Triggering the Formation of Halo Globular Clusters with Galaxy Outflows
We investigate the interactions of high-redshift galaxy outflows with
low-mass virialized (Tvir < 10,000K) clouds of primordial composition. While
atomic cooling allows star formation in larger primordial objects, such
"minihalos" are generally unable to form stars by themselves. However, the
large population of high-redshift starburst galaxies may have induced
widespread star formation in these objects, via shocks that caused intense
cooling both through nonequilibrium H2 formation and metal-line emission. Using
a simple analytic model, we show that the resulting star clusters naturally
reproduce three key features of the observed population of halo globular
clusters (GCs). First, the 10,000 K maximum virial temperature corresponds to
the ~ 10^6 solar mass upper limit on the stellar mass of GCs. Secondly, the
momentum imparted in such interactions is sufficient to strip the gas from its
associated dark matter halo, explaining why GCs do not reside in dark matter
potential wells. Finally, the mixing of ejected metals into the primordial gas
is able to explain the ~ 0.1 dex homogeneity of stellar metallicities within a
given GC, while at the same time allowing for a large spread in metallicity
between different clusters. To study this possibility in detail, we use a
simple 1D numerical model of turbulence transport to simulate mixing in
cloud-outflow interactions. We find that as the shock shears across the side of
the cloud, Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities arise, which cause mixing of enriched
material into > 20% of the cloud. Such estimates ignore the likely presence of
large-scale vortices, however, which would further enhance turbulence
generation. Thus quantitative mixing predictions must await more detailed
numerical studies.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, Apj in pres
Message handling system concepts and services in a land mobile satellite system
A network architecture containing the capabilities offered by the Message Handling System (MHS) to the PRODAT Land Mobile Satellite System (LMSS) is described taking into account the constraints of a preexisting satellite system which is going to become operational. The mapping between MHS services and PRODAT requirements is also reported and shows that the supplied performance can be significantly enhanced to both fixed and mobile users. The impact of the insertion of additional features on the system structure, especially on the centralized control unit, are also addressed

Electron quantum optics : partitioning electrons one by one
We have realized a quantum optics like Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT)
experiment by partitioning, on an electronic beam-splitter, single elementary
electronic excitations produced one by one by an on-demand emitter. We show
that the measurement of the output currents correlations in the HBT geometry
provides a direct counting, at the single charge level, of the elementary
excitations (electron/hole pairs) generated by the emitter at each cycle. We
observe the antibunching of low energy excitations emitted by the source with
thermal excitations of the Fermi sea already present in the input leads of the
splitter, which suppresses their contribution to the partition noise. This
effect is used to probe the energy distribution of the emitted wave-packets.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Morphology of the <i>Buccal apparatus</i> and related structures in four species of Carapidae
The aims of this study were (1) to compare the morphology of the Buccal apparatus, the suspensorium and the opercle in four species of Carapidae (Carapus acus, Encheliophis boraborensis, Encheliophis homei and Encheliophis gracilis) and (2) to investigate the relationships between their cranial anatomy, their carnivorous diet, and their well known ability to enter holothurians. The complex and strong dentition and the wide hyomandibular with thickenings that seem to suit the constraints of the adductor mandibulae muscles partly inserted on the neurocranium are signs of a carnivorous diet.C. acus, E. boraborensis and E. homei have extremely strong buccal pieces and can protrude their upper jaws. However, in E. gracilis, the jaws are more slender, and the insertions of the Al along the entire length of the maxillary associated with the lack of mobility between the maxillary and the premaxillary prevent buccal protrusion. These differences could be related to the diet: C. acus, E. boraborensis and E. homei can feed on fishes and crustaceans, whereas E. gracilis feeds only on holothurian tissue. The cephalic morphology of the four species is not incompatible with entering the host. However, the neutralisation of the suboperculum spine by 'cartilaginous' tissue could be considered to be a particular adaptation to this behaviour
Dynamical evolution of the mass function and radial profile of the Galactic globular cluster system
Evolution of the mass function (MF) and radial distribution (RD) of the
Galactic globular cluster (GC) system is calculated using an advanced and a
realistic Fokker-Planck (FP) model that considers dynamical friction,
disc/bulge shocks and eccentric cluster orbits. We perform hundreds of FP
calculations with different initial cluster conditions, and then search a
wide-parameter space for the best-fitting initial GC MF and RD that evolves
into the observed present-day Galactic GC MF and RD. By allowing both MF and RD
of the initial GC system to vary, which is attempted for the first time in the
present Letter, we find that our best-fitting models have a higher peak mass
for a lognormal initial MF and a higher cut-off mass for a power-law initial MF
than previous estimates, but our initial total masses in GCs, M_{T,i} =
1.5-1.8x10^8 Msun, are comparable to previous results. Significant findings
include that our best-fitting lognormal MF shifts downward by 0.35 dex during
the period of 13 Gyr, and that our power-law initial MF models well-fit the
observed MF and RD only when the initial MF is truncated at >~10^5 Msun. We
also find that our results are insensitive to the initial distribution of orbit
eccentricity and inclination, but are rather sensitive to the initial
concentration of the clusters and to how the initial tidal radius is defined.
If the clusters are assumed to be formed at the apocentre while filling the
tidal radius there, M_{T,i} can be as high as 6.9x10^8 Msun, which amounts to
~75 per cent of the current mass in the stellar halo.Comment: To appear in May 2008 issue of MNRAS, 386, L6
Morphological particularities of the head in four Carapidae (Ophidiiformes)
A study of the skull and the musculature of the oral and pharyngeal region of four adult Carapidae species (Encheliophis boraboreruis, E. homei. E. gracilis and Carapus acus) has been undertaken to compare it with the diet related characters. The cephalic organization of E. boraborensis and E. gracilis seems related to diet (mainly fishes and shrimps for the first one and holothurian tissues for the other): these species are respectively commensal and parasitic. Although the feeding characters of E. homei and C. acus are closely similar to those of E. boraborensis, there are sparse observations of holothurian tissues in their stomach contents. It is suggested that these fishes are commensal when they are adults and have parasitic tendency when they are juveniles
Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer: A Review of Epidemiology, Pathogenesis, and Treatment
Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is an uncommon malignancy of the thyroid. Only 1-2% of thyroid cancers are anaplastic, but the disease contributes to 14–50% of the mortality with a median survival of 3 to 5 months. Most patients diagnosed with this disease are 65 years of age or older. The incidence of anaplastic thyroid cancer is decreasing worldwide. Most patients present with a rapidly growing neck mass, dysphagia, or voice change. We performed a comprehensive literature search using PubMed focusing on the treatment of anaplastic thyroid cancer including historical review of treatment and outcomes and investigations of new agents and approaches. A total of sixteen chart review and retrospective studies and eleven prospective studies and/or clinical trials were reviewed. The current standard therapeutic approach is to consider the disease as systemic at time of diagnosis and pursue combined modality therapy incorporating cytoreductive surgical resection where feasible and/or chemoradiation either concurrently or sequentially. Doxorubicin is the most commonly used agent, with a response rate of 22%. Several new agents are currently under investigation. Referral of patients for participation in clinical trials is needed
