Generalizing Boolean Satisfiability III: Implementation
This is the third of three papers describing ZAP, a satisfiability engine
that substantially generalizes existing tools while retaining the performance
characteristics of modern high-performance solvers. The fundamental idea
underlying ZAP is that many problems passed to such engines contain rich
internal structure that is obscured by the Boolean representation used; our
goal has been to define a representation in which this structure is apparent
and can be exploited to improve computational performance. The first paper
surveyed existing work that (knowingly or not) exploited problem structure to
improve the performance of satisfiability engines, and the second paper showed
that this structure could be understood in terms of groups of permutations
acting on individual clauses in any particular Boolean theory. We conclude the
series by discussing the techniques needed to implement our ideas, and by
reporting on their performance on a variety of problem instances
Truthful Multi-unit Procurements with Budgets
We study procurement games where each seller supplies multiple units of his
item, with a cost per unit known only to him. The buyer can purchase any number
of units from each seller, values different combinations of the items
differently, and has a budget for his total payment.
For a special class of procurement games, the {\em bounded knapsack} problem,
we show that no universally truthful budget-feasible mechanism can approximate
the optimal value of the buyer within , where is the total number of
units of all items available. We then construct a polynomial-time mechanism
that gives a -approximation for procurement games with {\em concave
additive valuations}, which include bounded knapsack as a special case. Our
mechanism is thus optimal up to a constant factor. Moreover, for the bounded
knapsack problem, given the well-known FPTAS, our results imply there is a
provable gap between the optimization domain and the mechanism design domain.
Finally, for procurement games with {\em sub-additive valuations}, we
construct a universally truthful budget-feasible mechanism that gives an
-approximation in polynomial time with a

Popular biofortified cassava cultivars are heavily impacted by plant parasitic nematodes, especially Meloidogyne Spp.
Open Access Journal; Published online: 26 June 2020The development of new biofortified cassava cultivars, with higher micronutrient contents, offers great potential to enhance food and nutrition security prospects. Among the various constraints affecting cassava production are plant parasitic nematodes (PPN), especially root-knot nematodes. In this study, six popular biofortified cultivars were field-evaluated for their response to PPN in Nigeria. A field naturally infested with a diversity of PPN but dominated by root-knot nematodes was used. Application of the nematicide carbofuran significantly reduced PPN densities, and at harvest, no root galling damage was observed, compared with untreated plots, which had heavy galling damage. Plant height, stem girth, plant weight, marketable storage root number and weight were significantly lower for most cultivars in untreated plots. Percentage yield losses in the range of 21.3–63.7% were recorded from two separate trials conducted for 12 months each. Lower total carotenoid and dry matter contents were associated with higher PPN densities in some biofortified cultivars, resulting in a loss of as much as 63% of total carotenoid and 52% of dry matter contents. The number and weight of rotted storage roots were significantly greater in untreated plots across cultivars, reducing in-field and post-harvest storability. This study demonstrates that natural field populations of PPN can substantially affect yield, quality and nutritional value of released biofortified cassava cultivar
A selected ion flow tube study of the ion-molecule reactions of monochloroethene, trichloroethene and tetrachloroethene
Data for the rate coefficients and product cations of the reactions of a large number of atomic and small molecular cations with monochloroethene, trichloroethene and tetrachloroethene in a selected ion flow tube at 298 K are reported. The recombination energy of the ions range from 6.27 eV (HO) through to 21.56 eV (Ne). Collisional rate coefficients are calculated by modified average dipole orientation theory and compared with experimental values. Thermochemistry and mass balance predict the most feasible neutral products. Together with previously reported results for the three isomers of dichloroethene (J. Phys. Chem. A., 2006, 110, 5760), the fragment ion branching ratios have been compared with those from threshold photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy over the photon energy range 9-22 eV to determine the importance or otherwise of long-range charge transfer. For ions with recombination energy in excess of the ionisation energy of the chloroethene, charge transfer is energetically allowed. The similarity of the branching ratios from the two experiments suggest that long-range charge transfer is dominant. For ions with recombination energy less than the ionisation energy, charge transfer is not allowed; chemical reaction can only occur following formation of an ion-molecule complex, where steric effects are more significant. The products that are now formed and their percentage yield is a complex interplay between the number and position of the chlorine atoms with respect to the C=C bond, where inductive and conjugation effects can be important

Focused Local Search for Random 3-Satisfiability
A local search algorithm solving an NP-complete optimisation problem can be
viewed as a stochastic process moving in an 'energy landscape' towards
eventually finding an optimal solution. For the random 3-satisfiability
problem, the heuristic of focusing the local moves on the presently
unsatisfiedclauses is known to be very effective: the time to solution has been
observed to grow only linearly in the number of variables, for a given
clauses-to-variables ratio sufficiently far below the critical
satisfiability threshold . We present numerical results
on the behaviour of three focused local search algorithms for this problem,
considering in particular the characteristics of a focused variant of the
simple Metropolis dynamics. We estimate the optimal value for the
``temperature'' parameter for this algorithm, such that its linear-time
regime extends as close to as possible. Similar parameter
optimisation is performed also for the well-known WalkSAT algorithm and for the
less studied, but very well performing Focused Record-to-Record Travel method.
We observe that with an appropriate choice of parameters, the linear time
regime for each of these algorithms seems to extend well into ratios -- much further than has so far been generally assumed. We discuss the
statistics of solution times for the algorithms, relate their performance to
the process of ``whitening'', and present some conjectures on the shape of
their computational phase diagrams.Comment: 20 pages, lots of figure
Managing the delivery of iconic football stadiums in England
The English football premier league has become the most
popular sports league in the world; with ardent fans and
audiences all over the world. The potential business
opportunities that this growth holds have therefore
attracted investors who are keen to buy shares in the
clubs and sign up the best footballers that money can buy.
Underpinning the growth in all of the premier league clubs
is a desire to make a distinct statement of identity as part
of a competitive strategy. One way to achieve this is
through the design and construction of iconic football
stadiums. This paper explores the specific project
management challenges associated with delivery of iconic
football stadiums in England and draws lessons for the
management of similar iconic infrastructure projects. A
study of project management best practice and some case
studies shows that key issues which are common to these
projects are centred on design management; choice of
procurement route; client management; and stakeholder
expectation management. These issues are not necessarily
unique to the project management of iconic football
stadiums but are amplified by the context of these
projects. The emphasis on iconic status in a competitive
market also means that stadium projects should be
conceived and delivered in the context of other strategic
projects which should be clearly understood by the project
management team
Welfare and Revenue Guarantees for Competitive Bundling Equilibrium
We study equilibria of markets with heterogeneous indivisible goods and
consumers with combinatorial preferences. It is well known that a
competitive equilibrium is not guaranteed to exist when valuations are not
gross substitutes. Given the widespread use of bundling in real-life markets,
we study its role as a stabilizing and coordinating device by considering the
notion of \emph{competitive bundling equilibrium}: a competitive equilibrium
over the market induced by partitioning the goods for sale into fixed bundles.
Compared to other equilibrium concepts involving bundles, this notion has the
advantage of simulatneous succinctness ( prices) and market clearance.
Our first set of results concern welfare guarantees. We show that in markets
where consumers care only about the number of goods they receive (known as
multi-unit or homogeneous markets), even in the presence of complementarities,
there always exists a competitive bundling equilibrium that guarantees a
logarithmic fraction of the optimal welfare, and this guarantee is tight. We
also establish non-trivial welfare guarantees for general markets, two-consumer
markets, and markets where the consumer valuations are additive up to a fixed
budget (budget-additive).
Our second set of results concern revenue guarantees. Motivated by the fact
that the revenue extracted in a standard competitive equilibrium may be zero
(even with simple unit-demand consumers), we show that for natural subclasses
of gross substitutes valuations, there always exists a competitive bundling
equilibrium that extracts a logarithmic fraction of the optimal welfare, and
this guarantee is tight. The notion of competitive bundling equilibrium can
thus be useful even in markets which possess a standard competitive
equilibrium
Flight Lieutenant Peach's observations on Burning Feet Syndrome in Far Eastern Prisoners of War 1942-45.
Introduction: ‘Burning Feet Syndrome’ affected up to one third of Far Eastern Prisoners of War in World War 2. Recently discovered medical records, produced by RAF Medical Officer Nowell Peach whilst in captivity, are the first to detail neurological examinations of patients with this condition.
Methods: The 54 sets of case notes produced at the time were analysed using modern diagnostic criteria to determine if the syndrome can be retrospectively classed as neuropathic pain.
Results: With a history of severe malnutrition raising the possibility of a peripheral polyneuropathy, and a neuroanatomically plausible pain distribution, this analysis showed that Burning Feet Syndrome can now be described as a ‘possible’ neuropathic pain syndrome.
Conclusion: After 70 years, the data painstakingly gathered under the worst of circumstances have proved to be of interest and value in modern diagnostics of neuropathic pain
Stress controls on transport properties of the Mercia Mudstone Group: importance for hydrocarbon depletion and CO 2 injection
The physical properties of the Mercia Mudstone Group (MMG) are of interest to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in the UK, both in terms of the sealing capacity of certain horizons and in order to assess scenarios involving CO2 migration in the overburden above potential CCS sites. In this study, the hydromechanical properties of MMG samples from the Larne Basin, Northern Ireland, were directly measured under steady-state conditions. Test samples were found to be good seals, with hydraulic permeabilities ranging from ≈2.1 x 10−18 to 8.4 x 10−21 m2 (2.1 x 10−3 to 8.5 x 10−6 mD). A detailed examination of the consolidation behaviour of the material yielded values for compressibility, hydraulic permeability and specific storage, as a function of effective pressure. Consolidation testing also provided preconsolidation pressure values of between 30 and 37 MPa. Test data were fitted to a linear elastic model using a two-dimension finite element approach, yielding hydraulic permeability and Young's Modulus, as a function of effective pressure. Findings suggest localisation of flow, due to small-scale heterogeneity, may play a role even in relatively large test samples. Results also highlight the impact of methodology on resulting permeabilities and the importance of using values measured at boundary conditions appropriate for the specific application. Critical state envelopes were derived from test data and used to conduct a scenario analysis, considering a range of stress paths, to examine the impacts of depletion and reinflation during CO2 injection. Initial stress conditions, stress path gradient and caprock heterogeneity were all found to be influencing factors on the potential for yield during depletion and the resulting deformation mode. The response to CO2 injection is less clear, but will be impacted by the initial caprock permeability and resulting drainage response. An awareness of these controls on caprock performance during stress path changes may aid in the selection of depleted CCS sites with geomechanically favourable characteristics for reinjection
