    Dynamics of conduction blocks in a model of paced cardiac tissue

    We study numerically the dynamics of conduction blocks using a detailed electrophysiological model. We find that this dynamics depends critically on the size of the paced region. Small pacing regions lead to stationary conduction blocks while larger pacing regions can lead to conduction blocks that travel periodically towards the pacing region. We show that this size-dependence dynamics can lead to a novel arrhythmogenic mechanism. Furthermore, we show that the essential phenomena can be captured in a much simpler coupled-map model.Comment: 8 pages 6 figure

    Near-infrared spectroscopy study of tourniquet-induced forearm ischaemia in patients with coronary artery disease

    Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR) can be employed to monitor local changes in haemodynamics and oxygenation of human tissues. A preliminary study has been performed in order to evaluate the NIRS transmittance response to induced forearm ischaemia in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). The population consists in 40 patients with cardiovascular risk factors and angiographically documented CAD, compared to a group of 13 normal subjects. By inflating and subsequently deflating a cuff placed around the patient arm, an ischaemia has been induced and released, and the patients have been observed until recovery of the basal conditions. A custom LAIRS spectrometer (IRIS) has been used to collect the backscattered light intensities from the patient forearm throughout the ischaemic and the recovery phase. The time dependence of the near-infrared transmittance on the control group is consistent with the available literature. On the contrary, the magnitude and dynamics of the NIRS signal on the CAD patients show deviations from the documented normal behavior, which can be tentatively attributed to abnormal vessel stiffness. These preliminary results, while validating the performance of the IRIS spectrometer, are strongly conducive towards the applicability of the NIRS technique to ischaemia analysis and to endothelial dysfunction characterization in CAD patients with cardiovascular risk factors.Publisher PD

In particular, we compare some common approximations done to treat pairing effects and we estimate the possible error. To reduce the computational cost of the calculations required to determine the chemical composition of the crust, we present a new numerical method based on Gaussian Emulator Process

    Lumpers vs. splitters: Intelligence in children with specific learning disorders

    A multigroup bifactor model was used to compare the explained variance and the reliability of the general vs. specific factors of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-4th edition (WISC-IV) in 1617 Italian children diagnosed with specific learning disorder (SLD) and an Italian normative sample of typically-developing children (with the exclusion of IQ < 70). Results suggested that more than half of the common variance, 56.1%, was accounted for by the domain-specific factors in SLD, against only 39.5% in typical development. The reliability of both general and specific factors was rather limited in SLD, whereas the reliability of the g-factor was good in typical development. An additional analysis using previous information from American data showed very similar results. Our results suggest that the role of the specific factors, of VCI and PSI in particular and WMI to a lesser extent, should be considered as probably largely distinct from the g-factor in children with SLD. Results also seem to indicate that the PRI is a less distinctive factor, which is, in the SLD group, hardly distinguishable from the g-factor. The use of Bayesian priors from American data indicated that results on Italian and American samples of children with SLD were similar, and different from those on the normative samples of both countries, suggesting remarkable cross-cultural and cross-linguistic similarity of the structure of intelligence in children with SLD

    Molecular characterization of officially registered Sangiovese clones and of other Sangiovese-like biotypes in Tuscany, Corsica and Emilia-Romagna

    The present study was designed (1) to identify and determine the origin of the genetic variability via SSR and AFLP within a group of 39 Sangiovese clones officially listed in the National Grapevine Registry, (2) to pinpoint varietal differences and potential family relations among 34 Sangiovese-like biotypes, via the SSR markers. Most biotypes are regarded as Sangiovese but sometimes are known under different names. In both studies the reference standard was the registered Sangiovese clone SG 12T.No polymorphism was found among the officially listed 39 clones analysed at 6 microsatellite loci. This enabled us to confirm their origin from a single mother plant, thereby supporting the view that any morphological or qualitative differences may be the result of propagation-related mutagenic events. A subsequent AFLP analysis of 26 of the 39 clones showed polymorphic bands in three of them (two identical) that may correspond to a mutagenic event. Assays with SSR markers on 34 Sangiovese-like biotypes collected in Tuscany, Corsica and Emilia-Romagna showed that 28 are identical with the reference Sangiovese clone SG 12T, while the remaining 6 (Sangiovese 1, Sangiovese 6, Morellino, Poverina, Sangiovese forte and Brunellone) are genetically different from SG 12T and among one another so that no direct family relations could be established

    Local chiral interactions and magnetic structure of few-nucleon systems

    The magnetic form factors of 2^2H, 3^3H, and 3^3He, deuteron photodisintegration cross sections at low energies, and deuteron threshold electrodisintegration cross sections at backward angles in a wide range of momentum transfers, are calculated with the chiral two-nucleon (and three-nucleon) interactions including Δ\Delta intermediate states that have recently been constructed in configuration space. The AA\,=\,3 wave functions are obtained from hyperspherical-harmonics solutions of the Schr\"odinger equation. The electromagnetic current includes one- and two-body terms, the latter induced by one- and two-pion exchange (OPE and TPE, respectively) mechanisms and contact interactions. The contributions associated with Δ\Delta intermediate states are only retained at the OPE level, and are neglected in TPE loop (tree-level) corrections to two-body (three-body) current operators. Expressions for these currents are derived and regularized in configuration space for consistency with the interactions. The low-energy constants that enter the contact few-nucleon systems. The predicted form factors and deuteron electrodisintegration cross section are in excellent agreement with experiment for momentum transfers up to 2--3 fm1^{-1}. However, the experimental values for the deuteron photodisintegration cross section are consistently underestimated by theory, unless use is made of the Siegert form of the electric dipole transition operator. A complete analysis of the results is provided, including the clarification of the origin of the aforementioned discrepancy.Comment: 24 pages, 13 figure

    Radiogenomics in clear cell renal cell carcinoma: correlations between advanced CT imaging (texture analysis) and microRNAs expression

    Purpose: A relevant challenge for the improvement of clear cell renal cell carcinoma management could derive from the identification of novel molecular biomarkers that could greatly improve the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment choice of these neoplasms. In this study, we investigate whether quantitative parameters obtained from computed tomography texture analysis may correlate with the expression of selected oncogenic microRNAs. Methods: In a retrospective single-center study, multiphasic computed tomography examination (with arterial, portal, and urographic phases) was performed on 20 patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma and computed tomography texture analysis parameters such as entropy, kurtosis, skewness, mean, and standard deviation of pixel distribution were measured using multiple filter settings. These quantitative data were correlated with the expression of selected microRNAs (miR-21-5p, miR-210-3p, miR-185-5p, miR-221-3p, miR-145-5p). Both the evaluations (microRNAs and computed tomography texture analysis) were performed on matched tumor and normal corticomedullar tissues of the same patients cohort. Results: In this pilot study, we evidenced that computed tomography texture analysis has robust parameters (eg, entropy, mean, standard deviation) to distinguish normal from pathological tissues. Moreover, a higher coefficient of determination between entropy and miR-21-5p expression was evidenced in tumor versus normal tissue. Interestingly, entropy and miR-21-5p show promising correlation in clear cell renal cell carcinoma opening to a radiogenomic strategy to improve clear cell renal cell carcinoma management. Conclusion: In this pilot study, a promising correlation between microRNAs and computed tomography texture analysis has been found in clear cell renal cell carcinoma. A clear cell renal cell carcinoma can benefit from noninvasive evaluation of texture parameters in adjunction to biopsy results. In particular, a promising correlation between entropy and miR-21-5p was found

    Genetic characterization of alpine sheep breeds

    The aim of this study was to characterize from the genetic point of view eight alpine sheep breeds reared in Italy (Bergamasca, Biellese, Schwarzbraunes Bergschaf and Tiroler Bergschaf), Germany (Brillenschaf and Weisses Bergschaf) and Slovenia (Bov\u161ka and Jezerzko-Sol\u10davska) through the use of microsatellite molecular markers. Allelic richness was rather high in each breed highlighting a considerable genetic diversity. However, the study evidenced a significant departure from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in all analyzed breeds caused by a heterozygote deficiency. Such lack seems to be caused by a rather high level of inbreeding. The genetic differentiation among breeds was rather low (F ST = 0.064) but significant. The neighbour-joining tree obtained from Reynolds\u2019 genetic distance estimates, showed the presence of three groups formed by the three Bergschaf breeds, the Italian Bergamasca and Biellese and the two Slovenian breeds together with the German Brillenschaf. Such grouping is in accordance with the breeds\u2019 region of origin and with their known history. Concluding, microsatellite resulted to be a useful tool to investigate breed variability and to characterize alpine sheep breeds. Obtained findings suggest the need to set up a conservation plan aiming to safeguard and increase the genetic variability of the studied breeds compromised by the high level of inbreeding. Microsatellites genotyping could help to monitor breed variability and to organize matings

    Are there localized saddles behind the heterogeneous dynamics of supercooled liquids?

    We numerically study the interplay between heterogeneous dynamics and properties of negatively curved regions of the potential energy surface in a model glassy system. We find that the unstable modes of saddles and quasi-saddles undergo a localization transition close to the Mode-Coupling critical temperature. We also find evidence of a positive spatial correlation between clusters of particles having large displacements in the unstable modes and dynamical heterogeneities.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Europhys.
