino mass hierarchy. However, longer baselines, where matter effects
dominate the nu_mu->nu_e transition, can achieve much stronger sensitivity to
sign(Delta m^2) even at moderate exposures.Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, version to appear in EPJ
New calibrations and time stability of the response of the INTERCAST CR-39
We present new calibrations of different production batches (from 1989 to
1999) of the INTERCAST CR-39, using the BNL-AGS 1 A GeV iron beam. The
comparison with previous results, obtained with the 158 A GeV lead beam from
the CERN-SPS shows that, while each production batch has a different
calibration curve (mainly due to minor differences in the production
conditions), the aging effect is negligible. We also tested the dependence of
the CR-39 response from the time elapsed between exposure and analysis (fading
effect). The fading effect, if present, is less than 10%. It may be compatible

Bulk Etch Rate Measurements and Calibrations of Plastic Nuclear Track Detectors
New calibrations of CR39 and Makrofol nuclear track detectors have been
obtained using 158 A GeV Pb (82+) and In (49+) ions; a new method for the bulk
etch rate determination, using both cone height and base diameter measurements
was developed. The CR39 charge resolution based on the etch-pit base area
measurement is adequate to identify nuclear fragments in the interval 7 <=
Z/beta <= 49. For CR39 the detection threshold is at REL~50 MeV cm^2/g,
corresponding to a nuclear fragment with Z/beta~7. Base cone area distributions
for Makrofol foils exposed to Pb (82+) ions have shown for the first time all
peaks due to nuclear fragments with Z > 50; the distribution of the etched cone
heights shows well separated individual peaks for Z/beta = 78 - 83 (charge
pickup). The Makrofol detection threshold is at REL 2700 MeV cm^2/g,
corresponding to a nuclear fragment with Z/beta~50.Comment: 11 pages, 5 EPS figures. Submitted to Nucl. Instr. Meth.
Fragmentation studies of high energy ions using CR39 nuclear track detectors
We report on the measurements of the total charge changing fragmentation
cross sections in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions using Fe, Si and Pb
incident ions. Several stacks of CR39 nuclear track detectors with different
target combinations were exposed at normal incidence to high energy accelerator
beams to integrated densities of about 2000 ions/cm^2. The nuclear track
detector foils were chemically etched, and ion tracks were measured using an
automatic image analyzer system. The cross section determination is based on
the charge identification of beam ions and their fragments and on the

Fragmentation of very high energy heavy ions
A stack of CR39 (C12H18O7)n nuclear track detectors with a Cu target was
exposed to a 158 A GeV lead ion beam at the CERN-SPS, in order to study the
fragmentation properties of lead nuclei.
Measurements of the total, break-up and pick-up charge-changing cross
sections of ultrarelativistic Pb ions on Cu and CR39 targets are presented and

Time variations in the deep underground muon flux measured by MACRO
More than 30 million of high-energy muons collected with the MACRO detector
at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory have been used to search for flux
variations of different natures. Two kinds of studies were carried out: search
for periodic variations and for the occurrence of clusters of events. Different
analysis methods, including Lomb-Scargle spectral analysis and Scan Test
