Methods of consensus building for community based fisheries management in Bangladesh and the Mekong Delta:

    Get PDF
A method of consensus building for management of wetlands and fisheries using a systematic approach to participatory planning and initially developed in Bangladesh is now being applied in both Bangladesh and the Mekong delta. The method recognizes diversity in livelihoods and works through a structured learning and planning process that focuses on common interests. It works with each category of stakeholder separately to prioritize the natural resource problems that their livelihoods are largely dependent on, they then share and agree common priorities in plenary. Then the stakeholder groups separately analyze possible solutions and their impacts, before meeting in plenary to share their analysis and form a consensus on win-win solutions. The process identifies the collective actions that are needed to arrive at preferred solutions, and determines potential impacts on different stakeholders and responsibilities for implementation, monitoring and evaluation. We outline the process in the context of building social capital through consensus, and compare indicators of social capital as an outcome of its application in a Vietnamese village in the Mekong delta with the outcomes of a similar process in a floodplain wetland in Bangladesh.Capacity,

A Survey of Teacher Attitude Regarding Self-Awareness and Inclusive Education of Special Education Students

Self-awareness is not something that develops individually or in solitude. Merriam-Webster (Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2019) defines self-awareness as, “an awareness of one\u27s own personality or individuality.” Schools have started to increase their understanding of the relevance of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and have been progressively providing more training in this area to their teachers. Inclusion happens when students with disabilities to mingle and learn with typically developing students; learn from each other and experiencing social expectations together. Research has indicated that students with learning and behavior disabilities lack social and emotional skills, specifically self-awareness skills. In this study, educators were surveyed on their experience with inclusion and the self-awareness abilities of their students. The study focuses on the feelings and attitudes associated between inclusion and students’ self-awareness. The purpose was to understand education professionals’ thoughts and perspectives towards inclusion and their awareness of the effects that inclusion has on a special education students’ self-awareness skills. The participants in this study have given written permission and agreement to be part of this study. They remain anonymous to maintain confidentiality and validity of the data provided. It has been concluded that the participants surveyed support inclusion in their classrooms, but are uncomfortable including all special education students in their classrooms. The participants expressed that they understand what self-awareness is, but do not believe inclusion will increase self-awareness skills among students with disabilities

Barriers to Closing Waste Loops in the European Union - Implications for circular economy platforms in waste management

The idea of a circular economy (CE) has long been discussed in the European Union (EU) as a solution to environmental unsustainability. Implementation of CE has been limited however. Our research objectives can be summarized as investigating the barriers in the EU waste management supply chain to closing waste loops using digital waste exchange platforms. During the review of literature, two sets of barriers were found to exemplify the current challenges in the waste industry to close waste loops and the obstacles to adopting a digital waste exchange platform. The empirical part of the research consisted of 31 semi-structured interviews with respondents from industry, waste management, end users of waste, platform providers and experts on waste management or CE. The respondents were from across the EU. During the interview process an interview guide was used to steer discussion and obtain qualitative data which were interpreted using the two groups of previously identified barriers. Subsequently a cross analysis was performed between the two sets of barriers to reveal which aspects of the industry had to change to enable the closing of waste loops using a waste exchange platform. It was found that financial barriers were most prominent in the analysis of challenges related to developing circular economies. The current market structure was also seen as having an impact on the pace of industry development. Regarding the adoption of platform, the most significant barriers was the lack of accurate information for waste related materials (standardisation & classification). Furthermore, respondents saw imbalances in the market structure which seemed to favour downstream companies. Lastly, a framework for improved classification of waste was created and emerged as the theoretical contribution of the research. The study emerges as a stepping stone towards future research into operational challenges of adopting industry platforms to coordinate information and materials between ecosystem participants

Science is basically "passive" observation of the universe, as it exists to generate knowledge. Engineering is making use of that knowledge to meet human needs by creating machine, systems, process and technologies that have not previously existed. Design and manufacturing are the synthetic part of engineering practice. Manufacturer has received a lot of attention recently for very good economic reasons. The use of renewable energy resources is increasing rapidly. Following this trend, the implementation of large area solar arrays is to be considered. Due to energy drivers that include uncertainty in oil prices and environmental concerns, effective management of energy system is a priority. Energy policy can focus on three areas to improve energy system like renewable energy supply, efficiency improvement and demand reduction. The solar collectors used in the solar heating plants are flat plate solar collectors and compound parabolic solar collector. If the solar irradiance is high the volume flow rate is high, if the solar irradiance is low the volume flow rate is low. When the efficiency of a solar collector is determine often only one volume flow rate. The flat plate solar collector is the simplest form of solar energy collector. It has been widely and efficiency used in many low temperature application in the field of solar energy utilization. This paper emphasis on the maximum utilization of solar power as energy. It can be most often used at various locations such as house and industry. The additional advantage of this project is it can be used as portable solar collector

The Somatic Genomic Landscape of Glioblastoma

    Get PDF
We describe the landscape of somatic genomic alterations based on multi-dimensional and comprehensive characterization of more than 500 glioblastoma tumors (GBMs). We identify several novel mutated genes as well as complex rearrangements of signature receptors including EGFR and PDGFRA. TERT promoter mutations are shown to correlate with elevated mRNA expression, supporting a role in telomerase reactivation. Correlative analyses confirm that the survival advantage of the proneural subtype is conferred by the G-CIMP phenotype, and MGMT DNA methylation may be a predictive biomarker for treatment response only in classical subtype GBM. Integrative analysis of genomic and proteomic profiles challenges the notion of therapeutic inhibition of a pathway as an alternative to inhibition of the target itself. These data will facilitate the discovery of therapeutic and diagnostic target candidates, the validation of research and clinical observations and the generation of unanticipated hypotheses that can advance our molecular understanding of this lethal cancer

The steady increase in international migration has brought about many challenges to those working in the field of healthcare. Providing care that takes into account a patient’s ethnic background as well as their cultural beliefs, values and customs has become increasingly recognized as being an important aspect of caring for patients in a holistic manner. In this thesis we sought answers to two research questions: 1) What experiences do immigrant women report regarding childbirth in a new country? and 2) What implications do these findings have for nursing and midwifery practices and education? The purpose of this project is to examine the reported healthcare experiences of one specific group of migrants: immigrant women giving birth in a new country and summarize this information. Our aim is to explore the implications that our findings will have on midwifery and nursing care. Three electronic databases (Cinahl, PubMed and EBSCOhost) were searched for relevant literature, with a final result of seven research articles matching the criteria set by the authors. The findings of these articles were examined and the information synthesized using inductive content analysis. After coding the findings of the literature, the following five themes emerged: communication difficulties; lack of cultural competence; lack of sensitivity and empathy; clinical expertise; settings and practice. These raised issues concerning whether or not the women participating in the studies felt that they were in control during childbirth; whether their emotional and physical needs were met; and whether their expectations of the childbirth experience were fulfilled. Additionally, concerns regarding violations of the participants’ rights were noted. Education and access to information are called for to ensure that patients receive care which is culturally appropriate and shows them due respect. Healthcare should take into account the patient’s emotional as well as physical needs in order to provide a childbirth experience which is positive. This includes providing the necessary information to the patient required to ensure their ability to control their own care. More research is needed which exclusively targets the act of childbirth, as well as studies which would examine the experiences of specific groups of migrants.Maahanmuuton kasvu on tuonut mukanaan paljon haasteita synnytyksen hoitoon.

Symptomatology and treatment outcomes in patients with occult constipation in Region Gävleborg 2017-2019

    No full text
Introduction Occult constipation (OC) – a subtype of constipation causing chronic or recurring gastrointestinal symptoms in the absence of classic symptoms of overt constipation – is a differential diagnosis that should be considered in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms of unclear etiology. Previous studies have investigated the symptomatology of OC and compared treatment regimens but to our knowledge there have been no studies comparing symptomatology with treatment outcomes to investigate whether some symptoms could be related to a better prognosis. Aim The aims of this study were to describe the symptoms present in patients with OC as well as investigate possible association between symptoms and treatment outcomes. Method This was a retrospective review of patient records including 88 patients under 18 years old with diagnosed constipation treated by Dr. Magnus Liljedahl at Gävle Hospital between 2017 and 2019. Results Out of the 88 patients included in the study, six (6.8 %) were classed as having suspected OC, 18 (20.5 %) confirmed OC and 44 (50.0 %) overt constipation. The most common symptoms in patients with OC were abdominal pain, fatigue, headache, back pain, and nausea. On follow-up, 16 patients with OC were symptom-free and three had symptoms remaining. When comparing symptomatology of OC with treatment outcomes no statistically significant differences were seen between the groups. Conclusion This study gives an overview of the symptoms seen in OC but limited information on any association between symptomatology and treatment outcomes. It does, however, emphasize that OC is a differential diagnosis in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms of unclear etiology

Perehdytys ja työhyvinvointi : käsi kädessä?

    Get PDF
When a new employee enters a new job, he will be told important things about his future work, the community and the organization. This step is called orientation, more precisely first orientation. Orientation differs from supervision in that supervision focuses more on developing professional skills and coping while orientation familiarizes the new employee with his job. A person´s self-perceived well-being affects his occupational well-being as well as all aspects of the working environment. When work and leisure time are in balance, he will experience well-being. Knowledge is central to well-being and a good orientation strengthens well-being. Orientation is also communication between the members of the working community and the communication, i.e. the flow of information, is very important to successful workplace activities. In this study we search the connection between the orientation and the professional well-being. We want to find out what really is the matter between these two subjects. Do people consider orientation as important at work as it is thought to be in theory? How does an orientation portfolio affect the workload and further well-being of new employees? These questions were studied by a written survey, i.e. semi-structured questionnaire, with the same questions and statements for every respondent. The survey was made in five libraries which were about the same size as the Ilmajoki municipal library. Their results were compared with the situation in Ilmajoki library. Relating to this developing study we made a well-being survey to the Ilmajoki library staff and the responses were mirrored in the stairs of professional well-being conducted from Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. This well-being study was carried out before the making of the orientation portfolio which is the product of this work, and again a few months later. Orientation and professional well-being go hand in hand, at least in theory. The responses indicate that orientation is often taken care by those who have time and that orientation does not influence much on staff workload but does have some effect on professional skills. Many libraries do not use orientation portfolios and they do not consider them necessary for them at all. Orientation is co-operation, not so much the responsibility of the manager but something all employees should be involved in. The responses indicate that orientation and well-being are not as closely linked as one could think. As to the stairs of professional well-being, Ilmajoki library is doing well but the orientation portfolio has not improved well-being except with the exception of the orientation phase
