    Quasiresonant excitation transfer in molecular aggregates@fa@f)

    Excitation transfer in finite molecular aggregates is analyzed in the context of the Haken–Strobl model. Explicit solutions are presented for a trimer and a rectangular tetramer. Special emphasis is placed upon population transfer among subunits (monomers, dimers) and its relationship to energy transfer, and upon the problems associated with coherence of this transfer process. These aggregates serve as models for the problem of excitation transfer in disordered media, where partial coherence resulting from short‐range interactions has been largely ignored. Our most intriguing result is the greatly diminished effectiveness of the longer‐ranged transfer in the presence of short‐range clusters. Under some conditions the ensuing energetic mismatches may well dominate the overall energy transport and render invalid the usual description in terms of hopping among individual sites. An application to triplet energy transport in isotopic mixed naphthalene crystals is given; it is seen that the reduced efficiency of non‐nearest‐neighbor transfer processes reinforces the two‐dimensional characteristics of the energy transport.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/70614/2/JCPSA6-79-3-1444-1.pd

    Exciton transport in disordered crystals: velocity correlation functions

    The two-particle coherent-potential approximation is used to calculate Frenkel-exciton group-velocity correlation functions for substitutionally disordered crystals. Most of the results can be described by a relaxation-time approximation, provided that k-dependent and complex relaxation times are allowed; however, some evidence for long-time tails, associated with the finite frequency range of the scattering potentials, is found.     Two-particle continuous-time random walks and binary reactions in disordered media

    The relation between unary-(trappihg) and binary (mutual annihilation) reactions in disordered systems is studied in the framework of the continuous-time random walk.     The linearization method and new classes of exact solutions in cosmology

    We develop a method for constructing exact cosmological solutions of the Einstein equations based on representing them as a second-order linear differential equation. In particular, the method allows using an arbitrary known solution to construct a more general solution parameterized by a set of 3\textit{N} constants, where \textit{N} is an arbitrary natural number. The large number of free parameters may prove useful for constructing a theoretical model that agrees satisfactorily with the results of astronomical observations. Cosmological solutions on the Randall-Sundrum brane have similar properties. We show that three-parameter solutions in the general case already exhibit inflationary regimes. In contrast to previously studied two-parameter solutions, these three-parameter solutions can describe an exit from inflation without a fine tuning of the parameters and also several consecutive inflationary regimes.Comment: 7 page

    Geometry-controlled kinetics

    It has long been appreciated that transport properties can control reaction kinetics. This effect can be characterized by the time it takes a diffusing molecule to reach a target -- the first-passage time (FPT). Although essential to quantify the kinetics of reactions on all time scales, determining the FPT distribution was deemed so far intractable. Here, we calculate analytically this FPT distribution and show that transport processes as various as regular diffusion, anomalous diffusion, diffusion in disordered media and in fractals fall into the same universality classes. Beyond this theoretical aspect, this result changes the views on standard reaction kinetics. More precisely, we argue that geometry can become a key parameter so far ignored in this context, and introduce the concept of "geometry-controlled kinetics". These findings could help understand the crucial role of spatial organization of genes in transcription kinetics, and more generally the impact of geometry on diffusion-limited reactions.Comment: Submitted versio

    MAPlex: A massively parallel sequencing ancestry analysis multiplex for Asia-Pacific populations

    © 2019 The Authors Current forensic ancestry-informative panels are limited in their ability to differentiate populations in the Asia-Pacific region. MAPlex (Multiplex for the Asia-Pacific), a massively parallel sequencing (MPS) assay, was developed to improve differentiation of East Asian, South Asian and Near Oceanian populations found in the extensive cross-continental Asian region that shows complex patterns of admixture at its margins. This study reports the development of MAPlex; the selection of SNPs in combination with microhaplotype markers; assay design considerations for reducing the lengths of microhaplotypes while preserving their ancestry-informativeness; adoption of new population-informative multiple-allele SNPs; compilation of South Asian-informative SNPs suitable for forensic AIMs panels; and the compilation of extensive reference and test population genotypes from online whole-genome-sequence data for MAPlex markers. STRUCTURE genetic clustering software was used to gauge the ability of MAPlex to differentiate a broad set of populations from South and East Asia, the West Pacific regions of Near Oceania, as well as the other globally distributed population groups. Preliminary assessment of MAPlex indicates enhanced South Asian differentiation with increased divergence between West Eurasian, South Asian and East Asian populations, compared to previous forensic SNP panels of comparable scale. In addition, MAPlex shows efficient differentiation of Middle Eastern individuals from Europeans. MAPlex is the first forensic AIM assay to combine binary and multiple-allele SNPs with microhaplotypes, adding the potential to detect and analyze mixed source forensic DNA

    Live lecture versus video podcast in undergraduate medical education: A randomised controlled trial

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Information technology is finding an increasing role in the training of medical students. We compared information recall and student experience and preference after live lectures and video podcasts in undergraduate medical education.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We performed a crossover randomised controlled trial. 100 students were randomised to live lecture or video podcast for one clinical topic. Live lectures were given by the same instructor as the narrator of the video podcasts. The video podcasts comprised Powerpointℱ slides narrated using the same script as the lecture. They were then switched to the other group for a second clinical topic. Knowledge was assessed using multiple choice questions and qualitative information was collected using a questionnaire.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>No significant difference was found on multiple choice questioning immediately after the session. The subjects enjoyed the convenience of the video podcast and the ability to stop, review and repeat it, but found it less engaging as a teaching method. They expressed a clear preference for the live lecture format.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We suggest that video podcasts are not ready to replace traditional teaching methods, but may have an important role in reinforcing learning and aiding revision.</p

    Virtual reality exposure therapy as treatment for pain catastrophizing in fibromyalgia patients: proof-of-concept study (Study Protocol)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Albeit exercise is currently advocated as one of the most effective management strategies for fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS); the implementation of exercise as a FMS treatment in reality is significantly hampered by patients' poor compliance. The inference that pain catastrophizing is a key predictor of poor compliance in FMS patients, justifies considering the alteration of pain catastrophizing in improving compliance towards exercises in FMS patients. The aim of this study is to provide proof-of-concept for the development and testing of a novel virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) program as treatment for exercise-related pain catastrophizing in FMS patients.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Two interlinked experimental studies will be conducted. Study 1 aims to objectively ascertain if neurophysiological changes occur in the functional brain areas associated with pain catastrophizing, when catastrophizing FMS subjects are exposed to visuals of exercise activities. Study 2 aims to ascertain the preliminary efficacy and feasibility of exposure to visuals of exercise activities as a treatment for exercise-related pain catastrophizing in FMS subjects. Twenty subjects will be selected from a group of FMS patients attending the Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa and randomly allocated to either the <b>VRET </b>(intervention) group or <b>waiting list </b>(control) group. Baseline neurophysiological activity for subjects will be collected in study 1 using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In study 2, clinical improvement in pain catastrophizing will be measured using fMRI (objective) and the pain catastrophizing scale (subjective).</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>The premise is if exposing FMS patients to visuals of various exercise activities trigger the functional brain areas associated with pain catastrophizing; then as a treatment, repeated exposure to visuals of the exercise activities using a VRET program could possibly decrease exercise-related pain catastrophizing in FMS patients. Proof-of-concept will either be established or negated. The results of this project are envisaged to revolutionize FMS and pain catastrophizing research and in the future, assist health professionals and FMS patients in reducing despondency regarding FMS management.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>PACTR201011000264179</p

    Managing uncertainty: a review of food system scenario analysis and modelling

    Complex socio-ecological systems like the food system are unpredictable, especially to long-term horizons such as 2050. In order to manage this uncertainty, scenario analysis has been used in conjunction with food system models to explore plausible future outcomes. Food system scenarios use a diversity of scenario types and modelling approaches determined by the purpose of the exercise and by technical, methodological and epistemological constraints. Our case studies do not suggest Malthusian futures for a projected global population of 9 billion in 2050; but international trade will be a crucial determinant of outcomes; and the concept of sustainability across the dimensions of the food system has been inadequately explored so far. The impact of scenario analysis at a global scale could be strengthened with participatory processes involving key actors at other geographical scales. Food system models are valuable in managing existing knowledge on system behaviour and ensuring the credibility of qualitative stories but they are limited by current datasets for global crop production and trade, land use and hydrology. Climate change is likely to challenge the adaptive capacity of agricultural production and there are important knowledge gaps for modelling research to address
