Eta invariants with spectral boundary conditions
We study the asymptotics of the heat trace \Tr\{fPe^{-tP^2}\} where is
an operator of Dirac type, where is an auxiliary smooth smearing function
which is used to localize the problem, and where we impose spectral boundary
conditions. Using functorial techniques and special case calculations, the
boundary part of the leading coefficients in the asymptotic expansion is found.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX, extended Introductio
Driven Pair Contact Process with Diffusion
The pair contact process with diffusion (PCPD) has been recently investigated
extensively, but its critical behavior is not yet clearly established. By
introducing biased diffusion, we show that the external driving is relevant and
the driven PCPD exhibits a mean-field-type critical behavior even in one
dimension. In systems which can be described by a single-species bosonic field
theory, the Galilean invariance guarantees that the driving is irrelevant. The
well-established directed percolation (DP) and parity conserving (PC) classes
are such examples. This leads us to conclude that the PCPD universality class
should be distinct from the DP or PC class. Moreover, it implies that the PCPD
is generically a multi-species model and a field theory of two species is
suitable for proper description

High-Performance, Wearable Thermoelectric Generator Based on a Highly Aligned Carbon Nanotube Sheet
A high-performance, wearable thermoelectric generator (TEG) was fabricated with a highly aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) sheet. The aligned CNT sheet exhibits extraordinary electrical conductivity compared to disordered CNT sheets and also can be directly fabricated as a continuous TEG without metal electrode interconnects. This provides a significant reduction in contact resistance between TE legs and electrodes compared to traditional TEGs, resulting in higher power output. In addition, the continuity of the module without any disconnected parts provides high degrees of mechanical stability and durability. This robust and scalable approach to flexible TEG fabrication paves the way for CNT applications in lightweight, flexible, and wearable electronics
Interacting Monomer-Dimer Model with Infinitely Many Absorbing States
We study a modified version of the interacting monomer-dimer (IMD) model that
has infinitely many absorbing (IMA) states. Unlike all other previously studied
models with IMA states, the absorbing states can be divided into two equivalent
groups which are dynamically separated infinitely far apart. Monte Carlo
simulations show that this model belongs to the directed Ising universality
class like the ordinary IMD model with two equivalent absorbing states. This
model is the first model with IMA states which does not belong to the directed
percolation (DP) universality class. The DP universality class can be restored
in two ways, i.e., by connecting the two equivalent groups dynamically or by
introducing a symmetry-breaking field between the two groups.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Quantifying electronic correlation strength in a complex oxide: a combined DMFT and ARPES study of LaNiO
The electronic correlation strength is a basic quantity that characterizes
the physical properties of materials such as transition metal oxides.
Determining correlation strengths requires both precise definitions and a
careful comparison between experiment and theory. In this paper we define the
correlation strength via the magnitude of the electron self-energy near the
Fermi level. For the case of LaNiO, we obtain both the experimental and
theoretical mass enhancements by considering high resolution
angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and density
functional + dynamical mean field theory (DFT + DMFT) calculations. We use
valence-band photoemission data to constrain the free parameters in the theory,
and demonstrate a quantitative agreement between the experiment and theory when
both the realistic crystal structure and strong electronic correlations are
taken into account. These results provide a benchmark for the accuracy of the
DFT+DMFT theoretical approach, and can serve as a test case when considering
other complex materials. By establishing the level of accuracy of the theory,
this work also will enable better quantitative predictions when engineering new
emergent properties in nickelate heterostructures.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
