Enhancing Christian School Experiences for Pre-Service Teachers through Service-Learning Partnerships

The mission of the Teacher Licensure Program at Liberty University is to develop competent professionals with a Christian worldview for Christian, public, and private schools. To be consistent with the mission, classroom experience in both Christian and public schools should be required for each teacher candidate who successfully completes Liberty’s program. One of the challenges in the implementation of the mission has been an inadequate number of field experience placements available in Christian school settings

The potential contribution of small firms to innovation in the built environment.

The methods by which small firms overcome the disadvantages of their size to implement innovation on construction projects are examined here through five case studies. It is found that such methods include working with advanced clients, prioritising relationship-building strategies and using patents to protect intellectual property. Key obstacles to innovation implementation by small firms on construction projects are found to be bias in the allocation of government business assistance and regulatory inefficiencies under federal systems of government. The study’s findings derive from a theoretical framework which emphasises firm capabilities and environment, and innovation typologies. Further research is recommended into the impact of government assistance and regulation on small innovative construction firms

The Use of Re-authoring to Reconcile Fundamentalist Religious Beliefs with Sexual Orientation: A Narrative Study

A narrative qualitative research design was used to understand the journeys of three lesbians with Oneness Pentecostal backgrounds who have reconciled their religious beliefs with their sexual orientation. Three participants were selected who met the following criteria: (a) the participant is a lesbian female who (b) grew up in a Oneness Pentecostal church and (c) has reconciled being a lesbian with her religious beliefs, and who is (d) willing to discuss her outing process. These participants were interviewed. The interview questions were submitted to participants prior to the scheduled interviews. The interviews began with an open-ended inquiry. In answer to the research question, the three participants’ stories revealed that reconciliation journeys are unique and complicated. The motivation to embark on a journey of reconciliation of religious beliefs with sexual orientation stemmed from the participants’ same-sex attractions. Further motivators for the participants to explore and reconstruct religious beliefs were feelings of shame and guilt. The participants arrived at a place where they could no longer deny their feelings. As I read the participants’ stories, I analyzed the stories by utilizing the narrative therapy term of “re-authoring.” I found that the three unifying aspects of re-authoring in the participants’ stories were re-authoring religious beliefs, re-authoring definitions of family and re-authoring self.

Metabolic Network Construction Based on the Genome of the Marine Diatom Thalassiosira Pseudonana and the Analysis of Genome-wide Transcriptome Data to Investigate Triacylglyceride Accumulation

Algal lipids called triacylglycerols (TAGs) are essential compounds in marine ecology and are also used as the basis for commercial production of algal biofuels and omega-3 nutraceuticals. The goal of this thesis was to elucidate the biochemical processes associated with algal lipid accumulation in diatoms under different environmental conditions. The approach made use of the Mock et al. whole genome tiling microarray gene expression database for Thalassiosira pseudonana and gene annotations derived from the whole genome sequencing work of Armbrust et al. The analytical approach used bioinformatic tools, including Stanford Research Institute\u27s (SRI) BioCyc Pathway tool and the Joint Genome Institute\u27s (JGI) Integrated Microbial Genomes/Expert Review (IMG/ER) tool. This analysis has resulted in building the first whole genome BioCyc pathway model for T. pseudonana that includes over three hundred metabolic pathways. The analysis of the Mock transcriptome data in combination with the pathway model illustrated not only the activity of fatty acid and lipid pathways but also the interplay of other pathways that affect the accumulation of TAGs under different environmental conditions. This in silico analytical approach also revealed evidence for un-annotated gene functions and lack of the key regulatory protein PII pointing to the distinctive metabolic features of marine diatoms

Learning Style Diversity in Post –Secondary Distance Education

During the fall semester of 2005, 153 university graduate students’ preferred learning styles were measured with the Kolb Learning Style Inventory, online version 3.1. The primary findings of the study indicated all of the learning styles and processes described by Kolb were represented in the distance learning population and suggested distance and residential learners uniquely engage the learning process. Biblical references were discussed with respect to the uniqueness displayed by study participants
