    Stable Chromomagnetic QCD Vacuum and Confinement

    The stable chromomagnetic vacuum for SU(2) Yang-Mills theory found earlier is shown to give a model for confinement in QCD, using Wilson loop, and a linear potential (in the leading order) for quark-antiquark interaction. The coefficient kk in this potential is found to be ∼0.25GeV2\sim 0.25 GeV^2, in satisfactory agreement with non-relativistic potential model calculations for charmonium. At finite temperature, the real effective energy density found earlier is used to obtain estimates of the deconfining temperature agreeing reasonably with lattice study for SU(2).Comment: Talk delivered at the conference on 'Strong Interactions in the 21st Century', held at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, Feb. 10 - 12, 201

    A review of type Ia supernova spectra

    SN 2011fe was the nearest and best-observed type Ia supernova in a generation, and brought previous incomplete datasets into sharp contrast with the detailed new data. In retrospect, documenting spectroscopic behaviors of type Ia supernovae has been more often limited by sparse and incomplete temporal sampling than by consequences of signal-to-noise ratios, telluric features, or small sample sizes. As a result, type Ia supernovae have been primarily studied insofar as parameters discretized by relative epochs and incomplete temporal snapshots near maximum light. Here we discuss a necessary next step toward consistently modeling and directly measuring spectroscopic observables of type Ia supernova spectra. In addition, we analyze current spectroscopic data in the parameter space defined by empirical metrics, which will be relevant even after progenitors are observed and detailed models are refined.Comment: 58 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in Ap&SS as an invited revie

    Seasonal relationships between Indian summer monsoon rainfall and the Southern Oscillation.

    Association between the all-India summer monsoon (June to September) rainfall and an index of the Southern Oscillation (SO) is studied in relation to the vagaries of the monsoon rainfall and the seasonal characteristics of the SO. The SOI values of different months and standard seasons show opposite tendencies during deficient and excess years of all-India monsoon rainfall. The correlation coefficients between the all-India monsoon rainfall series and the SOIs of summer monsoon, autumn and winter minus spring seasons are significant at the 1 per cent level

    Distance Cautious IP - A Systematic Approach in VANETS

    VANET is a decentralized network that allows the vehicles to communicate with each other for providingsafety warning, traffic management and driver assistance systems. Vehicular IP in Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (VIP-WAVE)has characterized the IP configuration for extended andnon-extended IP services, and amobilitymanagement scheme supportedby Proxy Mobile IPv6 over WAVE.As the vehicular networks are formed even in remote areas with inadequate power source, the units have power constraints which are overcome by power control in the proposed system .The objective of the paper is to improve the quality of the network by providing internet accesswith transmit power control along which the distance between the RSU and on-board vehicular units(OBU)is determined i.e., power consumption is reduced when at least distance.     Livelihood Risk from HIV in Semi-Arid Tropics of Rural Andhra Pradesh

    This paper discusses the livelihood dynamics in the fragile landscape of the semi-arid tropics (SAT) of Andhra Pradesh. SAT is home to the poorest of the poor who live in conditions of persistent drought, subsistence agriculture and poor access to markets. This paper is a case study focusing particularly on labour migration, its role in influencing the health risk behaviour of migrants and in the spread of the HIV epidemic among SAT rural households. The most vulnerable population in these drought prone regions are the migrant labourers, and their vulnerability is influenced by three major factors—the vulnerability and unstable productivity in the degraded and marginal landscape, the caste system that has traditionally kept them backward and vulnerable, and experiences in the external environment to which they migrate. This study is based on a theoretical framework, whereby livelihood risks lead to health risks, particularly HIV infection—outlines the process that causes a further deterioration of the household and the occurrence of cyclical health risk. The paper calls for a multisectoral approach to tackle the issue of migrant vulnerability, and for interventions with a more migrant-need sensitive approach.
