    Multidimensional scaling with regional restrictions for facet theory: an application to Levy's political protest data

    "Multidimensional scaling (MDS) is often used for the analysis of correlation matrices of items generated by a facet-theory design. The emphasis of the analysis is on regional hypotheses on the location of the items in the MDS solution. An important regional hypothesis is the axial constraint, where the items from different levels of a facet are assumed to be located in different parallel slices. The simplest approach is to do an MDS and draw the parallel lines separating the slices as good as possible by hand. Alternatively, Borg & Shye (1995) proposed to automate the second step. Borg & Groenen (1997, 2005) proposed a simultaneous approach for ordered facets, when the number of MDS dimensions equals the number of facets. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm that estimates an MDS solution subject to axial constraints without the restriction that the number of facets equals the number of dimensions. The algorithm is based on constrained iterative majorization of De Leeuw & Heiser (1980) with special constraints. This algorithm is applied to Levy's (1983) data on political protests."     Muscle Oxygen Demands of the Vastus Lateralis in Back and Front Squats

    International Journal of Exercise Science 13(6): 734-743, 2020. In resistance training squats are often used to strengthen the muscles of the lower extremities and core muscles. There are two common forms of squats that use a barbell for loading, the back squat and the front squat. The technique and loading of each squat differ markedly. However, the energetic demands on the muscle between the two forms are not well understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in energy demands between front and back squats by measuring the change in skeletal muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2) through the use of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Methods: Eleven resistance trained individuals, (5 female, 6 male) with an average age of 23.7 ± 1.4, completed 3 sets of 15 repetitions at 70% of their 1-RM weight for both back and front squats. Skeletal muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2) of the vastus lateralis was measured using a wireless NIRS device. Results: The ΔSmO2 was not significantly different between back and front squats but was different between sets 1-3 (44.76 ± 3.24% vs. 55.19 ± 2.75% vs. 56.30 ± 2.63%), main effect p ≀ 0.0001 . The recovery of SmO2 was significantly different between back (42.5 ± 3.4 sec) and front squats (30.9 ± 2.8 sec), main effect p ≀ 0.05. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that the energetic demands placed on the vastus lateralis during both front and back squats are similar with a slower recovery of energetics in the back squat

    Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay and CP Violation

    We study the relation between the Majorana neutrino mass matrices and the neutrinoless double beta decay when CP is not conserved. We give an explicit form of the decay rate in terms of a rephasing invariant quantity and demonstrate that in the presence of CP violation it is impossible to have vanishing neutrinoless double beta decay in the case of two neutrino generations (or when the third generation leptons do not mix with other leptons and hence decouple).Comment: 9 pages, UTPT-93-1

    Benzo-fused Lactams from a Diversity-oriented Synthesis (DOS) Library as Inhibitors of Scavenger Receptor BI (SR-BI)-mediated Lipid Uptake

    We report a new series of 8-membered benzo-fused lactams that inhibit cellular lipid uptake from HDL particles mediated by Scavenger Receptor, Class B, Type I (SR-BI). The series was identified via a high-throughput screen of the National Institutes of Health Molecular Libraries Small Molecule Repository (NIH MLSMR), measuring the transfer of the fluorescent lipid DiI from HDL particles to CHO cells overexpressing SR-BI. The series is part of a previously reported diversity-oriented synthesis (DOS) library prepared via a build-couple-pair approach. Detailed structure–activity relationship (SAR) studies were performed with a selection of the original library, as well as additional analogs prepared via solution phase synthesis. These studies demonstrate that the orientation of the substituents on the aliphatic ring have a critical effect on activity. Additionally, a lipophilic group is required at the western end of the molecule, and a northern hydroxyl group and a southern sulfonamide substituent also proved to be optimal. Compound 2p was found to possess a superior combination of potency (av IC50 = 0.10 ÎŒM) and solubility (79 ÎŒM in PBS), and it was designated as probe ML312

    Discovery of Bisamide-heterocycles as Inhibitors of Scavenger Receptor BI (SR-BI)-mediated Lipid Uptake

    A new series of potent inhibitors of cellular lipid uptake from HDL particles mediated by scavenger receptor, class B, type I (SR-BI) was identified. The series was identified via a high-throughput screen of the National Institutes of Health Molecular Libraries Small Molecule Repository (NIH MLSMR) that measured the transfer of the fluorescent lipid DiI from HDL particles to CHO cells overexpressing SR-BI. The series is characterized by a linear peptidomimetic scaffold with two adjacent amide groups, as well as an aryl-substituted heterocycle. Analogs of the initial hit were rapidly prepared via Ugi 4-component reaction, and select enantiopure compounds were prepared via a stepwise sequence. Structure–activity relationship (SAR) studies suggest an oxygenated arene is preferred at the western end of the molecule, as well as highly lipophilic substituents on the central and eastern nitrogens. Compound 5e, with (R)-stereochemistry at the central carbon, was designated as probe ML279. Mechanistic studies indicate that ML279 stabilizes the interaction of HDL particles with SR-BI, and its effect is reversible. It shows good potency (IC50 = 17 nM), is non-toxic, plasma stable, and has improved solubility over our alternative probe ML278

    Do Group and Organizational Identification Help or Hurt Intergroup Strategic Consensus?

    Implementing strategy demands an organizationwide effort, where teams should not operate in isolation. A challenge many organizations face in implementing their strategy is eradicating silo thinking and creating shared understanding of strategy between interdependent teams—that is, intergroup strategic consensus. However, strategy process research is silent on how such intergroup strategic consensus can emerge. Drawing on social identity theory, we offer a lens to understand what influences the degree of intergroup strategic consensus. We unveil a tension between organizational and group identification such that organizational identification enhances intergroup strategic consensus, whereas group identification reduces it. Moreover, we hypothesize that high group identification crowds out positive effects of organizational identification on intergroup strategic consensus. Data from 451 intergroup relationships between 92 teams within a service organization support these hypotheses. We replicate our results using 191 intergroup relationships between 37 teams from another organization. These results allow us to develop an understanding of intergroup strategic consensus, expand the conversation in strategy process research to between-team interdependencies, and challenge the assumption in management literature and practice that higher identification is always desirable

    Endothelialization of Intravascular Stents

    Wide clinical application of intravascular stenting devices is currently limited by occlusion or intraluminal narrowing caused by thrombosis and neointimal thickening in a considerable percentage of implantations. We studied the possibility of seeding one of the currently availiable stents, a stainless steel, self‐expandable wire‐mesh, with endothelial cells in vitro. Endothelial cells, derived from human umbilical cord veins, could be successfully attached to stent filaments. In vivo stent implantations in porcine femoral arteries showed complete covering of stent wires by endothelium after 1 week. We conclude that coating of stents with autologous endothelial cells prior to implantation might protect against early thrombosis during the period in which a neointima is formed.
