Using Interactive Whiteboards, Projectors and Tablet Computers in the Classroom: Facilitating Active learning and Promoting Student Review outside the Classroom

In fall 2014 our institution was awarded with the University Reform Acceleration Program (AP) grant from the Japanese Ministry of Education (MEXT), and starting in 2015 an electronic portfolio (e-Portfolio) system was put in place where theoretically speaking, students would be able to demonstrate their critical thinking skills and showcase their best academic works. In addition, to facilitate students’ access to the e-Portfolio system, all first year students were assigned tablet computers. This paper describes how recorded class explanations were provided to students through the e-portfolio system as well as some of the advantages of this process

Multi-Language Implementation Framework for Legacy and New Systems

Globalization is in the mind of business owners and managers all over the world. From small family-based companies in the suburb to big corporations, everyone knows that the world (for now) is the limit. For these people, using an IT system that speaks their language is something taken for granted. This paper presents a multi-language implementation framework that can be used in new as well as legacy systems. For new systems, it can be an integral part of the application’s backbone while for legacy systems it can be used as a totally independent translation system. We will go through some implementation aspects of our proposed framework without going too deep into technical details, allowing the reader to understand the concept without any technical background

An Initial Survey of Japanese Elementary School Students’ Reactions to Robots and Tablets in the Classroom

From 2020, elementary schools in Japan will be required to teach programming to their students. It is clear that Japanese publishers have already done their homework and published numerous materials to help elementary school teachers to fulfil Japanese government’s requirements. Nevertheless, it is still unclear how teachers can successfully teach programing concepts without proper training and materials, and also how receptive to new methods and tools elementary school students will be. This paper focuses on the later, on an initial attempt to teach programming concepts to elementary school students and evaluate their level of engagement while using tablet computers and robots. By conducting a small experiment, it is shown that students naturally engage with the content, but special care must be taken to keep students focused on the lesson objectives

Identidades não binárias: a escuta psicanalítica como meio para a subversão do binarismo

Binarism is understood as the dichotomous way of perceiving reality, which is increasingly inflexible, which helps in the emergence of binarisms that constitute social structures. Therefore, this study intends to approach the binary conceptions of gender, which permeate the current Brazilian society. In addition to cisgender people, there are also people of transgender gender identity and, within that group, non-binary transgender people. Gradually this community has conquered spaces and ruled that there are possibilities of identification beyond the woman/man dichotomy and their respective gender roles. This research aims to understand how psychoanalytic listening can be a tool for strengthening non-binary people in the face of a world immersed in cisnormativity and binarism, in order to contribute to its subversion. Thus, psychoanalysis cannot abstain from the dialogues that emerge in the social and political environment, as well as other aspects of Psychology. It is necessary to be active and sensitive in the face of non-cisgender ways of experiencing gender identities. With this, a narrative review of the literature was carried out from the SciELO databases and the Institutional Repositories of UFJF, UFBA and UFRGS; in addition to books and other references, such as audiovisual materials shown on YouTube. Finally, it is expected that reflections on ethical listening in psychoanalysis and on the naturalization of cisgenderism will be favored. The objective is also to provide visibility to the non-binary population, which is still excluded from spaces, in addition to being pathologized in the field of Health.Se entiende por binarismo la forma dicotómica de percibir la realidad, cada vez más inflexible, favoreciendo el surgimiento de binarismos que constituyen estructuras sociales. Ante esto, este estudio pretende abordar las concepciones binarias de género que permean la sociedad brasileña actual. Además de las personas cisgénero, también hay personas con identidades de género disidentes y, dentro de ese grupo, personas no binarias. Poco a poco esta comunidad ha conquistado espacios, afirmando que hay posibilidades de identificación más allá de la dicotomía mujer/hombre y sus respectivos roles de género. Esta investigación tiene como objetivo comprender cómo la escucha psicoanalítica puede ser una herramienta para el fortalecimiento de personas no binarias en un mundo inmerso en la cisnormatividad y el binarismo, con el fin de colaborar para su subversión. Así, el psicoanálisis no puede abstenerse de los diálogos que surgen en el ámbito social y político, así como otros aspectos de la Psicología. Es necesario ser sensible a las formas no cisgénero de vivir las identidades de género. Con eso, se realizó una revisión narrativa de la literatura con las bases de datos de SciELO y los Repositorios Institucionales de la UFJF, UFBA y UFRGS; además de libros y otras referencias, como materiales audiovisuales exhibidos en YouTube. Finalmente, se espera favorecer reflexiones sobre la escucha ética en psicoanálisis y sobre la naturalización del cisgenerismo. La población no binaria sigue excluida de los espacios, además de patologizada en el ámbito de la Salud. A pesar de ello, es posible ejercer una escucha que no viole estas existencias.Entende-se por binarismo a forma dicotômica de perceber a realidade, que se mostra cada vez mais inflexível, auxiliando no surgimento dos binarismos que constituem as estruturas sociais. Diante disso, este estudo pretende abordar as concepções binárias de gênero que permeiam a atual sociedade brasileira. Além de pessoas cisgêneras, existem também as pessoas de identidades de gênero dissidentes e, dentro desse grupo, as pessoas não binárias. Gradualmente essa comunidade tem conquistado espaços, pautando que há possibilidades de identificação além da dicotomia mulher/homem e seus respectivos papéis de gênero. Esta pesquisa almeja compreender como a escuta psicanalítica pode ser uma ferramenta para o fortalecimento de pessoas não binárias diante de um mundo imerso na cisnormatividade e no binarismo, de modo a colaborar para a subversão. Assim, a psicanálise não pode se abster dos diálogos que emergem no meio social e político, bem como as outras vertentes da psicologia. É necessário que esteja sensível diante das formas não cisgêneras de vivenciar as identidades de gênero. Com isso, foi realizada uma revisão narrativa da literatura com os bancos de dados da SciELO e dos Repositórios Institucionais da UFJF, UFBA e UFRGS; além de livros e outras referências, como materiais audiovisuais exibidos no YouTube. Por fim, é esperado que sejam favorecidas reflexões sobre a escuta ética na psicanálise e sobre a naturalização da cisgeneridade. A população não binária ainda é excluída dos espaços, além de ainda ser patologizada no campo da saúde. Apesar disso, é possível exercer uma escuta que não violente essas existências

Plastic in the Ocean: A Report on What It Is and a Short Survey on Miyazaki’s Seashore

Plastic in the ocean is an environmental issue that has been gaining attention in recent years. It not only affects marine habitats, but ingestion or entanglement can also kill marine life. The final destination of plastic waste is not yet known, but some researchers believe that such debris may be entering our food chain as plastic molecules are broken down and absorbed by marine life. In this study, we are going to discuss some of the effects that plastic in the ocean may have on marine environment and how it may be entering our food chain. Finally, we surveyed a local beach in order to verify the ratio of plastic within the litter found on the shore and found out that most of it was in fact plastic-related

EFEITOS DO TREINAMENTO RESISTIDO NA APTIDÃO AERÓBIA DE IDOSOS SAUDÁVEIS: UMA REVISÃO SISTEMÁTICA

ResumoObjetivo: Revisar sistematicamente os efeitos do treinamento resistido (TR) sobre a aptidão aeróbia de idosos saudáveis. Procedimentos metodológicos: Foi realizada busca nas bases de dados do Pubmed, Lilacs e Scielo, sem limite de data, com os seguintes descritores: "strength training”, “weight training”, "resistance training", "aerobic fitness", "aerobic power”, "VO2", "elderly",  and "older”. Dos 60 estudos inicialmente acessados, 51 foram excluídos por não atenderem aos critérios estabelecidos na presente revisão. Dos 9 estudos restantes, 4 foram selecionados a partir das referências de outras investigações, totalizando 13 estudos analisados. Síntese dos dados: Dos estudos analisados, 54% obtiveram resultados positivos em relação aos efeitos do TR na aptidão aeróbia de idosos saudáveis. Ao analisar o viés individual de cada estudo, foi possível verificar que, com exceção da randomização adequada, realizada em 91,6% dos estudos, outros critérios metodológicos não foram satisfatórios na totalidade dos estudos, entre eles a ocultação da alocação (8,3%), o cegamento de avaliados e pesquisadores (0%), o cegamento de avaliadores do desfecho (0%), a descrição de perdas e exclusões (62%) e a análise de intenção de tratar (53,8%). Conclusões: Estes resultados sugerem a necessidade de investigações que atendam aos critérios metodológicos supradescritos, visando fornecer resultados que permitam conclusões mais seguras. Embora ocorra falta de consenso na literatura, bem como os critérios metodológicos dos estudos analisados limitam possíveis conclusões, o TR parece desempenhar importante papel no incremento da aptidão aeróbia de idosos saudáveis.Palavras-chave: Treinamento de Força; Capacidade Aeróbia; Envelhecimento. AbstractObjective: To review systematically the effects of resistance training (RT) on the aerobic fitness of healthy elderly. Methodological procedures: A search was performed in the Pubmed, Lilacs and Scielo databases, no date limit, with the following descriptors: "strength training", "weight training", "resistance training", "aerobic fitness", "aerobic power", "VO2", "elderly", and "older". Of the 60 studies initially accessed, 51 were excluded for not meeting the criteria set out in this review. Of the remaining 9 studies, 4 were selected from references from other investigations totaling 13 studies analyzed. Summary of the findings: Of the studies analyzed, 54% had positive results regarding the effects of TR in aerobic fitness of healthy elderly. Analyzing the individual bias of each study, we found that with the exception of randomization appropriate, carried out in 91.6% of the studies, other methodological criteria were not satisfactory in all studies, including the concealment of allocation (8.3%), the blinding evaluated and researchers (0%), blinding assessors outcome (0%), the description losses and deletions (62%) and the analysis of intention to treat (53.8%). Conclusions: These results suggest the need for research that meet the above methodological criteria, aiming at providing results that allow safer conclusions.
