The importance of collegiality and reciprocal learning in the professional development of beginning teachers
This paper discusses factors which enhance induction experiences for beginning teachers. It reports the findings from case studies which explore the impact of new entrants to the teaching profession in Scotland. The data suggest that the most supportive induction processes mix both formal and informal elements, but that the informal elements such as collegiality, good communication and a welcoming workplace environment should not be underestimated. The study also highlights the potential benefits of a more collegiate environment for teachers across the career phases. Experienced teachers and new entrants had a range of experience to offer each other, thus creating more cohesive professional working which was supportive of early career teachers while encouraging reflection on practice among the more experienced professionals
THE INFLUENCE OF THE THREAT OF FLOODING ON HOUSING VALUES IN FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA AND MOORHEAD, MINNESOTA
The hedonic valuation method (HVM) was used to quantify the impact of the threat of flooding on housing values in Fargo, North Dakota and Moorhead, Minnesota (Fargo-Moorhead). Prices of 3,783 Fargo-Moorhead homes sold between 1995 and 1998 were regressed against structural housing characteristics, neighborhood and environmental indicators, and three flood risk variables. Being located in the 100-year floodplain lowered the sale price of an average home by 10,241 less than similar homes located outside the floodplain and before the 1997 flood event. The aftermath of publicity of the 1997 flood was specifically responsible for average 100-year floodplain homes being reduced by an additional 3,100 more than similar homes not in the floodplain. It was concluded that homebuyers in Fargo-Moorhead place a value on flooding risk, that more disclosure is needed regarding the location of the 500-year floodplain, and that substantial housing value related benefits are likely to be generated by various flood mitigation projects in the area that result in a re-designation and reduction of the 100-year floodplain.Hedonic valuation method, flooding, floodplain, Fargo, Moorhead, Red River of the North, housing values, Community/Rural/Urban Development,
Parallel, iterative solution of sparse linear systems: Models and architectures
A model of a general class of asynchronous, iterative solution methods for linear systems is developed. In the model, the system is solved by creating several cooperating tasks that each compute a portion of the solution vector. A data transfer model predicting both the probability that data must be transferred between two tasks and the amount of data to be transferred is presented. This model is used to derive an execution time model for predicting parallel execution time and an optimal number of tasks given the dimension and sparsity of the coefficient matrix and the costs of computation, synchronization, and communication. The suitability of different parallel architectures for solving randomly sparse linear systems is discussed. Based on the complexity of task scheduling, one parallel architecture, based on a broadcast bus, is presented and analyzed
Triple point determinations of monomethylhydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide, 2.2 percent by weight nitric oxide
A series of tests was performed to ascertain the triple points of monomethylhydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide. A laboratory method indicated a triple point for monomethylhydrazine, but tests in a large vacuum chamber indicated that a triple point does not occur in spacelike conditions because the mono-methylhydrazine tends to supercool. Instead, an effective freezing point (with agitation) was obtained. New experimental values for liquid monomethylhydrazine vapor pressure were determined for temperatures from 275.2 to 207.6 K. The values were used to derive vapor pressure equations. Tentative values were obtained for the effective freezing point of nitrogen tetroxide spacelike conditions

Solving large, sparse, linear systems of equations is one of the fundamental problems in large scale scientific and engineering computation. A model of a general class of asynchronous, iterative solution methods for linear systems is developed. In the model, the system is solved by creating several cooperating tasks that each compute a portion of the solution vector. This model is then analyzed to determine the expected intertask data transfer and task computational complexity as functions of the number of tasks. Based on the analysis, recommendations for task partitioning are made. These recommendations are a function of the sparseness of the linear system, its structure (i.e., randomly sparse or banded), and dimension
Stencils and problem partitionings: Their influence on the performance of multiple processor systems
Given a discretization stencil, partitioning the problem domain is an important first step for the efficient solution of partial differential equations on multiple processor systems. Partitions are derived that minimize interprocessor communication when the number of processors is known a priori and each domain partition is assigned to a different processor. This partitioning technique uses the stencil structure to select appropriate partition shapes. For square problem domains, it is shown that non-standard partitions (e.g., hexagons) are frequently preferable to the standard square partitions for a variety of commonly used stencils. This investigation is concluded with a formalization of the relationship between partition shape, stencil structure, and architecture, allowing selection of optimal partitions for a variety of parallel systems
The school food environment and student body mass index and food consumption: 2004 to 2007 national data
PURPOSE: This study identifies trends in the availability of various food choices in United States' middle and high schools from 2004 to 2007, and examines the potential associations between such food availability and students' self-reported eating habits and body mass index (BMI)-related outcomes.
METHODS: Data are based on nationally representative samples of 78,442 students in 684 secondary schools surveyed from 2004 to 2007 as part of the Youth, Education, and Society (YES) study and the Monitoring the Future (MTF) study. In the YES study, school administrators and food service managers completed self-administered questionnaires on their school's food environment. In the MTF study, students in the same schools completed self-administered questionnaires, providing data used to construct BMI and food consumption measures.
RESULTS: Overall, there was a decrease in the availability of regular-sugar/fat food items in both middle and high schools, and some indication of an increase in high school availability of reduced-fat food items through school lunch or a la carte. Some minimal evidence was found for relationships between the school food environment and student BMI-related outcomes and food consumption measures.
CONCLUSIONS: United States secondary schools are making progress in the types of foods offered to students, with food items of lower nutritional value becoming less prevalent in recent years. Enhanced noise at high bias in atomic-scale Au break junctions
Heating in nanoscale systems driven out of equilibrium is of fundamental
importance, has ramifications for technological applications, and is a
challenge to characterize experimentally. Prior experiments using nanoscale
junctions have largely focused on heating of ionic degrees of freedom, while
heating of the electrons has been mostly neglected. We report measurements in
atomic-scale Au break junctions, in which the bias-driven component of the
current noise is used as a probe of the electronic distribution. At low biases
( 150~mV) the noise is consistent with expectations of shot noise at a fixed
electronic temperature. At higher biases, a nonlinear dependence of the noise
power is observed. We consider candidate mechanisms for this increase,
including flicker noise (due to ionic motion), heating of the bulk electrodes,
nonequilibrium electron-phonon effects, and local heating of the electronic
distribution impinging on the ballistic junction. We find that flicker noise
and bulk heating are quantitatively unlikely to explain the observations. We
discuss the implications of these observations for other nanoscale systems, and
experimental tests to distinguish vibrational and electron interaction
mechanisms for the enhanced noise.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figure
[N]pT ensemble and finite-size scaling study of the GEM-4 critical isostructural transition
First-order transitions of system where both lattice site occupancy and
lattice spacing fluctuate, such as cluster crystals, cannot be efficiently
studied by traditional simulation methods. These methods necessarily fix one of
these two degrees of freedom, but this difficulty is surmounted by the
generalized [N]pT ensemble [J. Chem. Phys. 136, 214106 (2012)]. Here it is
shown that histogram reweighting and the [N]pT ensemble can be used to study an
isostructural transition between cluster crystals of different occupancy in the
generalized exponential model of index 4 (GEM-4). Extending this scheme to
finite-size scaling studies also allows to accurately determine the critical
point parameters and to verify that it belongs to the Ising universality class.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
