Equilibrium States of Liquid, Solid, and Vapor and the Configurations for Copper, Tungsten, and Pores in Liquid-Phase Sintering

    Get PDF
The equilibrium state of the liquid-solid structure during liquid-phase sintering (LPS) is pondered with respect to minimum energy geometries. Besides the solid-liquid ratio, several interfacial energies determine the most stable geometric configuration. In this study, we rely on the attributes of the copper or nickel as the liquid, tungsten as the solid, and vapor to solve for terminal configurations that include liquid pools inside the solid grains. Surface evolution is enabled using a stepwise computer program[1] to rearrange and reshape small grain clusters reflective of LPS based on a preset combination of wetting and dihedral angles. The findings show how different interfacial energies, as a result of oxidation or impurity segregation, play a role in determining the final geometry. The specific concern is identification of situations in which a liquid is stable inside the solid, as observed in some LPS materials.open112Nsciescopu

Obesity-induced DNA hypermethylation of the adiponectin gene mediates insulin resistance

    Get PDF
Adiponectin plays a key role in the regulation of the whole-body energy homeostasis by modulating glucose and lipid metabolism. Although obesity-induced reduction of adiponectin expression is primarily ascribed to a transcriptional regulation failure, the underlying mechanisms are largely undefined. Here we show that DNA hypermethylation of a particular region of the adiponectin promoter suppresses adiponectin expression through epigenetic control and, in turn, exacerbates metabolic diseases in obesity. Obesity-induced, pro-inflammatory cytokines promote DNMT1 expression and its enzymatic activity. Activated DNMT1 selectively methylates and stimulates compact chromatin structure in the adiponectin promoter, impeding adiponectin expression. Suppressing DNMT1 activity with a DNMT inhibitor resulted in the amelioration of obesity-induced glucose intolerance and insulin resistance in an adiponectin-dependent manner. These findings suggest a critical role of adiponectin gene epigenetic control by DNMT1 in governing energy homeostasis, implying that modulating DNMT1 activity represents a new strategy for the treatment of obesity-related diseases.published_or_final_versio

Adiposity and carotid-intima media thickness in children and adolescents: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Adiposity in childhood is associated with later cardiovascular disease (CVD), but it is unclear whether this relationship is independent of other risk factors experienced in later life, such as smoking and hypertension. Carotid-intima media thickness (cIMT) is a measure of subclinical atherosclerosis that may be used to assess CVD risk in young people. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between adiposity and cIMT in children and adolescents. METHODS: We searched Medline, Embase, Global Health, and CINAHL Plus electronic databases (1980–2014). Population-based observational studies that reported a measure of association between objectively-measured adiposity and cIMT in childhood were included in this review. RESULTS: Twenty-two cross-sectional studies were included (n = 7,366 children and adolescents). Thirteen of nineteen studies conducted in adolescent populations (mean age ≥12 years, n = 5,986) reported positive associations between cIMT and adiposity measures (correlation coefficients 0.13 to 0.59). Three studies of pre-adolescent populations (n = 1,380) reported mixed evidence, two studies finding no evidence of a correlation, and one an inverse relationship between skinfolds and cIMT. Included studies did not report an adiposity threshold for subclinical atherosclerosis. CONCLUSIONS: Based on studies conducted mostly in Western Europe and the US, adiposity does not appear to be associated with cIMT in pre-adolescents, but may be associated in adolescents. If further studies confirm these findings, a focus on cardiovascular disease prevention efforts in pre-adolescence, before arterial changes have emerged, may be justified

Sign-reversal of the in-plane resistivity anisotropy in hole-doped iron pnictides

The in-plane anisotropy of the electrical resistivity across the coupled orthorhombic and magnetic transitions of the iron pnictides has been extensively studied in the parent and electron-doped compounds. All these studies universally show that the resistivity ρa\rho_{a} across the long orthorhombic axis aOa_{O} - along which the spins couple antiferromagnetically below the magnetic transition temperature - is smaller than the resistivity ρb\rho_{b} of the short orthorhombic axis bOb_{O}, i. e. ρa<ρb\rho_{a}<\rho_{b}. Here we report that in the hole-doped compounds Ba1x_{1-x}Kx_{x}Fe2_{2}As2_{2}, as the doping level increases, the resistivity anisotropy initially becomes vanishingly small, and eventually changes sign for sufficiently large doping, i. e. ρb<ρa\rho_{b}<\rho_{a}. This observation is in agreement with a recent theoretical prediction that considers the anisotropic scattering of electrons by spin-fluctuations in the orthorhombic/nematic state.Comment: This paper has been replaced by the new version offering new explanation of the experimental results first reported her

Gravitational Chern-Simons Lagrangians and black hole entropy

    Get PDF
We analyze the problem of defining the black hole entropy when Chern-Simons terms are present in the action. Extending previous works, we define a general procedure, valid in any odd dimensions both for purely gravitational CS terms and for mixed gauge-gravitational ones. The final formula is very similar to Wald's original formula valid for covariant actions, with a significant modification. Notwithstanding an apparent violation of covariance we argue that the entropy formula is indeed covariant.Comment: 39 page

    Particle Kinematics in Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

We study the deformed kinematics of point particles in the Horava theory of gravity. This is achieved by considering particles as the optical limit of fields with a generalized Klein-Gordon action. We derive the deformed geodesic equation and study in detail the cases of flat and spherically symmetric (Schwarzschild-like) spacetimes. As the theory is not invariant under local Lorenz transformations, deviations from standard kinematics become evident even for flat manifolds, supporting superluminal as well as massive luminal particles. These deviations from standard behavior could be used for experimental tests of this modified theory of gravity.Comment: Added references, corrected a typing erro

Calibration method to improve transfer from simulation to quadruped robots

    Get PDF
Using passive compliance in robotic locomotion has been seen as a cheap and straightforward way of increasing the performance in energy consumption and robustness. However, the control for such systems remains quite challenging when using traditional robotic techniques. The progress in machine learning opens a horizon of new possibilities in this direction but the training methods are generally too long and laborious to be conducted on a real robot platform. On the other hand, learning a control policy in simulation also raises a lot of complication in the transfer. In this paper, we designed a cheap quadruped robot and detail a calibration method to optimize a simulation model in order to facilitate the transfer of parametric motor primitives. We present results validating the transfer of Central Pattern Generators (CPG) learned in simulation to the robot which already give positive insights on the validity of this method

On the General Kerr/CFT Correspondence in Arbitrary Dimensions

We study conformal symmetries on the horizon of a general stationary and axisymmetric black hole. We find that there exist physically reasonable boundary conditions that uniquely determine a set of symmetry generators, which form one copy of the Virasoro algebra. For extremal black holes, Cardy's formula reproduces exactly the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.Comment: 17 page
