Chinaâs rise in a liberal world order in transition â introduction to the FORUM
In a time of great uncertainty about the future and resilience of the liberal world order this Forum focuses on Chinaâs rise and interplay with the foundations of that liberal order. The key question is the extent to and variegated ways in which China - with its (re)ascendance to power and potential global leadership â is adapting to and perhaps even strengthening liberal institutions and rules of the game, confronting them, or developing alternative paths. In this introduction to the Forum we advance three key points based on the contributions. First, contrasting the orthodox binary scenarios of either inevitable conflict or co-optation offered in the mainstream IR debate, the Forum highlights the possibility of a third scenario of Chinaâs interplay with the liberal world and its key actors, institutions, and rules. A hybrid and variegated scenario that entails both conflict and adaptation, differently entangled in different issue areas. Second, it stresses the need to conceptualize and empirically comprise the essentially interlinked nature of domestic state-society models and the global political economy. Third, we argue for a perspective that incorporates underlying economic and social structures and the power relations embedded therein
The broad-band X-ray spectrum of the dipping Low Mass X-ray Binary EXO0748--676
We present results of a 0.1-100 keV BeppoSAX observation of the dipping LMXRB
EXO 0748-676 performed in 2000 November. During the observation the source
exhibited X-ray eclipses, type I X-ray bursts and dipping activity over a wide
range of orbital phases. The 0.1-100keV "dip-free"(ie. dipping and eclipsing
intervals excluded) spectrum is complex,especially at low-energies where a soft
excess is present. Two very different spectral models give satisfactory fits.
The first is the progressive covering model, consisting of separately absorbed
black body and cut-off power-law components.The second model is an absorbed
cut-off power-law together with a moderately ionized absorber with a sub-solar
abundance of Fe and a 2.13 keV absorption feature (tentatively identified with
Si xiii). This ionized absorber may be the same feature as seen by Chandra
during dips from EXO 0748-676.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, paper accepted for publication in Astronomy and

BeppoSAX observations of low-energy spectral features in AGN
The combination of the broad band coverage and moderate spectral resolution
of the LECS and MECS instruments on-board BeppoSAX allow the spectra of AGN to
be studied in unprecedented detail down to 0.1 keV. We describe the calibration
and the performance of the LECS and report on observations of low-energy
absorption features in the spectra of both a low (MCG-6-30-15) and a high
luminosity (3C 273) AGN. These features provide important diagnostics on the
location and nature of the material surrounding the AGN. A comparison of LECS
and ASCA/SIS low energy performance is also presented in the case of 3C 273.Comment: 5 pages. To appear in symposium proceedings: The Active X-Ray Sky,
