    The Self-Reported Sexual Behaviors of Single Older African Americans

    Abstract African Americans are disproportionally affected by HIV/AIDS, but little is known about the risky sexual behaviors of older African Americans. This cross-sectional, comparative study, investigated the self-reported sexual behaviors of sexually active older African Americans. The nonrandom sample (N = 78) included single African American men (59%) and women (41%), 50-74 years of age. Participants were recruited from various community sites, and data were collected with a standard sexual history questionnaire. Participants reported practicing risky behaviors such having unprotected oral, anal, and vaginal sex (96.5%), and having multiple sex partners (37.2%). There were several significant gender differences such as males using condoms more for vaginal sexual activity, and they discussed using a condom more than females. Faced with an aging population and a growing incidence of HIV/AIDS, older adults need to know the types of sexual behaviors that put them at risk and skills to reduce risky behaviors. Age/gender-appropriate interventions for HIV prevention are needed for older African Americans

    Probing the folding pathway of a β-clam protein with single-tryptophan constructs

    Background: Cellular retinoic acid binding protein I (CRABPI) is a small, predominantly β-sheet protein with a simple architecture and no disulfides or cofactors. Folding of mutants containing only one of the three native tryptophans has been examined using stopped-flow fluorescence and circular dichroism at multiple wavelengths.Results: Within 10 ms, the tryptophan fluorescence of all three mutants shows a blue shift, and stopped-flow circular dichroism shows significant secondary structure content. The local environment of Trp7, a completely buried residue located near the intersection of the N and C termini, develops on a 100 ms time scale. Spectral signatures of the other two tryptophan residues (87 and 109) become native-like in a 1 s kinetic phase.Conclusions:Formation of the native β structure of CRABPI is initiated by rapid hydrophobic collapse, during which local segments of chain adopt significant secondary structure. Subsequently, transient yet specific interactions of amino acid residues restrict the arrangement of the chain topology and initiate long-range associations such as the docking of the N and C termini. The development of native tertiary environments, including the specific packing of the β-sheet sidechains, occurs in a final, highly cooperative step simultaneous with stable interstrand hydrogen bonding

Methods: The South Australian Health Omnibus is an annual, random, face-to-face, cross sectional survey conducted within the state. Having standardized data to the whole population, the study describes the subset of the population who identify that they actively cared for someone at the end of life with HF in the five years before survey administration

    DDO 88: A Galaxy-Sized Hole in the Interstellar Medium

    We present an HI and optical study of the gas-rich dwarf irregular galaxy DDO 88. Although DDO 88's global optical and HI parameters are normal for its morphological type, it hosts a large (3 kpc diameter) and unusually complete ring of enhanced HI emission. The gas ring is located at approximately one-third of the total HI radius and one-half the optically-defined Holmberg radius, and contains 30% of the total HI of the galaxy. The ring surrounds a central depression in the HI distribution, so it may be a shell formed by a starburst episode. However, the UBV colors in the HI hole are not bluer than the rest of the galaxy as would be expected if an unusual star-forming event had taken place there recently, but there is an old (~1-3 Gyr), red cluster near the center of the hole that is massive enough to have produced the hole in the HI. An age estimate for the ring, however, is uncertain because it is not observed to be expanding. An expansion model produces a lower estimate of 0.5 Gyr, but the presence of faint star formation regions associated with the ring indicate a much younger age. We also estimate that the ring could have dispersed by now if it is older than 0.5 Gyr. This implies that the ring is younger than 0.5 Gyr. A younger age would indicate that the red cluster did not produce the hole and ring. If this ring and the depression in the gas which it surrounds were not formed by stellar winds and supernovae, this would indicate that some other, currently unidentified, mechanism is operating.Comment: 44 pages; 16 figures.     Enhancing food security in an era of global climate change

    The goal of the workshop was to build a more strategic and integrated perspective on the threats and opportunities latent in the food / climate issue, and to discuss the hard challenges of moving forward toward common goals in a private, off-the-record setting. An executive session convened by the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and the Venice International University on June 6-9, 2010 attracted more than 25 of the world’s leading experts from the fields of policy, science, and business to San Servolo Island for an intensive three day session (see text for a list of the participants). The discussions were off-the-record, with each participant present in his or her own capacity, rather than representing an organization. The session was one in a series on Grand Challenges of the Sustainability Transition organized by the Sustainability Science Program at Harvard University with the generous support of the Italy’s Ministry for Environment, Land and Sea. This particular session was held in cooperation with the new Mega Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security being developed by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and the Earth System Science Partnership. This summary report of the session is our synthesis of the main points and arguments that emerged from the discussions. It does not represent a consensus document, since no effort was made at the Session to arrive at a single consensus view. Rather, we report here on what we heard to be the major themes discussed at the session. Any errors or misrepresentations remain solely our responsibility

    A predominance of R5-like HIV genotypes in vaginal secretions is associated with elevated plasma HIV-1 RNA levels and the absence of anti-retroviral therapy

    HIV expressed in genital secretions provides the inoculum from which transmitting variants are selected, both in sexual transmission and mother-to-infant transmission during partuition. Characterization of HIV levels and genotypes found in vaginal secretions and the impact of anti-retroviral therapy (ART) on this virus can provide valuable insight for the prevention of HIV transmission. Vaginal HIV was evaluated in a cohort of 43 women attending a New Orleans HIV outpatient clinic. Predominant vaginal genotypes were characterized as R5- or X4-like by heteroduplex tracking analyses of the envelope V3 region. Most women (67.4%) shed R5-like genotypes in vaginal secretions which was associated with elevated plasma HIV levels (≥ 10,000 copies HIV-RNA/mL) and absence of ART. Because R5-like genotypes are more frequently associated with transmission, these observations suggest that the majority of women shedding HIV in genital secretions present a transmission risk. The levels of vaginal virus were similar between both groups, but shedding of X4-like genotypes was associated with lower plasma viral loads and the use of ART, suggesting that ART use may impact the genotypes of virus found in the female genital compartment

    Ocean acidification with (de)eutrophication will alter future phytoplankton growth and succession

    Human activity causes ocean acidification (OA) though the dissolution of anthropogenically generated CO2 into seawater, and eutrophication through the addition of inorganic nutrients. Eutrophication increases the phytoplankton biomass that can be supported during a bloom, and the resultant uptake of dissolved inorganic carbon during photosynthesis increases water-column pH (bloom-induced basification). This increased pH can adversely affect plankton growth. With OA, basification commences at a lower pH. Using experimental analyses of the growth of three contrasting phytoplankton under different pH scenarios, coupled with mathematical models describing growth and death as functions of pH and nutrient status, we show how different conditions of pH modify the scope for competitive interactions between phytoplankton species. We then use the models previously configured against experimental data to explore how the commencement of bloom-induced basification at lower pH with OA, and operating against a background of changing patterns in nutrient loads, may modify phytoplankton growth and competition. We conclude that OA and changed nutrient supply into shelf seas with eutrophication or de-eutrophication (the latter owing to pollution control) has clear scope to alter phytoplankton succession, thus affecting future trophic dynamics and impacting both biogeochemical cycling and fisheries

    The Association Between Parent Engagement and Child Outcomes in Social Skills Training Programs: Discovering the Secret Agent Society in Partnership

    Previous research in clinical, community, and school settings has demonstrated positive outcomes for the Secret Agent Society (SAS) social skills training program. This is designed to help children on the autism spectrum become more aware of emotions in themselves and others and to ‘problem-solve’ complex social scenarios. Parents play a key role in the implementation of the SAS program, attending information and support sessions with other parents and providing supervision, rewards, and feedback as their children complete weekly ‘home mission’ assignments. Drawing on data from a school-based evaluation of the SAS program, this study examined whether parents’ engagement with these elements of the intervention was linked to the quality of their children’s participation and performance. Sixty-eight 8-14 year olds (mean age 10.7) with a diagnosis of autism participated in the program. The findings indicated that ratings of parental engagement were positively correlated with children’s competence in completing home missions and with the quality of their contribution during group teaching sessions. However, there was a less consistent relationship between parental engagement and measures of children’s social and emotional skill gains over the course of the program
